Chile Earthquake May Have Shortened Days on Earth

I think people are missing lots of this. The reason why it sped up the Earths rotation and slowed the day is because the Earthquake was along a subduction zone so more mass was suddenly pulled in towards the centre of the Earth, I never read the article but I'm sure they used the example of a figure skater pulling themselves in and spinning faster. So they speculate the day was shortened by 1.some milliseconds (they can actually only accurately measure the Earths day to 20 milliseconds, below that is all hypothesizing)

But, as there are earthquakes which can slow down the Earths movement (the Java earthquake a few years ago slowed it by 7 milliseconds or something) there are also Earth processes which are speeding it up (such as volcanic activity and converging plates pushing mass outwards) so really this changes are counteracting one another and the days are staying relatively the same year per year. (within milliseconds).

i can't believe i'm wasting my 9999th post on you, but...

The quake, the seventh

strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and

should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds,

according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion

Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

now i'm going to say goodbye to NS for a while. peace out.

And you're reading it on YAHOO....

"The Feb. 27 magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile may have shortened the length of each Earth day.

JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation

should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27 quake. Using a complex

model, he and fellow scientists came up with a preliminary calculation

that the quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by

about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).

Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's

axis. Gross calculates the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis

(the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds

(about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same

as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33

feet).

By comparison, Gross said the same model estimated the 2004

magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the length of

day by 6.8 microseconds and shifted Earth's axis by 2.32

milliarcseconds (about 7 centimeters, or 2.76 inches).

Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than

the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the

figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004

Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010

Chilean earthquake was located in Earth's mid-latitudes, which makes it

more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis. Second, the fault

responsible for the 2010 Chiliean earthquake dips into Earth at a

slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004

Sumatran earthquake. This makes the Chile fault more effective in

moving Earth's mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting

Earth's figure axis.

Gross said the Chile predictions will likely change as data on the quake are further refined."

And as I said before, I pointed this out earlier in the thread.

Credits starts

i think it's safe to say more people in the thread paid attention to the OP than your posts, to say people can't read just because they didn't read what you had to say is fucking stupid.

hahaha everytime i jump i change the rotation of the earth by lik 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001

millionth of a second. right??

MOTHERFUCKINGBULLSHITSTUPIDPERSON YOU ARE.

The earthquake may not be in the news anymore but you know what, shit is still going on. You have no idea what it is to lose everything, EVERYTHING in one second, to see your city and house devastated and people dying, chaos, shootings, fires, pain, suffering.

I wasnt in Chile to see this and I hate myself for it. For not being there with my family. Today i spoke to them for the first time and you have no idea what it is to hear their voices after thinking they were dead, or who knows. My house was devastated. We lost everything. At least the walls are still standing, we were lucky. Others had to see their houses sail away. They have no food, electricity nor water for a week now. They have been isolated completely, with all roads collapsed. I dont think I quite understand yet the magnitude of this. All that i was expecting to see when i go back will be gone. Life as I knew it no longer exists.

I go back to chile in a couple days and Im gonna get to my city even if I have to walk there. Im gonna dedicate all my energy and resources to help rebuild my town and help the most damaged.

Look at my town: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nkesmeping/4397175390/in/set-72157623405761673/

Really...this is just too much for me. First haiti which is my natal country and now this...

Also, TODAY IS THE OFFICIAL CHILEAN TELETHON! RAISING FUNDS FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE EARTHWAKE/TSUNAMI PLEASE DONATE HERE: https://www.bancochile.cl/webchile1/Teleton/index_tarjetas_ex.html

We fuck the earth and it fucks us back harder. I just want to say, never take anything for granted...

relax, i think krob was at least a little sarcastic about the life-changing impact of 1.29 ms.

we know that things are crazy right now, but to think that humans are causing earthquakes is going to far.

I know I know, I was a bit too furious when I read that.

Also, I didn't mean humans were actually causing earthquakes. I meant it more in a karmic way.

i know and it would somehow be nice to have such a world that actually punishes for mistakes, but all this "increase" in natural catastrophies is to me just caused by the improvement of communication systems.

imagine 100 years ago. an earthquake strikes chile, would anyone have taken notice?

just as much as u r gay

...actually, im not so mad anymore. Im bACK IN cHILE and will try to head to my city tonight.

Here are some pictures a friend took...
