In the latest freeskier o'connell says: "You may be the same guy driving a VW or a Ferrari 430 but people (especially chicks) are going to think you are a hell of a lot cooler if you are rolling the Modena".

He is a good ski photographer, no one can take that from him, but the above evaluation gives credibility to comments i have heard from people who have met him that he can be arrogant and aggressive. The picture that goes with the article o'connel poses dressed up as Jesus, I suppose it is supposed to be artistic. No, not in my opinion, just boring, been done a billion times before and done much better as well, not in drawback style he uses. So not very creative either.

We really need the pros to shoot with new emerging photographers who are creative and nicer, so that the business becomes more enjoyable for everyone. If the pros shoot with new guys and they are good then they will be published because the mags need the pics of the pros.

Am i alone in thinking this? (by the way i am not a photographer, but I work freelance for a ski mag).
 
i think as long as he still keeps taking sick pictures its fine. and the pic of him was just like showing off all of his photo equipment and stuff, i don't think he meant for it to be like really good or anything. i've never met him so i can't comment on his personality or w/e.
 
O Connell is an amazing photographer but I agree with you when you say we need a little more variety. If you look in ski mags there are usually about 4 main photographers in it... but when see snowboard mags there are rarely repeating photgraphers.
 
I agree that he is in my opinion the best hands down ski pphotogrpher in the industry, but that shot of him dressed up as jesus was hilarious...get a sense of humor he is just tryin to have some fun
 
he must make lots of $$$ with all the pics he has published in magazines, he has like 5 per magazine, often more
 
dude he isnt being serious. I am pretty sure he realizes how arrogant he sounds and does it as a joke. Plus everything about that statement is true...its just not said very often
 
i dont see whats wrong with his personality as long as he takes sick pics, but hell yeah, we need a little more different photographers in ski mags!
 
like he says,"it's a god damn camera, anyone can take pictures". who cares what the photographer is like, his job is to just take pictures.
 
The first thing I heard out of his mouth was:

"Have you seen any bears out here yet? I really want to see a bear!"

Then we saw a bear, and he was really stoked.

he uses his status to monopolize photoshoots, and in that way eliminates up-and-coming photographers chances to show what they're good at.

By doing so, he earns his money, ok, in that way it's just a busines, but it's not really in the "spirit" of freeskiing! It's not really helping the industry, and it's progression!

If his main interest is the $, he should get into the porn industry, or FIS-racing or whatever. He's involved in Armada Skis, and should by that, just as the rest of us, be concerned by the development and progression of freeskiing and freestyle! He's now holding it back!

I'm pretty confident when I say that Chris O'Connell is not involved in the new school skiing industry for the money... don't jump to conclusions. If he really was interested in making coin, skiing would not be the outlet one would expect him to choose...
 
Depending on the situation and location, it can be really bad form to just "drop in" on somebody else's shot that they have planned out and snap pictures of it yourself.
 
and fireunderwater is correct in her statement...and that dude talking about him monopolizing shoots is incorrect.
 
um, we certainly need o'connel. whayt we dont need is any more fucking stills from MSP movies... oh, wait, someone pretending to hitch getting doused by a passing car... never seen that..
 
A good frined of mine met him today in washington and said he was incredibly nice and they talked for about 10 minutes.. i think he was beeing sarcastic about the cars and some people have logs in the assholes and cant take a joke.
 
ill never forget the conversation i had with him at the xgames. i was like man i look up to u. and he was like what my photos or my wild partying and my ability to score with hot sweedish blondes. i looked at him and was like both i guess
 
i haven't met the fag, but i don't doubt that he is indeed, a fag.. i'm so sick of seeing his face.. as sick as it made me to see him talking at the end of war, i actually puked when i saw the new issue of ski time... it could have been a dope shot of bibby in the pipe, but instead we all have to look at mr. o'connell's disgusting face. i don't care how cool he thinks he is, it doesn't make up for his disgusting appearance. anyone can take pictures, if they have a camera.
 
umm isnt the article youre referring to the same one where he says the only reason he has all his gear is so he can show up to x games with 10 grand around his neck? maybe not but the point is, he's clearly joking 99% of the time he talks
 
i like mattias fredrickson (sp?) the guy who normally took photos of jon and henrik, but maybe its because i like jon and henrik

OC is one of the main guys that runs this site... You guys need to learn to apreaciate that. Plus, he has gotten into the position he is in currently because he is a rediculously amazing photographer; which is all that really matters.

I met him once briefly and he seemed geniunly nice.

and anyway who gives a shit if he is a dick, as long as he is still producing good photos he deserves to get credit for them.
 
i think the athletes he works with geniunely like him and that comes out in his photography. unless you have been around him alot and know how he interacts with the athletes then you can't be passing judgement here. 99.8% of us cant judge him on anything but his final products, his photography, and his final product is almost always sick as fuuuck.
 
he seems like he is good at his job but tries not to take life too seriously maybe someone of you people bitching about him learn from him. and that reply is awesome
 
i think he is an outstanding phtographer and he seems like a really funny guy. i have never met him but maybe some day...*sighhhh*
