story

ya you can count on the russian army to shell their villages for like 3 months after this

the third reich couldent move russia back a few feet, the chechens could shoot 700 people in the moscow streets and russia wont move 1 centimeter away from chechnya

damn commies! but seriously that sucks. where will they show ski movie premiers now?

Ewwww!!! you got me flowers. flowers are just plants sex organs. why do people think it's sexy to castrate plants, and give them to people?

Yeah, I heard about this this morning. Apparently they were keeping 600 people hostage and warning the army not to storm the building or they would blow everyone up. Scary!

..:Make the world your priority..:

Russia isn't communist anymore, they are somewhat of a wierd ass backwards democracy.

The rebels are, well, er.. screwed if Russia ever came down in full force on them. But the fact is, Russia is strapped for cash right now, frankly, they dont have the money to fight a war, even against a minority group.

I was reading an article in a magazine ( i forget what magazine, so if anyone remembers, please feel free to post it) about how the Russian troops in Chechnya are stuck eating stale black bread which they soak in Vodka so its able to be eaten without breaking their teeth. Also, I'm sure they aren't alloted much ammunition or weaponry.

I believe, however, that Russia still has massive stockpiles of Diesel fuel, ammo, equipment, and mechanized forces around Russia from when the Eastern Bloc was still getting ready for the 'inevitable' war against NATO. In Tom Clancy's book 'The Bear and the Dragon', he describes a hypothetical war between Russia and China, in which they make use of these stockpiles. (And anyone that reads Tom Clancy will know that he knows his shit.)

So basically, if Russia ever decided to organize, they could most likely crush Chechnya in a couple days. I'm thinking, however, that mabye they are trying to act like a Democracy (Republic, whatever) in trying to win the popular support of the people in Chechnya... which I don't think will happen anytime soon.

i'm just happy to see people standing up against oppressive governments. i could say more, but i choose not to.

i dont believe that the russians are treating them right, but i dont think the chechens (sp?) are helping thier cause or whatever by holding a bunch of civilians hostage

Andy is right, the political scene in Russia used to be communist but it has since changed to be some 'weird ass backwards democracy.'

Russia a number of years ago were fairly within their rights to be at war. The environment has changed politcally and socially so that the reasons for war have also changed. Public support is dropping. On CNN this morning they said that this war cannot go on forever. It is costing men and money and resources that Russia simply cannot afford to keep pumping into a war that really isn't going anywhere.

As the dude above me said, there is a lot of resoucres in Russia, including oil fields that are still un-tapped. They just need the capital to get in there and do stuff with it. Russia turely could have been as great, if not greater than the USA and Europe. I belive it still could be.

I don't know about this 'Russia not budging an inch'... the rebels kicked major Russian ass back in 1995 when they got autonomy for a while... now the whole 'terrorist' situation is going on, and an oppressed culture can't fight for its freedom without being labeled terrorists. The Chechens are doing what they feel they have to do... its what theyve been doing for years, really.

yeti- as bad as vodka prices goin up would be, i think the death of 700 russian civilians is kind abad too. Thats just my opinion though, and as for russias political situation, they are still in socialist withdrawl if you ask me. the country as a whole still ahs remnants of a socialist dictatorship (stalin) and havn't fully industrialized to meet up w/ usa and england and such, poor bastards

they let all of the foreigners out of the theatre. plus others have escaped. and yeah I know they arn't communist anymore. they are threatening to blow up the building if russian troops don't leave chechnya (sp) in the next seven days. I'm not seeing a quick and easy way out of this one.

Kami you are close in saying that groupd of opressed people won't be able to fight for independance without being labled terrorists. That is because the way war is battled out is shifting again. I can promise you that when gurilla warfare came out everyone detested it and now it is common practice. It was around for over 50 years, in common practice, before we used it in our USA revolution.

Terrorism is a part of our world and has been for hundreds of years, if not labeled this way. Scaring people is one of the best ways to gain leverage for your cause. Any american can turn on the TV and watch the political ad campains right now, half of them are trying to scare you into thinkng the other canidate is a bad man so you should vote for them. Or the people who bomb their gov't and hold the leaders hostage and demand better living conditions. Are they really terrorists or just revolutionaries, or is it one and the same? Were the founding fathers Terrorists of there day? I duno, I think it is mostly just media hype and I am starting to see right through it.

prins that was a really good point about the founding fathers. I cant believe this isnt on the news all they talk about is the sniper getting caught.

Rastafarians believed Ronald Reagan was the Anti-Christ

That's because 10 American's died. That's way more important than 700 Russian lives...

this is a prime example of why communism will never work with the people on earth today. the USSR had more potential than any country has in a long time. it was wasted by lazy people and power hungry assholes who think solidarity is a four letter word

All i have to tell you is that not one of the chechnyans in that building will survive, and the russions are gonna fuck some shit up, which they have been doing since 1994.

yes, that doesnt seem to be the question as much as how many people in the building will live. there was/is supposedly a proposal to the chechnyans that if they let all of the people go, their lives will be spared. it smells like shit to me though

'He got fired? What did he do?'

'He jumped off of the roof again'

this is really a shame.. nobody knows about it! it's fuckin sickening how 'we' as northamericans are being forced to be oblivious to everything else in the world. If people don't care that's ok but if they don't have a chance to care then we're just letting things happen without notice. Since everything in the future will be equated back to sept. 11, this will result in 1/4 of the lives lost and it's preventable yet it doesn't make the front page of newspapers. I forget if I'm ranting about our ability to actually change and prevent terriorism or our way of life that promotes mourning about and then fixing problems over preventing them. we're all gonna die... end of story :)

I think the media is trying to down play 'terrorist' activities. try to keep them out of the spotlight. Just like they did with the school shootings that happened after columbine. even though I would rather know what was happening with the hostage situation than the lives of the two snipers. why do we even need to know what their lives were like. I don't like the way the media shows things. and american news is just sensationalism. every question/thing they say is designed to produce a specific pre-planned reaction. It pissed me off last time I watched it.

The Russians gassed the entire building, then invaded, supposedly killing all of the about 50 militants. Over 60 of the hostages were killed by the gas or by stray Russian bullets; no Russian military personnel were injured.

LISTEN TO THIS: ALL of the rebels were SHOT and killed- yet they were all gassed and unconscious. The Russians attacked the theater and shot the Chechens while they lay there. How's that for justice? And I already mentioned that over 60 hostages were killed (only 2 of them were killed by the hostage-takers, when their deadline had passed).

Some nice spicy imagery for ya: Here is the Chechen capital of Grozny after the Russian bombardment and invasion in 2000... the rebels fought to hold the city for over a week before retreating to the southern mountains. This was a city of over 430,000.

the thing that really pisses me off is that putin will probably be given critical acclaim for the handling of this whole debacle.

damn our world sucks. if only people just chilled out and skied. then all would be great. anywhere that has a powder day should just shut down. they get snow in russia. quite a bit in fact. lgive them all some skis and problem solved! I wish it was that simple.

Man, you're right. The slopes would get pretty busy, but it would be all right. I guess the new world government would be Salomon and K2... I'm down with that. The new capital would be Vashon Island. And man, if ol W took up skiing I'd have a lot more respect for him. We should send a pair of skis to the White House, maybe things would take a turn for the better...

hmm.. doesn't the conspiracy theory go that there are already the smartest of our race inhibiting the dark side of the moon?

'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand is a really good book about that, if you're interested... the single most influencial book in my life (besides her other classic, The Fountainhead). Basically, all of the great people in the world go and live by themselves, and the world goes to shit without them in charge.
