College advice for non colorado resident?!

so its getting down to crunch time for applying to college, and im running out of ideas of how to escape from ohio and get to colorado. right now im looking at CU CSU and UD, but they are all so expensive. I have pretty good test scores and grades, so are there any private colleges that are pretty generous with scholarships that could make college out there more afforadble for me?
 
denver is one of the more expensive schools in the country, and the state college program (cu, csu, etc) has lobbied quite successfully over the last decade to make it as hard as possible for out-of-staters to gain residency and therefore access to in-state tuition.
unfortunately, they just love your money too much, and private schools are definitely not an alternative cause they love your money even more. i dont know how they are with scholarships but i will soon cause im applying to DU law...my hopes arent exactly up though
i dont really know about CMC or Mines or any of that stuff though, anybody else able to fill in there?
 
If you are going to college to get a good education and ski a lot, and need it to be cheap, pick University of Utah. It's much easier to get in-state tuition than colorado and only 30 minutes from the mountains... I love Colorado, I go to CSU, but it's pricey and a 2 hour drive to the mountains
 
Mesa State College.

It is in Grand Junction, on the Western slope of colorado (not the overcrowded gaper infested frontrange). It is, I beleive one of the most affordable 4 year schools in colorado. about 40 minutes to the closest hill (powderhorn $275 for a student season pass) about 2 hours to vail, 2 1/2 hours to breck/keystone/abay (you can pick up a colorado pass that is good at all those places + the beav for like 350-450 depending on age, 2 hours to aspen if you can afford it, 1 1/2 hours to sunlight.. Lots of dope hiking and outdore shit to do in Grand Junction..

There are so many possible answers to your question, but let me first digress.

If you want a quality education and you want to be close to the mountains, look at U of U and UNR. There are a few others as well, but I know these two and I would recommend both. They are also more affordable than any quality Colorado school.

Back to CO. I would have say, in terms of driving distance, DU (not UD) and Colorado School of Mines are the closest. Boulder is next and obviously has a far better "scene." It is also a far bigger school the than the two aforementioned. CSU is about 2 hours from any of the Summit County resorts. I go to DU and it's expensive, but it seems like the rest are as well. I know that mines is also very pricey like DU. Mines is also very hard to get into and it's primarily and engineering school that also has a strong economics program.

You can find some smaller shools that are closer to the resorts in CO, but you just have to think about what you want a degree in and how much "value" that degree will have after graduation. Hope that helps.
 
in state is possible, you just have to be on top of it and commit (i was able to get it)...also you might be able to get a scholarship to one of the public unis, look into it and apply for the scholarships when you apply for school, tho those depend on your grades and test scores...
 
hmm, my aunt uncle and cousins live in the springs, and they are also my godparents... my cousin also attends CU. what are the possiblities for me to get instate?
 
look into what's required of you to get instate, they keep changing it, but its is definitely possible to get instate without having family around. it takes a year to establish residency usually.
 
the only thing as far as residency is concerned i got from my grandma is a place of residence, which you could establish without family in the state.
 
It's 3 years that you have to live here to get residency. Colorado is strict. And you have to be either 23 or prove that you are completely emancipated from your parents.
 
I feel ya on the getting out of Ohio, because I was in your shoes a year ago. If you want to be close to skiing, check out Western State. Its a smaller school, but its pretty cheap as far as out of state goes, cheaper than private in Ohio. You won't have any classes with more than 40 kids (most are in the 20s) and its a free 30 min. bus ride to crested butte. The education isn't perfect or amazing, but its a legit school if you want to ski alot.
And I'm kind of hyped right now b/c i drove to Monarch pass today (1 hour) and shredded some early season pow.Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions
 
take the time to Check out DU, not really a good party scene but its a great school, but yeah its expensive.... but come visit, they give out quite a bit of money its worth a look.
 
DU is expensive but a really good school

Boulder is expensive as shit for a so so education

CSU is a pretty good school and is about half as much as boulder

There is also Colorado College which is in CO springs, its a good school like DU, but smaller, and thats all i really know about it

The problem w/ in-state tuition is what someone said before, you have to live there a few years AND be completely non-dependent from your parents, which means no free health care from mom and dad. Which is what everyone in school depends on. Or if your over 21 you can get it in less than a month, but again, you cant be claimed as a dependent by your parents.

All the other schools in CO are cheaper yes, but aren't going to give you as quality of an education. Since you mention that you have pretty good grades now, id try to go to a decent school.

