FORT WORTH, Texas - Cindy Sheehan, the soldier's mother who galvanized an anti-war movement with her monthlong protest outside

President Bush's ranch, said Tuesday she's done being the public face of the movement.

"I've been wondering why I'm killing myself and wondering why the Democrats caved in to

George Bush," Sheehan told The Associated Press while driving from her property in Crawford to the airport, where she planned to return to her native California.

"I'm going home for awhile to try and be normal," she said.

In what she described as a "resignation letter," Sheehan wrote in her online diary on the "Daily Kos" blog: "Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.

"It's up to you now."

Sheehan began a grass roots peace movement in August 2005 when she set up camp outside the Bush ranch for 26 days, asking to talk with the President about the death of her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan. Casey Sheehan was 24 when he was killed in an ambush in Baghdad.

Cindy Sheehan started her protest small, but it quickly drew national attention. Over the following two years, she drew huge crowds as she spoke at protest events, but she also drew a great deal of criticism.

"I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement," Sheehan wrote in the diary.

On Memorial Day, she came to some "heartbreaking conclusions," she wrote.

When she had first taken on Bush, Sheehan was a darling of the liberal left. "However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used," she wrote.

"I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of 'right or left', but 'right and wrong,'" the diary says.

Sheehan criticized "blind party loyalty" as a danger, no matter which side it involved, and said the current two-party system is "corrupt" and "rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland."

Sheehan said she had sacrificed a 29-year marriage and endured threats to put all her energy into stopping the war. What she found, she wrote, was a movement "that often puts personal egos above peace and human life."

But she said the most devastating conclusion she had reached "was that Casey did indeed die for nothing ... killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think".

"Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives," she wrote. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most."

"I am going to take whatever I have left and go home," Sheehan wrote.

"Camp Casey has served its purpose. It's for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas?"

she was a pawn but def not clueless, and now i respect her even more for waking up and realize there are neocons in the democratic party too and seeing past all of this patriotic bullshit

I didn't really agree with anything she did, but this is painfully true:

"Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives"

How can you believe that crap. Casey Sheehan gave up his own life so that we can live peacefully here at home in America. To say that her son died for nothing is a disgrace to him and has dishonored the sacrifice that he has done for all of us.

The quote is completely true, you can't help but agree, honestly, think about this country today, that's it right there!

that is bullshit. if anything the military has put us in more danger by creating more terrorists(by killing hundreds of thousands of innocent woman n children)

Shes a moron. I feel bad for her son, he died protecting us and all shes doing is go against what he was fighting for.....

ummmmmmmm no. Please find me some credible proof that american soldiers have killed "hundreds of thousaunds of innocent women and children". It's just not true.

The lowest, most conservative estimate is 15,000. More "liberal" estimates are above 100,000 civilians dead.

I don't want to sound like a dick but I thought I was pretty clear that I wanted a credible source, not your word (unless you have been on the streets of Iraq over the last few years). The truth is that the American military does more to protect against civilian casualties and collateral damage than any other military in the world. Do you see insurgents in Iraq publically apologize for killing civilians like we do? I think not.

you are a joke. a fucking weak minded joke. 2500 iraqis died from may 1st through the 22nd. thats not including all the peope who die from diesease everyday that was caused by us bombing the fucking shit out of there country. if you think the mainstream media or the pentagon is credible you are not smart. the same people who LIED to get us into iraq are not going to tell you close to a million iraqis have died as a result of us sending our army there

that number may not be 100% correct. thats just how many they found inbetween those days. im sure alot more died

cindy sheehan is a bitch (nuff said) and the inflated-as-fuck 650,000 iraqi deaths estimate was based on a survey of approx. 1000 families, or something on those lines. The super left wing is rediculous.

Thats because they are fucking nuts and blow up cars 10 times a day and take innocent others with them. They need help, we are there and we need to help them fix this shit, otherwise its gonna be over here.... Wars=Death, innocent people are going to die, its just part of war.... Be thankful and support the troops!

I am a joke because I disagree with you? How old are you? I thought we graduated from name calling in first grade.

At least we agree on something, we can't trust the mainstream media. However, I don't want a news report. Just find me a single enlisted man or woman that will even admit to not caring about civilian casualties and I will agree that you are right.

Anyway, I'm done with this argument. I will be contempt with an "I told you so" when a liberal is elected into the white house and another terrorst attack takes place inside of our country.

no not because you disagree with me, and if you give me 10 minutes i will show you a video of american troops killing innocent civillians and laughing. i just need to find it. im not a liberal. i dont want any dem to win. i would much rather have ron paul then and fucking liberal asshole.

I know what your talking about, but that is such a small percentage of them, the rest have a heart and soul.

You idiot, read this. When you have a country as big as the USA, its pretty hard to keep terrorists out so its bound to happen no matter who the fuck is in office. Someone will kill some people for political reasons, dont matter who the fuck is president, he/she cant stop it so your argument is wrong and also read this...... it has like 2500+ diggs on digg.com and its been all over the news.

THERE HAS BEEN WARFARE IN THAT REGION FOR THE LAST 500 YEARS OVER RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY THINK ABOUT LIFE DIFFERENTLY THAN THE USA DOES.
