i have just been watching a lot of ski movies lately and i've noticed that a lot of times when ppl don't land cliff drops they land on there sides. why? i've done a few cliff drops, not big ones, but you do you end up turning onto your side??

If anyone read jeff holdens article in 'backpacker' magazine a couple years ago he explained it. He said that there's an 80ft rule or something, anything bigger then 80 feet, if you try to land on your feet you'll probably blow your knees or break something. Taking it on your side distributes the impact so you get to live. Lots of skiers seem to live by a 60ft rule though.

i wish i had cliffS!!!!!!!

and a mountain over 800ft.

i predict in year 2010 there will be no snowboarders and all freeskiers ,why?

because skiing kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It all depends on how you leave the ground. If you leave slighty off axis or leaning just a little you get 10 times the reaction in the air because there is no resistance. But like Jibs said it breaks the fall alot better. I do it alot because I cant really afford to get hurt.

The bigger you go the more essential it is that you do not land on your feet. The trick is finding out how big you can go while sticking your landing

dude, people land on there sides when they freak out, i consider it a weakness sort of, not to bag on the dudes who do it but it takes away the 'radical factor' for me, holden doesn't do it, he does a four point landing: feet, knees, butt,back/shoulders, it works way good too

holden does it when he jumps bigger then 80. He said so himself.

paul ahern when he did the world record jump of 224 feet or so landed on his back and even though he was wearing body armor (bulletproof vest i think) he broke his sternum. if you go that big you're probably fucked no matter what.

I honestly don't think a bullet proof vest would do anything for you in that situation. Unless of course you were being shot at and the only escape was a 224 foot cliff.

ahem... (push up glasses in nerdy fasion) well, you see...the velocity acceleration achieved while dropping a cliff is 9.81m/s squared...which means, on an 80 foot cliff you will accelerate to aproxamitely 25 m/s...which is about 90 km/h or 55 miles/hour for those americans out there....the chances of dropping 80 feet and hitting the snow at 90k's an hour and skiing out fine are pretty slim, so the best option is to use a larger surface area to slow down the object in motion (push glasses up again) this is best achieved by landing on your side, firstly it reduces the impact experienced by your knees (namely your acl which is prone to spontaneous eruption) by spreading out the impact on your whole body, more area, less impact...secondly, it momentarily stops all forward movement letting you shake off the minor concussion you're experiencing enough to ski out looking cool...and as for the guys who fall back...they tried to land on their feet, and just couldnt hold it due to the exploding acl, or maybe they were too far back when they hit