Also dont shut out places like Utah and also Washington for your search. There are a few really good schools around the seattle area that are pretty close to the mountains. And at those mountains it dumps way harder than coloradians could ever dream of. Id post something in thier regionals too if your interested. Plus the Seattle area is way more badass than CO.
 
just to reiterate what I said. No doubt Co is sick and the skiing here is for sure really dope. Arguably the best parks in the country within 1.5 hours and some of the best BC around about 4 hours away in Silverton/teluride. but......
I can pretty much promise you that if you spend at weekend checking out U of U or UNR, you will never look at Co again.
 
a good friend of mine and former roomate went through 1 year (yes ONE year) of hell , according to him, to get in state at cu. he said it was def not easy, but he pulled it off.
 
colorado get too much hype, besides its parks....you have to remember they get the least amount of snow out of pretty much everyone in the rockies, and its dry snow....so it doesn't stick around or make as good of a base as CA, UT, MT, WA, OR. What im trying to say is that, i spent 300days over the last two years in CO skiing and i was seriously disappointed w/ the amount of pow/pow days. Meanwhile i hear stories about everyhwere else in the rockies getting hammered way harder on a consistent basis.

Keep you options open.
 
i go to CU and my best advice is move to colorado for a year and claim residnecy BEFORE you go to school. Its alot easier to become emancipated when you dont have a tuition bill of 15g's each semester. Its tough but it can be done. CU is definately the best choice of schools if you want a good education adn be aroudn a ton of kids that shred.
 
well i cant really afford to miss a year of school, heres my situation...

i have a 3.9 gpa and a 30 ACT plus a pretty loaded resume, and im plannig on majoring in chemistry or biochemistry, in hopes of getting into med school at University of Buffalo and becoming an orthopediac surgeon. I have shadowed the career a few times, and have been building my high school courses around this goal. Therefore a year off of college in a skitown will look like shit for getting into med school, and i dont want to go to a college that has a bad or no reputation. Im a dedicated student so i know i can balance skiing/partying/studying, but im just sick of midwest atmosphere all together. I want the open air, mountanious terrain, bright stars, and to be around more adventerous people.

As of right now im applying to University of Denver, CSU, U of U, Montana State, and OSU/miami U as back up plans in ohio.
 
you should be able to get scholarships...apply for them when you apply for school, they'll take a big chunk out of tuition
 
You should get into school out here no problem. I was in your shoes a year ago; 3.8 and 30 on ACT, eagle scout. Also doing pre-med with plans as an ER doctor. Good luck dude!
 
Honestly man, there is no reason to waste a ton of money on a freshman year unless you are prepping for an advanced technical degree. You could take basic classes that transfer at just about any school, while saving money, skiing, and establishing residency. Why pay $10,000 to take Health, Calculus II, and Economics 101? You can take those anywhere.

Obviously I don't know what you plan on taking so I am speaking generally.
 
I'm going to have to say U of U because their bio program is really good. Check out UNR, I don't know about undergrad bio rankings, but the med. school is really good.
 
Sorry, didn't see this earlier. If you are concerned about cost, get onto those scholarship websites and start applying for anything and everything in sight. $300 here, $150 there...adds up quick. One of my good friends from high school did scholarship applications religiously until she had enough to pay for everything at DU. That's a ton, and her numbers were similar to yours. I go to the AFA though, so I never had to worry about paying for stuff. That's another option, and a great deal if you get med school out of here, but obviously committing to more than school in that case.
 
I'm an out of state student at Mines and it is about 10,000 less a year than DU. I looked at both and DU was about 45,000 a year when I looked at it and Mines is about 30,000-35,000 a year out of state. If you want engineering and a small campus environment come to mines.
 
theres also UCD, or CU Denver, however you want to refer to it. or Regis for a private school.
 
I'm going to get shit for this but being a great party school and great skiing, shouldn't be the tops on your priority list for choosing a school. I chose mine because of skiing and really kind of regret it. Also you go to college to get a degree and higher education and partying and shit should come second
 
or your parents have to live here for a year and prove intent to stay here the rest of thier lives.

my threads so i can throw some input in later when I have time. I'll just say I've gone through hell to try to get in-state as well. but basically, I i was accepted w/ it and had it taken away so I have to take next semester off since I can't afford out of state.
 
I GOT A $36,000 SCHOLARSHIP TO CSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! opened the letter today, and started feeling queezy because i was so excited and shocked. ill be in fort collins next year babbbby
 
I hate you! God CUS is my number one school of schools that im interested in. FOCO is chill and pretty good vibe there as far as party's go. Any Know whats up with Fort Lewis im thinking about going there?
 
yea.. after we talked about the presidential scholarship, i started to convince myself for awhile that i still had a chance if i got it, but then i started gettin all pessimistic and basically gave up because i didnt think i would be qualified enough for it. its just the biggest weight off my shoulders now . thanks everyone for the advice/support!
