Climbing Mt. Everest

I've always played with the idea, but I would rather avoid the congestion and opt for something else, cho oyu for instance (granted 8000m peaks are treacherous as hell, even if everest is one of the "easy" ones, if such a thing can be said).

climbing everest is a scam. its awful and your basically paying people to haul your shit up the mountain and your just dropping your oxygen tanks on the way littering and if someone dies just leave them there no big deal..

grow some balls... climb K2

Setting your goals a little high. Try climbing some of the other mountains first. Even those are extremely difficult. Everest even if your good, it's iffy. Sometimes you get fucked over by storms and can't make it, the fact that you can't breath up there, and the abominable snowman from rudolf lives below the summit and frequently kills people that hike on his mountain

why spend three months of your life doing that... half of the time is hiking to the next base camp, then hiking back down for acclimatization. i hate how people think everest is such a big deal when there are plenty of harder peaks. go climb cho oyu...

i hope those of you thinking you are going to climb it are planning on getting a job baying way over 100 Gs a year. Shit is so expensive. It would be sick as fuck to be able to do it though. You got to be a dedicated mountain climber for that shit.

it's a great goal in life but there are some reasons why i wouldn't do it...
it's been done before
you don't need to be special/athletic/whatever... to do it.(i know some guys that can't run 3miles but have been on everest and they also don't climb harder than me. they just used oxigen and a shitload of sherpas and guides to get them on top...)
everest climbs are ffing expensive (not only gear but also transport, permits, insurances, food, sherpas (anyway you scale everest you will need help of the indigenous ppl, even if it's just for helping you get your gear to basecamp...)
Everest is imho more of a "look what i did" goal and it's way too commercial and overrated; theres much more badass stuff to do that gets less appreciation...
I know its a mindgame but whatever, i rather enjoy a hard regular climb than puffing my way up through the dead zone, hardly having enough oxygen to think, i'm not really into this SM shit you know ?

Yes - before I got into Skiing, i was a sponsored mountaineer and spent time in the Himalayas making first ascents (India / Pakistan...as well as other places....) ... BUT Everest IS a TOTAL GOON SHOW if you go anywhere near it via the South Col route (I.e. the Gaper Route....) .

I'd only go to Everest if i could climb it from the Tibet side, via the North Ridge, not Clown-Ville at the South Col.... that sh*t is enough to keep me away forever simply because your risk of dieing due to simply the numbers of people on the route is pretty high...

Plus the North Ridge is Cheaper, South Col is a $60k vacation.... dragged up everest a bunch of hard ass sherpa's.

Everest is still the top of the world. even if other peaks are harder to reach. everest is still the top of the world. you cannot get to the top of the world without being on top of everest. Its that simple. If you're looking for a more difficult climb then find one. If you're looking to stand on the very top of the world its Everest

k2 is the same way you dumb fuck.

there are sherpas, you def need oxygen, and theres double the chance of dying on K2.

i guess it costs 65 grand to climg everest... i'd rather climb a bunch of other mountains. but nevertheless, it would still be dope to do

you can't just climb everest. you need to work your way up. I've climbed up mount washington in january with crampons, ice picks etc... and that was fucking hard. It was - 10 degrees during the night and you're uncomfortable the whole time, not to mention it was snowing like a bitch.

Everest is something that people do to test themselves.

Skydiving is close enough. And I can jump about 2200 times including reserve repacks for $60,000. Everest was something I thought would be cool until this show made me realize it's a $60,000 theme park for 200 rich people a day.

that sounds like an awesome goal to achieve sometime later in your life. i think that you should start on some different mountains first, such as K2

Kids on here have a lot to learn about mountaineering, and alpine climbing.

You don't just start on a mountain such as K2. You need to work your way up to bagging peaks like that. There are many skills that you need to learn in mountaineering that could save your life.

Your best bet is to find a guide service that specializes in alpine climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. They will help you learn the skills necessary to make you a capable climber. Then you need to continue to practice and hone these techniques.

Even better is to take the necessary coures to become a certified guide: http://amga.com/index.php

A good place to start once you have the skills is usually on the higher peaks in your area. Mt. Washington is a great one, but also look at the 14ers, and work your way up.

Alot of people climb everest just to say theyve done it, sure you know its not as hard as others, but the cute blonde over there eyeing you up doesnt

Climb Katchunjunga. Its right next to everest, its really big, and its not as mainstream.
Plus like a million people have climbed everest whats the point?

do K2!

I remember when I used to jog up everest, wing suit it to the peak of K2 and straightline down with my spatulas on sheer ice days as my morning workout. Damn knees these days.

the point is that the years of training, money, and effort have paid off to climb to the top of the world.

thats the point. its about pushing your self.

people who know nothing about mountaineering should not post.

Damn man maybe mountaineering is about exploration and the unknown for some people. Plus I'm probably one of the only people in this thread that has actually seen Everest.

I have a long way to go before i could climb an 8000 m peak. one of my major concerns is how commercial it is because i enjoy climbing for the solidarity and uniqueness that comes with each summit and getting to the top of everest is all about the paper. but no matter how you look at it, the mountain is the tallest on earth(and growing!)

everest, nah. though i would like to trek to base camp. something a little more manageable, though, like aconcagua, would be pretty rad

wow nobody has a clue what they are talking about in this thread... half of the people dont even know what country everest is in

dude i just finished that book (its sooo good) a couple days ago and even though the whole book is basically about how everest has turned in to a clown show it still made me really want to climb it
