Clearing some things up: the term "gaper"

alright so ive heard many different words refering to someone who sucks at skiing/is a beginner...but in the Midwest we dont really use the term gaper. so:

how do you pronounce this word?

is it: gaper, is in the store The Gap, or a goggle gap

or is it: gaper, as in gayper, or to gape (to watch)

clear this up NS, its a matter of national security
 
it comes from the GAP between the bottom of their hats and the top of their goggles making it gaper as in the store gap
 
i think it comes from the people from nebraska who take ski trips to CO, pull over on the side of the highway, and just gape at 'dem big mouwwwnt'ns!
 
Gaper (GAYper)

1: Noun: A tourist who can't ski and or looks like a fool with tight clothing that is oddly colored.

2: Noun: A skier in the park and or groomers that is snow plowing off jumps of rails or ruin money corduroy.
 
well there are a few things that are style crimes, jeans while skiing, goggle gap, sunglasses, pants tucked into boots, gloves tied outside the jacket, tight clothing any of these are style crimes and you should be shot for them

these also make you a GAYper
 
gaper (GAYper) is not to be confused with the gaper gap, which is the gap between goggles and helmet, which gapers have. which is why it is called a gaper (GAYper) gap. just remember that they're all gay, and that will help with pronunciation
 
yea. didn't you guys learn in elementary school that if you have an "e" after the "p" it makes a long "a" sound?
 
yep, def 'gay-per', gaper gap being the description for the above described costume malfunction.

and for the guy above, they are not jeans, its called texas gortex.
 
Um the midwest follows every trend the west and east coast has so, um, I don't know if you've been under a rock for the past 2-4 years but its used everywhere. Even the Gapers use Gaper. And I come from a redneck town where everybody is involved with FFA and at there are at least 5 converstations about making a lawn mower go 30 MPH.
 
A Gayper is everything that has been metioned on this subject. Also look for carhartt pants, zipped open jacket and some times no goggles. Ex.
 
thw word gaper (gayper) does not come from the gap between goggles and hat. it comes from the word gape(-to stare with open mouth, as in wonder- OR -a stare, as in astonishment or with the mouth wide open-). The word gaper originated because people who sucked at skiing would stand around and gape at others who were very good. therefore someone who sucks is a gaper(gayper). it now has developed into a word signifying those who suck at skiing and with that comes a wardrobe including tight one pieces, bright colors, tucked in jeans, AND a gap between the hat and goggles. the last one being the reason that someone thought it was pronounced gappper (like the gap store). therefore the gap between hat and goggles is a subordinate characteristic within the superordinate category of "gayper".
 
its people who does crazy huuge gaps!!! like candide thovex is a gaper! when tanner cased on chads gap he was a wanna be gaper..
