i think religion is around because it is a useful tool to keep order and morals in check. i'm completely athiest however, but i consider my self an extremely moral person, even more than some of my devout christian friends. furthermor i believe christianity especially to be the hieght of arrogance egotism, and i can't spell because i'm only using one hand to type.

What does christianity mean to me? Well, it's comforting, not so much a sense of belonging because I really don't share it with many other people. I have very few christian friends and I have no time for church because I really don't like most of the people that I have met through the church. For me, I have been through and seen things in my life where I really, fully cannot say that God hasn't had a part in them. Well yeah, a lot of things in my growing up that I just can't (and I've tried to) say that God isn't in there.

And God doesn't fix hunger and disease and stuff coz the world is fucked up,it always has been and it always will be, that's humans fault, not his.

hunger and disease humans fault? So your basically saying if I gave a child a handugn and told him to go play he goes off and shoots someone it's not my fault? Its fully the childs fault? get real if god created this world and us he is responsible for what we do and what we have done. If god is this all powerful being than he could have easily created a world in which there was no need for disease or hunger. A world that is infinitly large so overpopulation will never be a problem. We would all use photosynthesis as a means of energy production and there would be no need for greed or hunger there would be no shortage on time or on life itself.

^The Problem of Evil, crudely expressed. You should read some Hume, it'll develop that idea further. It's almost insurmountable, but there is a way you can argue against it: There must be evil in the world, because the best kind of goods are those that triumph over adversity.

By the way, nobody argue that you need evil for good to have any meaning (relativism)... it sounds like an intelligent argument but it's completely illogical. Just forget that one.

I think that religion in general is something to make people better people. I dont think it matters what religion you are, just that you try to do the right thing. Going to church, in my opinion, is a waste of my time. I have heard all the readings they are ever going to say, and i dont need a priest to tell me what its about. Im a catholic because i believe almost everything the catholic church believes in, except i just hate going to church.

My teddy will always listen. He's good enough for me. I don't need a god. And what slickjamesjik said is SO true. I know pleanty of people who are all about being true Christians or whatever and they cheat on girl/boyfriends and sleep around and all of that good stuff more than most atheists I know. Oh well. I'm not going to try to argue this. I just don't want anyone to tell me I'm wrong or stupid or to try and force their beliefs on me. One of my good friends used to tell me and a few other people everyday that we were going to burn in Hell.

too many people equate going to a church with christianity. Can you actually say you are a christian if you go to church for 45mins to 2 hours a week and sleep? If you are seriously beleiving that by entering a specific building and passing out, that this will allow you into heaven, or whatever your personal beleifs are, then I would have to disagree completely. You want a perfect (after)/life without giving anything of yourself. I guess this is where people need to grow up, and stop weening off their parents.

Many of you are blaming things on God, but I don't think the Devil has even been mentioned in this thread. How can we blame God for everything that goes wrong in our lives, yet when something goes well, it is our doing, our planning, our skills.

And for they guy bitching about how bad the world is, about poverty, and disparity. What are you doing on a ski website? If this all bothers you so very much, sell your comp, your skis, and go build houses for the homeless, don't buy your gear fom companies that use slave labour. Give most of your clothes away, you probably don't wear them anyways. Volunteer!!! Maybe I'm completely off base here, but I don't think so

Don't expect God to fix everything when we don't do a thing ourselves.

buddy, hate to break it to you, but death is inevitable. i was upstairs just chillin this summer, when my mom and sister started screaming from the basement. i ran down, and my dad was dead from a heart attack...i tried to give him cpr, but it didnt work.

you want to know where god was at that moment? welcoming my dad into heaven, so he wouldnt be living in constant pain with diabetes here on earth. i have faith that my dad is in good hands now, and its only a matter of time before i will join him in heaven.

of course i will never heal emotionally from seeing my dad's lifeless body on the floor, but i am assured that i am in god's hands all the time, and he will be there to comfort me.

and if you wanted to, you could feel the same way as me, rather than being bitter about that moment for the rest of your life.

in my opinion people believe in religion because it's comforting. when someone close to you dies, you want to believe that youll see them again in some magical place. But how can you really believe that. And how can god let some people into heaven and make some burn in hell? if only the people that love praise him and believe in him go to heaven, then maybe he just created people to praise him, and that is pretty selfish

^The thing about that is, because God is the highest being, what would he do? Lower himself, and not have his creations worship him? He loves to be worshipped, and he loves the people no matter what. This might make him sound 'egotistical', but honestly, who would you worship if you were the highest being? Think about that.

