How did we get to the point where using words to describe awesome things contradict eachother?

It started with the word sick, then it moved to more words like ill. Now we hear gross, dirty, and nasty used to describe awesome things. How did this all start?
 
i use words like that all the time. they actually make sense though, like let's say you're describing an awesome play that went down during last night's game, you'll be like dog, he fuckin dangled the whole team then he sniped cheese, it was fuckin disgusting. in this case, the play is so good that when you see it happening, you can't help but think jesus christ i cant even look at this, way too disgusting
