Close calls

Did you almost crash someone? Did you almost die? This is place to tell your close calls.

First day of skiing. I was skiing backwards real fast while listening to my walkmen. I had so much speed, so much adrenaline and flashlight delirium's last seconds playing. Then this kids comes out of nowhere. Luckily i managed to only crash her tails. Both of us were ok, could've been bad.

Skiing on the glacier in deux alpes couple of weeks ago, coming off the landing of the last jump in the kicker line and the is a snowboarder at my 10 o'clock doing the same thing. This random girl boarder starts to cut across the flat ahead. I see it coming and im like shits gonna go down. They try to navigate around each other but fail and collide. By this point i had carved hard right and just missed getting caught up in a pile up. I think they werent too bad but it was a definite close call.

I had one gnarly fall over a few hundred feet of steep rocks a couple seasons ago. ended up just fine, but had i not stopped myself before the trees it could have been a whole other story.

in my eyes really gnarly falls that dont bang you up too bad are actually a good thing to keep your confidence in check.

Got caught in a big slide in Alrberg after dropping a wind lip. managed to get to the side of the slide, but ended up having to ski down past the cow track we were meant to be hiking back to resort on and walking along a frozen river bed to get back. sketchy day, but worth the fresh lines..

late summer at Hood a couple years ago I straight aired at an angle & wound up sending it to the side-tranny of a jump only to see a bunch of big snow-boulders instead of groom.... I landed and back-seated over them saying 'fuck, fuck, fuck' until I wound up back on the trail. It was especially sketchy b/c if I crashed I'd have wound up in a the rocks to the side.

During early season my mountain was making snow. My goggles were covered in it. Between that and the snow being made, visibility was about 10 ft at under the guns. I was skiing switch and accidentaly crashed into a snow gun. Not fun

this summer i was tramping and there was a kid sitting on the side of the tramp, and i misstimed a cork 7 and i nearly kicked him in the head.

and i nearly died overotating a backflip landing on my neck.

When i first started landing switch I couldn't control myself at all, veered off the landing in our tiny ass park. Also, jumping on my friend's tramp drunk at 2 am doing backflips.... went a little too far back and landed one foot on the tramp and the other went through the springs. Just scraped up my leg, but if I had landed anymore off I would've broken something for sure.

*veered off into the woods. Back tips caught and I double ejected into a log haha. Nothing bad, just a bruised ego.

haha, i wrecked the shit out of some old man this last year at Vail. mobbin' down one of the bowls and this old man changes his path and takes a 90 degree angle right at me. i caught him in my peripheral vision about 4 feet before impact. the collision didn't knock me down, but it spun me 180. i stopped, apologized, and made sure dude was ok. fortunately, he wasn't seriously injured...aside from his pride.

I skied off the main trail and skied this little trail and some kid was blocking the exit and ended up buttering over a pile of trees. Came out as if I planned it.

i was skiing pretty fast through about 10 inches of powder through the woods at angel fire and i hit a log under the snow, double ejected and tumbled about 20 feet. i wasn't hurt but i about had a heart attack when i hit it. also i've seen kids slide down the run above the park at taos( there's some pretty steep terrain directly above the park.) and take out people waiting to drop in the park.

Almost ate it doing 75+ when training for Super-G. No B-Netting, narrowish trail, and a huge left footer at the bottom. End of my Super-G experiences..

i was hauling ass out of this small chute and there was a cliff at the bottom i thought i could air easily, but not being familiar with the mountain it ended up having quite a few more boulders in the landing area. I launched off and immediately thought i was toast. I ended up splitting a few rocks with my tails just clipping some more rocks. Landed way front seat, did two tomahawks then rode away like a baws knowing i could've easily just ended up in the hospital.

first time skiing ever the ski place (now closed) gave me 175's (I was 8) and I proceeded to attempt to ski on them and subsequently crashed into a tree my first time downhill skiing ever. i didn't ski again until I was 10. the rope tow was also broken on the bunny hill so I had to walk up the hill with my 175's. it was traumatic and I'm surprised I even went back to skiing.

