I face-palmed so hard.

As long as there is stupidity in this world, there will be Religion.

i assume a special person to them? possibly a boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, maybe a really close friend?

i really cant say anything anymore against religious people because there are aspects of religions that are not bad and most people know that the bible is just a book and stuff. and certain aspects cannot be proven (although modern physics would make it seem highly unlikely that an almighty/alknowledgeable being is IN our universe).

but if someone "loves" (what does that even mean in that context?) a 2000 yr old carpenter more than his partner, thats just horseshit. when you take that fucking book as gods word and literally letter for letter, youre a complete tool.

i read that damn thing more than most people and while (especially the OT) is full of nice stories of wizards, wars and whores, its just a goddamn book. get over it.

Who are you to tell someone what they can or can not believe in?

As long as there is PallWall in the world, there will be stupidity.

This, I like to look at religion as guide-lines on how to be a decent person. Don't kill anyone, be nice to people. Simple.

Seriously. He was a middle-eastern dude who spoke Hebrew, and now a bunch of fat white people who hate foreigners and Jews worship him

hes not saying that, he's ridiculing someones belief because he thinks its stupid. That is completely valid to do. Christians do it in the worst way possible, their belief by its very nature says anyone who doesn't believe in their fairy tale is going to be eternally tortured in hell.

I always forget that people actually believe that stuff and then something like this reminds me and I'm like... ah man.

best part is that this punishment thingy nowadays known as "hell" in its current form is more an invention of medieval popes and stuff and has literally no footing in the new testament.

it seems like you are the one taking it literally....maybe people love the CONCEPT of jesus and what he REPRESENTS which would imply INTERPRETATION and a SYMBOLIC understanding of the bible. Its belittling to say she loves a 2000 year old carpenter more than her partner.

damn words really are powerful and can take on so many meanings its crazy

because i do not read between the lines. i take the book for what it is. seriously, you could make a religion out of every book that came out the last 10 years (including cooking guides) if you "interpret" just hard enough. what is the symbolic interpretation of the sentence "why have thou forsaken me?", what is the symbolic interpretation of the destructive god in the old testament? interpretation is bullshit, because its subjective and anything could mean anything when you just want to.

FACT is, that she stated that she loves jesus, a person living 2000 years ago that wanted to reform judaism and was killed in one of the more unimportant provinces of the roman empire. he never wrote anything down and all the scriptures were (at best) taken down 70 years afterwards. furthermore, his followers were legit marketing experts for their time and adapted certain aspects to make the religion more attractive, despite having nothing to with what are claimed to be jesus' words.

so if there is a clear cut "concept of jesus" to love in fucking 2012 , go fucking on. live your life, but dont tell me that this isnt stupid.

if my girlfriend would say that, i would straight up tell her that thats it.

my main point is that "love" has nothing to do with religion. what does it mean that god "loves" me? or that i should "love" jesus? i seriously dont know. how does god "love" all those children in africa that die the worst of all deaths? all the victims of all the wars?

i mean, respect gods moral code if you really need that to be a good person. respect the fact that he created the universe if you really need to believe that. i have nothing against that. but to "love" him? you cannot possibly be serious.

i get where you are coming from, were not really too far from the same page.

" interpretation is bullshit, because its subjective and anything could mean anything when you just want to."

exactly. if it works for you, then why the fuck not. The beauty of pragmatism (which is not thousands of years old and was a leading philosophical standpoint in the 20th century and even today)

I guess what i dont understand is why it bothers you so much. more pragmatism; if it bothers you, delete her from your newsfeed. she wasnt really trying to push any ideas down anyones throat. she was probably raised as a child to love god ABOVE ALL OTHER THINGS for if not she will burn in t3h firez of hellz. not really her fault

plus she a girl. interpret that for what you will.

I'm not here to start a debate, but why does everyone think that religion is only for "stupid people?" While I don't profess any faith, many of my mentors are deeply devout, and they are some of the most open-minded and intelligent people I know.

