Completely untrue. Evolution is widely accepted throughout the scientific community as how we came to be. Has it been proven? Just one out of many examples. Science is virtually on the same plane as religion when it comes to topics such as these, validity wise. One side is just far more logical than the other, and has at least SOME evidence.

inb4 the bible is evidence

The first place to learn about science is a chem/bi/phys textbook, not an academics rantings, they are as factual as fiction is real.

The evidence is insurmountable. if science is a "story" then so is childbirth, and going to the store, they aren't meant to entertain, they just "are" and we describe and observe them.

And I don't think science should be compared to god/religion/etc. Science can't even be used prove the lack of a god because science never assumes, unless you are all talking about the social sciences.

i don't know anybody that hopes there is not an afterlife.

personally, i wish there was, or that i could convince myself that it would be possible. i lost my dad a year and a half ago and i would want nothing more to see him again. literally i would give up everything i have if that could be a reality but there is no evidence what so ever or scientific backing that says anything that religious people believe in is real.

i would rather face reality and the harsh truth, than believe in something that i equate with a fairy tale. i am mentally strong enough to handle the truth, i don't need to "believe" in any supernatural forces to make myself ok with things. It is what is is, no amount of sugarcoating is going to change things

thats true.

and the funny thing is, even if god exists he pretty much HAS to respect our decisions and know that they are the result of the free willy he gave us. so he cant really be mad at us for jumping over a causeway from time to time.

yeah, seriously, for me, this faith thing is not applicable. like the incas prayed to the sungod and hoped that the sun will rise tomorrow too. well, actually, the sun will rise no matter what you do. a lot of "religious explanations" can be explained by science. so, if some other stuff is left that science cant explain yet, logic tells me that we will eventually be able to explain that stuff.

i dont like faith in an omnipotent and all-knowing and all-caring god, because that is going against logic.

There's no such thing as postmodernist "theory". Postmodernism is illogical, nonsensical pseudo-philosophical assertions. "Everything is subjective," says the postmodernist. "Is that a subjective opinion as well?" asks the rationalist. A slight breeze clears away the puff of smoke from whence the postmodernist's head once was.

its a definition thingy, that a theory is never verifiable. i think karl popper is the father of "theory theory" and he basically said that you can never prove a theory, only find more and more evidence suggesting its validity while in the end, some other theory will destroy it completely.

i agree that its more or less a play with words without REAL implications, but thats maybe what he meant.

I meant evolution, not evolutionary theory. Evolution is a fact. Two parents have a child, that child is born with different combinations of genes and thousands of mutations. That is evolution. The theory of evolution describes how -and the mechanisms by which- it operates. That we will never know 100% The "evolution is just a theory, it can't be proven" opinion has been popularized by creationists and it has no scientific validity whatsoever.

can't tell if trolling or stupid.

evolution is proven as fuck. the reason we can classify the animals is because of evolution. they aren't classified by features, so much as genetic similarity. which is only possible because of evolution.

the only people who don't believe in evolution are wilfully ignorant.

Seriously? Evolution is a theory, one that is very well supported by facts. It's regarded as the most likely theory of our origins because there is no other sound idea competing with it. Science deals with facts, not truths. Don't get me wrong, im all for evolution, but it's straight up dumb to say it's 100% proven.

................................

in science, a theory is not a guess. that's a hypothesis. a theory is something that has been thoroughly investigated, to the point where it is acceptable to call it fact.

theory of gravity.

theory of relativity.

theory of evolution.

and if arguing terminology (which is easily google-able and you will see in 10 seconds you are wrong without a doubt on this one) is all you have to go on, yer screwed.

but still its no fact.

gravity is a good example. classical mechanics said its a force that has by accident the nice property of changing quadratically with the distance. relativity has a little different understanding of gravity, whereas quantum mechanics lacks a comprehensible inclusion of gravity into its concepts.

of course, for real life situations, gravity is a fact. but to say we know 100% how it works is bullshit.

for real life situations, evolution (from a biological standpoint) is fact. but to say we know how selection works and why which species survive 100% is a little off.

i am not a creationist. to be honest, its the dumbest shit i have heard. but science is not so much about "facts" as we think. the more you learn about the world, the more questions arise. but to me, that is more incentive to work on this stuff (and getting as much 99% solutions as possible) and not a reason to go praying to an imaginary entity.

...I'll say it again. It is only widely accepted as fact because the theory has vast evidence backing it, whereas other theories such as creationism does not. It's still a fucking theory. No matter what you say, science can never achieve absolute certainty. This argument is pointless anyway - we're rooting for the same team, along with most of the educated world. I back evolution 100%, because it makes the most sense. That is the premise on what this theory was built on. Valid evidence from tests etc can only make it more realistic than the others.

I already explained this. You all are arguing over a definition propagated by creationists. Here it is again: "I meant evolution, not evolutionary theory. Evolution is a fact. Two parents have a child, that child is born with different combinations of genes and thousands of mutations. That is evolution. The theory of evolution describes how -and the mechanisms by which- it operates. That we will never know 100% The "evolution is just a theory, it can't be proven" opinion has been popularized by creationists and it has no scientific validity whatsoever." Evolution is a fact. Evolutionary theory describes the FACT of evolution. We know 100% that evolution is a fact. There is no scientific debate about that FACT.

Christianity along with most organized religion all derives from the same shit... paganism or zodiac and sun worshipers. I believe in a Creator but I don't attempt to push or assemble my beliefs on others. My relationship with God or whatever or whomever you shall call him is personal because that seems the most logical way to go about this belief. Religion is only around to oppress nations and the world could really do without it. I believe in creation but not the way religion does. I believe in the "big bang" too but something must have caused that too. I like the to take this fetus picture as a really funny joke, I also like the stickman picture. LMFAO

that's true man, i've steeled myself up for that possibility, but really though i hope i'll see my mom again one day, i wouldn't classify myself as a christian, but i hope and i think, that there is something more to this. i've had too many weird coincidences happen during the time surrounding my moms death. i guess i would be called an agnostic theist. i'll find out when i die i guess. i know we spoke about this already. things going better for you though? it's been almost 5 years for me now.

From a technical stand point, all you argument is is an appeal to ignorance.

i.e. Since you can't prove it doesn't exist, it exists, and vice versa.

There is no valid premise within the argument, thus undermining your ignorant statement.

Final score, Christians 0 - Atheists 0.

I'm studying science at university and even I disagree.

Science is not a method that can be applied to everything...

i just have no patience for religion.

it boggles my mind how people can believe in it.

i mean, imagine if no one was religious today and i made the following proposition: hey yea, there is this thing called a god that created the whole universe, you cant see him, prove that hes real, but he is everywhere at all times and listens to us when we ask him for stuff. yea he was sending messages with wars and does answer any thing we ask for but i do it anyways. yea i know it totally makes sense right? best part is people cant prove im wrong so when they argue this ensues

i cant even comprhend how with the vast amount of knowledge today people still believe in religious fonybalogny

lol @ people who live their lives based on a book written on fucking animal skins 2-5000 years ago in languages humans can barely decipher today. not to mention the new testament was written 70 years after your boy jesus was around. does anybody elses bullshit detector go off here?