Years ago my friend went down bad and was in the landing so i stood on the lip so no one would hit the jump and land on him. As im standing on it a boarder is approaching the jump with intentions of hitting it so i throw up the X shape with my poles. Well that didnt phase him, he shouted as he got closer "YOU BETTER MOVE IM HITTING THE JUMP!" and im thinking to myself that there is no way he is going to go off the jump with me standing here. He got closer and closer and i figured he'll probably just slide out at the top of the jump. Nope. At the very last second i drop to the snow and the fucker nicks my helmet with his board, soars off the jump, and skids out on the landing nearly running my buddy over. He dipped out real quick. Everybody in the park was like "the fuck?" That was the last time I saw that boarder.

on a t bar in the alps and this women comes tearing across the t bar trail and gets clipped on the back of my ski, we both went down and ate shit

One time in stowe in I was going super fast in the woods with my friend and he took the path I was about to take and I crashed real hard in a tree

In skiing I overshot a 30 footer by another 30 feet and somehow rode out. Tramp wise I nearly cork 7'd into Bpaul while filming. Landed on my head but was alright I set really fucked up.

bombing an icy run switch when out of nowhere my ski ejects (or rips out, dunno which happened first) and without even expecting a crash i smack straight into the ice ....

or

on a misty day i misread the terrain and charged towards what i thought was a knuckle feature that i could air over but instead it went straight to vertical, like a quarter pipe, i aired like 5ft and dropped about 10, almost straight on my back, double eject, two broken poles, lost my goggles, basically a full yardsale ...

that day i'm sure my helmet and backprotector saved my life ....

and last year i did the meanest tomahawk down a pillowline and ended up headfirst in a powderhole right behind a pillow, only my boots were sticking out and for a moment i thought i was going to suffocate, easily the scariest thing i ever experienced, i can only imagine being buried in an avalanche kind of feels the same ...

almost died/permanently injured my self lots of times, usually involving trees and rocks because I am a park rat and when I venture in to big mountain territory I get a little rambunctious.

Every time on of these threads comes up I feel the need to post this picture...View attachment 240810

Under-rotated backflip. Concussion, seizure, broken nose, 3 stitches across the bridge of my nose, 3 stitches going inside my nostril, 20 stitches across my lip, bit a hole THREW my tongue, and ripped my bottom lip off my gums.

I thought he said "Did you almost die?". In which close, yes, I would consider it a close call to almost dying.

on the chairlift, banging skis together (i was using 10 din bindings) to get all the snow off the topsheet, and my ski falls off, edge nearly hits some kid in the head

Huge air to fakie on a hip. I was too concerned with banging out a stylish landing and couldn't manage to stop before crashing right between a tree and snow gun tower. A little to the left or right and it would have been a lot more painful.

About 2 months ago I came off a t-bar and began moving towards the top of the park about 20 meters away when I heard a scream from my left (uphill), some woman runs into me flat chat, total yardsale for her, her skis both pop off and shoot down the hill about 100 meters and stocks go flying.

I get up and compose myself, pop my skis off and check if shes OK (im fine, not a scratch on me), shes bleeding from the face and wasnt responding to me. I run up to the liftie (who was completely oblivious) and ask her to get patrol who take yonks to actually show up.

Close call, scratched topsheet for me but concussion and broken nose and shit for her... could have been a whooooole lot worse.

I was skiing the park at whistler and there was this dad leading his kids though the park being a complete idiot. First off the park isn't a place to take 4 year olds for a run down the hill. There are regular runs for a reason. The dad decided to stop and chill in the lading zone with 5 kids. I waited there for about a minute and thought it was clear. when I took off the landing I realized the landing was not clear and the dad was just standing there. No one had crashed they were all just resting in the landing zone.

I come out of my 360 and land swerve around one kid fall take out another one and the dad flips fucking out. I respond, " What in the fuck are you guys doing in the landing, smarten up this is how people get seriously hurt." The guy not checking on the kid thats hurt skis down to me and pushes me down on the ground and calls me a reckless dumb ass punk kid. He then releases out of his skis and throws his poles at me trying to start a fight.

The patrol comes down and saw the entire thing. The father got his pass pulled for being a dick to the patrol and for being a complete idiot. And the dad still thought I was in the wrong. The kid I crashed into ended up being perfectly fine. That was an interesting day for me on the hill, thats for sure.