He doesn't like it when people go to hell or don't choose to believe in him, it makes him sad. But because he gave people a choice whether to love him or not, it happens.

we are the only creature made in god's image...we are the only ones with a conscience, and capabilities to go to heaven and hell.

and yeah, God gave us dominion over animals, so we can do what we want with them. doesnt mean we have to kill them all, but we are allowed to eat them, use them etc.

Go Freezy and Atlanta Ski! God rocks my face off! He is the best and he can provide so much love for you in your life. But you may be thinking now...'then why does all this bad stuff happen to me..?' Well it's because if God made the perfect life for you, then there would be no worries and you would have to believe in him. But God loves you so much that he decided to let some troubles in your life and let you make your own decisions. Think about it...he sent his one and only Son down to be nailed with nails that were like 7 inches long to a cross AFTER being whipped in the back 39 times so that his spine was showing b/c of being whipped so badly. GOD LOVES YOU! DEAL W/ IT!

that's a really dumb question, seeing how animals still eat humans (bears, lions, etc), and vice versa. If you're going towards the cave man approach, what was any different? They ate animals to keep themselves alive. I mean, sure, we don't see many cows or chickens eating people because of their nature, but what would be any different even if they did? What exactly is your point in asking that question?

I might as well throw in my two fucking cents about religion.

I believe. Why? I believe in out of fear. For my entire life, I've been brought up to believe in Jesus and the holy spirit etc... so if I don't believe I'm gonna burn hell. Who wants that? So out of fear of going to hell and burning eternally, I might as well pray, follow ten rules that were apparently written in stone but now on paper back published by Scholastic and go to heaven.

It's so hypocritcal. They say love all and be accepting of others then they go off on tangents about how other religions are bad. Read the 'CULT ALERTS' section. Hillarity will be insued. Also check out the hillarious 4kids department about hindus and Kangajew. If anyone is of this religion or whatever, you should stop skiing and using the internet because it'd be secular.

Then there's the insanely odd Scientology religion. It's super funny walkin by the big Scientology building in Hollywood. They have all these brain washed kids trying to get you to believe in whatever the fuck they believe in. It's pretty much a scam created by Ron Hubbard. You have to buy books to become 'clear' and keep buying more until your a jedi knight in a nutshell. Kinda like college but you don't get a degree. But folk like Tom Cruise and John Travolta believe in this propaganda.

It's easy for me to believe that all this religion mumbo jumbo was conjured up by the brilliance of some dude way back when and used scare tactics to force people mentally to believe in him. But aside from the Bible the only real solid evidence that Christ might have existed is the Shroud of Turin which is even more skeptical proof. Also, I'm sure there's more evidential proof but I wouldn't know... Over thousands and thousands of years... shit can get really fucked up. And now that I think of it we're all pretty fucked up for whatever reasons.

what is god? God is no person, no creature and no tangible being. God is the by-product of the search by human beings for morality. He is there for any man with a conscience but what he is, what is truly righteous, in unclear. Sometimes no one knows what is right or wrong. Is lying wrong? Sometimes lying can help defend or save innocent people. Likewise, the concept of God is unclear, and each religion has a different concept of what is right. No one knows what is right because right is different for each person. God is simply a search for a moral compass. The diversity of the word 'right' is reflected in the massive amalgam of various religious groups-- Muslims, christians, roman catholics, w/e. Each have different interpretation of moral righteousness, each have different god.

...so everyone fights over what's right and, the point is religion inevitably leads to war, although its direct intentions are for peace.
