Cleaning outerwear: I SHAT ALL OVER EVERYTHING

Ok so if you want to remove rust and other rail burns from clothing how do you go about that without harming the outerwear?

wash it in the washing machine then water proof it after its dry.

^That will destroy the waterproofing and re-waterproofing is always worse that what it had to begin with. Handwash the spots with a stain remover and then let it air dry.

You buy Nikwax non detergent cleaner, then follow it up with the Nikwax DWR to maintain/restore water proofing. I did it and it worked wonders.

Ohhh, but it prolly won't take rail burns and terrible paint marks out. Rail burns are exactly that... burnt into the fabric. And the paint is just terrible.

nikwax solves all your washing needs, but you cant really get rail paint or poop off your stuff. just get new gear and be fresh like baby puke!

Im thinking about buying some pants that have a rail mark on them, its not severe tho. If it was really marked in there, I think it would be impossible, but if not passable. If its already been wash attempted then perhaps not. My friend said he had poop stains in his coat and got it off with a cleaner and scrubbin, liek the suggestion.

Did you try reading the label?

Just cool wash with a little powdered detergent, no softener. Washing reactivates the waterproof coating - it only destroys it after maybe 5 washes. Reproofing won't hurt but isn't necessary unless you've washed it lots.

Look.... no matter what you do I would go back and wash it with Nikwax outerwear wash, then follow that up with the Nikwax DWR stuff. It's important to wash your shit with that stuff anyway. The outerlayer of outerwear is like a bajillion tiny umbrellas. Oils, paint and general dirt fuck up those lil upbrellas and make them inverted, so rather than the water beading off, it just absorbs. And regular detergents destroy those things too. If you can find a non-detergent wash you can use that.

grillman knows best, use nikwax. if it doesn't comin out washin it with nikwax it probably wont come out at all. and fuck powder detergent. One time I used that shit and a little glob of it never got rinsed off and it bleached a little spot in my shirt. grrrr
