Chuck Palahniuk's New Novel: Pygmy

As some of you may know, I was able to get my hands on a prereleased copy of Pygmy, Palahniuks new novel that comes out May 15. The book is decent. Its about an operative from North Korea, who comes over on a program and stays with a white family. The kid is probably like 16 or so, and they never really say what country he is from, but its probably N Korea.

The operative narrates the whole book like its his journal, so the whole novel is from his point of view, and therefore written with a short, choppy, grammatically uncorrect syntax. Amazingly, the kid has the english vocabulary of an english major, but can not differentiate between 'he says' and he said'.

Palahniuk obviously wrote this book incredibily quickly. Unlike the profound amount of background research evident in his previous novels, it seems as if he did barely any background research for this novel. I can't help but feel like Palahniuk doesn't know much and didn't bother to learn much about North Korea (or whatever asian communist country this operative is from) and how an immigrant would misuse the english language.

But what the book lacks in realness, it makes up for in all other aspects. The ideas and images provoked, the sharp, laugh out loud critiscism of Western culture and religion, and the shock value of certain scenes are spot on.

If you've never read Palahniuk, I would suggest you do so immediately. Pick up a copy of Fight Club, Haunted, or Rant, then go read Pygmy.

If you've read a bunch of Palahniuk books before, Pygmy will not be the one that tops your favorite, but its 100% worth the read.

I have read Fight Club, Survivor and Choke.

Choke is my favorite because of its insightful approach to so-called vagrant life and sex maniacs. I hope this Pygmy gets into stores in Finland.

I've only read Choke and I didn't really like it all that much. Maybe I'll give this another shot before I stop reading him altogether.

But really, Choke was funny for a while then just started getting repetitive. I don't know what it was, I couldn't put the book down for the first 150 pages, the second 150 I had to force myself to get through.

I've only read Invisible Monsters. While I really liked the book, it didn't interest me in reading anything else he has written for some reason. But I have also been on a classic kick lately, too.

Good to see a Palahniuk thread, Stranger Than Fiction is a good read if you're into short stories. I also watched the movie version of Choke recently, but wasn't very impressed. It didn't convert to a movie all that well due to the lack of normality in Palahniuk books.. but still worth a watch

i have read fight club, but for some reason have read nothing else of his except guts. my friend is reading invisible monsters currently, and apparently its straight fucked up, but an interesting read. a transvestite and a girl with half a face? fuck.

yeah that's the first one of his books i read. i stole it from my brother when i was 13 years old. hahaha i was sooo disgusted by some of the stuff in there. i haven't read him since.
but if you say pygmy is good i might give him another shot.

It definitely wasn't a matter of being disgusted--I mean, one of my favorite books is "Last Exit to Brooklyn" by Hubert Selby Jr. I guess maybe it was because while the book had a great storyline, there wasn't much else to it. I'll probably read more of his work in the future, but for now I am elsewhere.
