Clubs/Nights Out?

My mate is already in Whis and says most of the clubs are dead. I'm heading out on the 24th and so am wondering if he's just not going to the right places or if it'll be quiet for a while?
Also any recommendations on clubs etc that are good (cheap is also a bonus) and specific dates?