Statistically, religious people are less intelligent. That doesn't mean that everyone who follows a religion is less intelligent and it doesn't mean that religion is the cause of intellectual deficiencies. So while it is wrong to say that religious people are stupid, it's correct to say that religious people are more likely to be stupid than atheists. But again, it is only a correlation and says nothing about the causes.

i have friends that are very religious. i dont argue with them even though i think religion is the biggest crock of shit to hit this earth since crocks of shit have been invented. There's no point in being a dickwad about it, there are many more things one can relate on other than religion.

while i agree, for the most part, with the rest of your post, this paragraph shows that you dont fully understand the bible. the first coming of jesus, some 2000 years ago, was to wash away the sins of the people so they could live in peace. unfortunately, the people rejected jesus as their king and killed him, so the sins were not forgiven, and peace did not prevail. now the idea is that we are waiting for the second coming of jesus and if we dont reject him this time we will be free of sin and there will be no more suffering. until then we are in a sort of punishment state thats been going on since adam and eve supposedly defied god and banged it out under a tree.

i think moar people need to understand the distinction between being religious/ spiritual, and organized religion. if you just accept what is fed to you, yea i would call you tupid. but if you have explored the spectrum and settled on religion/ christianity thats a bit different

and something that really bothers me is that i cannot come with a logical reason why someone has faith in god. i was a very content protestant for most of my life who believed in god in one form or another. but after doing a lot of critical thinking and studying a lot of logic, ive realized that the only reason i believed in god before was because i had been told to. i know thats nothing new to you guys, but at the time it was to me. now i still respect most religions and the people who participate in them, but i find it shocking that so many people are incapable of thinking for themselves. religion is, in nasty terms, brainwashing. you tell someone a thing so many times that they eventually believe it, no matter how preposterous it may be. any one who has taken even low level philosophy classes knows that it is critical to question everything (why is that so critical?), and a very simple application of self interrogation would quickly reveal that there is no substantial evidence of god, and therefore its not worth putting your faith into.

then if i apply that same principle to astronomy, i would have to say that there is no such thing as extraterrestrials, because there is no evidence. however, i have faith that somewhere in our unthinkably large universe there is life besides on earth. i have no idea where or in what form, but i believe the odds are in favor of their existence, although i do not think aliens will look like wookies and klingons, like they are portrayed in science fiction. similarly, i have faith that a higher power exists, although it will be very little like the Judea-christian god. given the fickleness of what we call "reality" and the lack of a full explanation of the universes origins, i think it is logical to believe that there is something greater than humans. i dont necessarily believe that said high being (s) will ever make contact with humans, or will provide a Utopian afterlife, but it is likely, given all the infinite possibilities, that there is something larger.

The day someone who has never been introduced to Christianity through the communication of another human being becomes a Christian, I'll believe this. No one meditates, and without prior knowledge, comes up with the Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Islamic, etc. doctrine. It's always based on what someone else has told them. We are all born atheists.

i will not try to be disrespectful but you have to admit that a catholic, a protestant and a member of another confession would have very different feelings about what you just wrote. so its not that black and white as you think, even among christians there are huge differences in these matters.

i was raised hardcore catholic in europe and the second coming of jesus was never anything more than a metaphor for heaven. i have yet to meet someone (no matter how religious) that waits for his second coming. so i guess its not a catholic thingy.

furthermore, in the scriptures, he said that most of his followers will see the day of his second coming. sort of a failure on that one.

for example, paul added something to the christian faith that is still prevalent in (catholic) christians: the fact that jesus died for our sins, making it completely unnecessary for jesus to come once more.

i dont really know what my point is here, but maybe what i wanted to say is that, although i have distanced myself (i am 23) over the last years from the catholic church, i was born and raised in a very catholic area and was very interested in all that stuff when i was younger and so all my opinions only count for the central european catholic tradition as i would like to call it, because i am sure that cultural differences and other confessions interpret a lot of parts differenty or put their emphasis on other things. that doesnt make me right or you wrong, i just think that i know more about the bible than you think and that i would like to think that i understand the catholic tradition and interpretation of it very well.
