from being around christians for most of my life i got the distinct impression that i would be burning for eternity if didint believe in there god. whats the difference between the two?

oh yea, one threatens violence in THIS life, and the othet promises eternal suffering in the NEXT life, so why is the muslim threat taken so much more seriously? 9/11? terror attacks? i dont think so, the message is the same as christianity, maybe not even as bad but hell is alot different then life, what i gather from that is that most people dont actually believe in heaven or hell, if the message "burn in hell for eternity if you dont believe in jesus" isnt as bothersome as "behead those who insult islam" then im lost

 
i strongly suggest you do some reading man. sure each religion has its extremes. but there are both muslims and christians who dont tell the kids what your saying they do. personally i feel that organized religion is what causes most problems today. but great things have also come from organized religion, so i guess its a toss up...
 
Well muslim extremists actually killing people as of now is more of a threat to people living than a preacher guy preaching fire and brimstone to people. Most muslims are not extremists and most christians don't constantly preach fire adn brimstone. Your athiest? why are you worried about hell. I would be way more worried about extremists bombing my house if I were you.

also my arugement was that what christians say is no better then what islamofascists say, and if you look at the big picture, even with terrorisim they are still equally bad.

IMO, organized religion is bullshit. i think its ok to believe in a higher power but everybody takes it way too far.
 
actually, i good friend of mine has a muslim girldfriend, and i am surrounded by christians. so yes i do know both types of families, an niether preach suicide bombimg or how jesus is our savior. they keep it to themselves...
 
yes but christanity tells that if u dont accept jesus as ur savior ten u are going to hell and muslim says if u dont kill infadels. so they are to totally different religions 
 
I am a christian and even though islams koran does in fact say it is ok to kill infadels most muslims do not kill infadels. Christianity and and islam are similar religions in that they worship the same Creator but they do have some distinct differences when you look further into the details.
 
Its not as if all muslims hate "The American way of life" or "The freedoms we enjoy" thats just a message among the dominant discourse thats used as rationale for our agressive foreign policy.

Instead of jumping to actions and conclusions you could view the whole issue from an academic standpoint and ask 'why' are things the way they are?

Many argue that the muslims are blind to reason and hate the west with an unreasonable ignorant passion. In truth its most of us who are ignorant. For the most part we have absolutly no idea what goes on over there. We're safe and sound in our own little sheltered cocoon and because of that for the most part we couldnt care about the issues of he world.

The Muslims are pissed at us because for 50 years they've been subject to our foreign policy. We're a young upstart world power who suddenly thinks we can impose the reletively new idea of liberalism and democracy on a culture that has flourished for 2,500 years longer than us.

Think about it, for 50 years we've:

1) Created and supported the state of Israel displacing 750,000 Palestinians.

2) Stood behind Israel in every conflict they've gotten involved in, both legal and illegal.

3) Put leaders in place that they cant stand. (Shah of Iran- repressive, pro western)

(Saddam Hussein- Sunni in a mostly Shiite nation)

4) Stationed troops in nations often against their will. (Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iraq)

They hate us because for half a century America has treated the region like a puppet, sucking it dry of its resources and hampering their liberal right to self-detirmination.

Terrorists are only a threat to the United States because for so long we've treated them like shit. Tell someone that we had it coming? You become a pariah. Its rediculous.
 
i thought islam teaches non-violence and peace. certain parts of the koran or distorted and twisted and thats where you get your extremists. the same thing goes with christianity. there are extremists in every religion and its those people that give them a bad name. i am a christian but i'm not standing on some street corner screaming the end is near and you're all going to hell. those people piss me off.
 
i think its really sad how the media portrays islam, its pretty much the same monotheistic religion as christianity, it has all the same bloody rules, yet we treat it so differently.

id like to add that all the very religious muslims i know are very kind hearted people.

i think religion is great as long scriptures arent taken out of context... the problem with most fundamentalists in any religion is that they completely miss the core values of their own religion, and play on peoples feelings to further a personal point of view.

gay rights is an example, many fundamentalists will disregard the basics of religion because they personally feel uncomfortable about homosexuality.

Some of you have obviously never taken the time to even read any little part of the qu'ran, and are spitting out shit that is spoon fed to you by the American media (which is very biased and twists everything in the book to sound evil). as the person I quoted earlier said Christianity and Islam are more or less the same religions. It saddens me to see how ignorant kids are getting.

u really are talking about extreemest in both religons. in cristianity/cotholosism every soul will come before god on their judegement day, whether they believed in god or not and they have to explain their wrong doings. and well not believing in god is a wrond doing in cristianity. NOT TO MENTION IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IN GOD WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO SPEND ETERNITY IN HIS PRESENCE??? because that is what heavan is, or maybe you didnt know that.
 
dude, you still don't get the basic idea that so many have tried to point out to you in this thread: just because a few assholes happen to distort part of a religion to suit their own hateful purposes doesn't mean the entire religion is with them. As so many people have already tried to tell you, the majority of islams do not beleive in actively killing people who are not members of their faith, and the majority of christians do not beleieve that you are automatically going to hell if you are not a christian. of course, the sad thing is that you'll probably just dismiss my arguement by saying that your opinion is unassailable. also, the reason why many people may believe islam is worse is that the extremists among them are trying to actively kill members of our society, while christians are only threatening damnation. there you go, i hope that this post makes you think a little bit more than you did before you created this idiotic thread, which really only reveals your unreasonable hatred of organized religion.

The purpose of religion is not to preach hate. Im going to speculate that you would only beleive that because the only side of Islam you're exposed to is the radical side that makes the news. This radical side is the face of extremist Islam, very in your face and open to demonization. The truth however is that 95% of Muslims would'nt have anything to do with this and wish as much as the rest of the world to live peaceful.

Now im not trying to rationalize beheadings or other such public slaughters, but they occur because they see no other way to get their point across. Their point is that for too long westerners have treated these countries as proving grounds for their foriegn policy. They want us out, its clear and theyre tired of the influence we have over their self detirmination. Its the same reason why we have an insurgency and not a democratic government in Iraq, they want to be able to detirmine their own way.

As far as Islamofascism goes, is it any wonder that that belief is even in the cards? look at the way Islam is portrayed in the media, always as a threat, always soemthing to be wary of. Was Hitler/ Goebbel's propaganda much different in its early days?

Muslim, Christian, Jewish or Palestinian, people are people but for whatever reason, even the highest ups in the Western governments holding the reigns of power cant seem to figure this out.

lets say no christians say that, ok. all practicing christians are totally rational. the message is still in the bible. it still clearly shows outlines the punisment god will hand down. and honestly, if im supposed to believe the whole fucking fairy tale, i think its a tad bit worse then being beheaded.

christianity says clearly you will burn in hell forever if you dont believe in jesus.

islam clearly says what should happen to infidels. infidels are not innocent.
