if you want cheap dont stay at a hotel. go for a hostel. the only hostel right in town (basically) is the Shoestring and Boot Pub. It costs about $30 canadian a night. However, it is a shit whole and you will get aids sleeping there. But for one night it is worthwhile. It is about a 7 minute walk out.
I would recommend staying at the Fireside Lodge. It is the pimpest hostel I have ever been too. Super clean and really nice set up. It is even a few dollars cheaper but still basically $30 a night. It is a 3 minute drive back down the highway. there is lots of public tranport however. I would give you the phone number but I dont want everyone booking it up cause Ill probably go there. IM me if you want.
There are a few more hostels there too. a warning: the UBC lodge (aka the Art Hostel) is worse than the Shoestring but it is rediculously cheap and doesnt seem to get as booked. it is right beside the firside on Nordic Drive.
