Church and state

While this looks like a very stimulating thread with great debate going in both directions, I'm afraid I can't get involved. I almost started into the e-mail when I noticed the thread creators member icon and completely lost any and all credibility in her posts. Perhaps you should head back into the kitchen with that icon and mentality, you can leave these dealings to the men who once shaped and still run this country.

pwn'd

seriously, what were you thinking... taxing indian reservations? "hey fellow politicians, let's steal the money from the race of people that we're responsible for nearly wiping out in the first place by stealing thier land! hopefully it will solve this whole debt problem we've dug ourselves into with our war mongering."

Ohh and taxing churches (non profit organizations) is better? NO, taxing churches will do nothing, and its not only the war that is the reason we are in debt it is also spending money on aiding 3rd world countries, scientific development etc. Besides 9.3 trillion dollars is an insurmountable amount of money which we will most likely never be able to pay off, so unless you have any ideas on how to get us out of that debt you can stop talking also.

You got pwn'd yourself

Either way taxing another group to help cut the debt, wont work. The only that will truly help cut the debt is the way Congress spends the money.

I'm really feeling what PA ^^ has to say about the subject..

Anyways, I think everybody should have a personal religion and believe what is right for them, and keep that personal. Organized religion is basically like "take a look at all these stories, and choose the one you like, then base your life on that" no, fuck that, i think its stupid... not to mention religion has been the main cause of war over the history of mankind.

That is exactly right the way they spend the money. Once the war is over the spending will go way down and a large amount of the debt will go away but other things will have to change before the debt is gone. I agree with you taxing will get our country nowhere, and that is why this current election will be so important towards the future of the country.

i don't want to start a new debate here and jack the thread.... but where did i insinuate that taxing churches or any other non-profit organization is a better idea? i don't believe in federal taxing in the first place. it's unconstitutional and ineffective. we spend way way way more money on the war than helping out any country in any circumstance and we shouldn't even be in this war in the first place. it's not even about the money to me anyways, it's about the lives lost over the money. but i agree with you on your last post ^.

i dont see a problem. its WASHINGTON's monument. he was a christian, and the monument is dedicated to him, so why not put christian prayers on it? its like if some important american buddhist guy died and we decided to make a monument for him. we'd probably put buddhist prayers on it

i respect peoples beliefs, i dont think the same way, but i respect them unless they try to push their beliefs onto me. Thousands, well hundreds of thousands of people have died because of religion, there is a civil war going on right now in iraq because we put 3 different types of religions together. Look at Palestine and Israel, they are fighting over the land because of religious beliefs, don't tell me there isnt anyhting bad going on right now tied to religion. I could go on with examples of people dying over religion, but i think those two are enough.

If you think that the root cause of violence in Iraq is religion, you're an idiot. The root cause of any war is power. Religion just decides the teams.

i never said it was the root cause, but if you think about it, religion wants all the power and wants to control everyone, and there are different religions wanting the same thing so obviously they are gonna go to war over it. if that made any sense..

first that has nothing to do with anthing this thread was made for. and do you have any idea how much more money we've given to these countries we are "in debt" to. how much they are in debt to us for our efforts and spending in world wars, aid, everything?

I think we went over this in a pre law class that I took. I pretty much had no idea what was going on so this might be totally wrong. Anyways along with separation of church and state, everybody has the freedom to religion. If the state did not allow the religious writings, they would fulfill the separation of church and state clause but infringe the freedom of religion clause. So even though the did slightly mix church and state they did not infringe religion. Its a double edge sword and because the writings did not force views on anyone they were allowed. I might have just made that up but whatever.

so last year in my Geo class a kid sneezes and the teacher says Gob bless you if you believe in that. Now that is a prime exanple of separation of church and state, even though some people view it in a bad way.

oh shit. We had a lecture on kitsch and phallic buildings.

I present to you the florida state capitol:

first, thanks for reading. yeah, i understand religion may be forced on people in tougher ways than architecture. I just wanted to point out that stupid statement regarding the design on DC.
