College and DL music.

My sister said a bunch of her friends at Umass got a big fine and in trouble for DL music on the schools server my question is would torrents fall under the same category or s that legit?

Or what could I use?

www.ruckus.com

The only downside is that the music is DRM protected, which means you need to find a converter to convert the songs to mp3 for iTunes

i hear torrents are not detectable or whatever like directly downloading from limewire or somethin like that. i'm no computer genius though so i dont have too much credibility here.

Yeah they are detectable...at least at Purdue Uni they are.

But ask some of the computer "geeks" around you for help. Often times your school will have a local network sharing program that you can get terabytes off of and not get into any trouble. This is because the schools only monitor outside traffic. I know my uni has one. :D

find out if your school has a DC++ hub. If they do, you can access it over just the local network, so it's super fast, outside sources can't track it, and it doesn't go towards your usage cap (most schools only let you d/l so many gigs per day/week/whatever).

also, you can download stuff legally for free on Ruckus, then use Tunebite to strip the DRM.

i heard that about umass too, i go here right now. i still have limewire on my comp i just dont share the files. stupid move but whatever, i dont download that much. but yeah torrents are detectable, and here its a $750 fine for every song downloaded.

my sisters school, university of rochester, knows when you are torrenting or limewiring and stuff. the tech guy told us
