Cheapest way to fly with skis?

I was wondering if any of you have any tips you could give me for flying with skis. I want to try to get as much stuff into my carry on, but I know that I will still have to pay the oversize baggage fee (one thing that sucks about skiing). Should I just throw everything into my ski bag and bite the bullet?

Southwest allows two bags free. other airlines do not charge oversize baggage fee for skis. they are excluded from that fee. I flew united and my first bag (ski bag) was free. second bag is $35. They combine the skis and boot bag as a single checked bag. I carried on my boot bag and it fit in the overhead compartment without issue (transpack pro bag) as i didnt want to lose my boots

Ok, thanks.

Also, if you must put them in your bag, take them out when they weigh the bag at the ticket counter and at some airports (it works great at PDX) you have to take the bag over to an oversize baggage area and then when you go there put your boots back in.

I use my ski bag to pack as much of my clothes as possible. Up to the 50lb limit. I have a double ski bag but only one set of skis. Lots of room. Plus all the clothes protect my shit from getting banged around. My boots and rest of my shit fit in the carry on.
