Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 11 people and injuring 10, French officials say.

Witnesses spoke of sustained gunfire at the office as the attackers opened fire with assault rifles before escaping.

President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity".

A major police operation has been launched in the Paris area to catch the attackers.

Charlie's latest tweet was a cartoon of the Islamic State militant group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The satirical weekly has courted controversy in the past with its irreverent take on news and current affairs.

The magazine was fire-bombed in November 2011 a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

People had been "murdered in a cowardly manner", President Hollande told reporters at the scene. "We are threatened because we are a country of liberty," he added, appealing for national unity.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said in a tweet: "The murders in Paris are sickening. We stand with the French people in the fight against terror and defending the freedom of the press."

'Black-hooded men'

Two of those killed are police officers, France's AFP news agency reports, and five of those wounded are critically injured.

An eyewitness, Benoit Bringer, told French TV channel Itele: "Two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs.

"A few minutes later we heard lots of shots."

The men were then seen fleeing the building.

"It's carnage," French police official Luc Poignant told another French channel, BFMTV.

Police have warned French media to be on alert and pay attention to security following the attack.

And the latest post sent by the Charlie Hebdo Twitter account was a picture of the Isis militant group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi:

Seriously sickening shit.

It is only because Charlie Hebdo released some satirical drawing of the prophet Mahommet some time ago..

You can be damn sure the entire French press is going to publish said drawings first page tomorrow. Hell, everyone should publish and share those.

Everyone-

Do yourself a favor and don't watch the youtube video of this attack. I just did not knowing what was actually going to be in the footage and saw someone basically get executed on the street. It was horrifying and not what I needed to see before 10am on a Wednesday (or ever).

to anybody who follows the quran this killing is justified.

really dont understand why politicians in europe have opened the doors to those who have no interest in becoming a constructive part of western culture.

you can believe what you want but when your culture consists of stoning women for getting raped and killing those who say something you dont like you should stay in your shithole land and not try to spread your demented views in decent places like the uk, france, etc

disgusting.

Wrong. Not all of those who practice Islam will believe this killing is justified.

I can understand the anti-Muslim feeling right now, but to label every single Muslim as fundamentalists is wrong and irrational. There are a myriad of schools of thought within the Muslim world; literalist, traditionalist, reformist, rationalist, and even purely political groups exist. These groups all interpret the Quran, Sunna, and Hadiths in different manners because there is no central religious authority like you would find in Christianity. That is why you find Muslims who openly criticize the fundamentalist and literalist interpretations of the religious texts.

*To anyone who follows it strictly and absolutely....

Thankfully that doesn't include 98% of the billions of Muslims, much like how every other religious group has a small faction of morons who follow their scriptures absolutely.

You're a prime example of how dangerous the media can be in creating unjustified and outright disgusting anti-Muslim sentiment. These weren't Muslims that committed this, they were insane, religious extremists. Get that through your pathetically thick skull.

I can't believe these fuckers got away. I hope Allah drops fire down on their asses... or the CIA gets to them first and they spend the next 10 years in a cramped sweat box with hummus shoved up their asses.

Oh boy, I remember you pulling those stats outa your ass before, also "punishment" totally means executing dudes at gunpoint.

Thoughts and prayers for the victims.

President Hollande told reporters at the scene. "We are threatened because we are a country of liberty," < This statement is tragically comical. A "country of liberty" means a country in denial of the threat of terrorism. It isn't that France was targeted because it is a "country of liberty". These people want to kill anyone who disagrees with them. Being a "country of liberty" just makes it easier to do it.

They think that if they are "nice" and allow Islamic radicals to do and say what they want with complete freedom, then these radicals will love them and leave them alone. If you paint a target on your ass, eventually someone his going to hit the bullseye.

Europe has been pretty laid back about letting people immigrate in. I hope for their sake that this causes their collective sphincters to tighten a little.

Yeah dude, spot on. Bring on UKIP, the Front National, Golden Dawn, it's all good. If there's one thing I've learned, it's to fight hate with hate.

I disagree with you and people who say not to watch these videos. Shouldn't we know the brutality of these attacks? It's easy to ignore and brush over these news stories when its a blurb and a few paragraphs. But when you see the reality of it on video, it changes everything. I feel if more people saw this stuff, it would help to combat these radicals and boost support for fighting these guys. Because as it is, I don't think enough people care. Another reason why I give major props to journalists who go to war torn areas, etc., to show the civilized world what is really happening.

Currently there's protests going on all throughout France and Europe, people are silent and holding up pens.

Hahahaha. Says the guy from Canada which has about the strictest immigration laws on the planet. I will admit freely that I HATE Islamic extremists who kill people and oppress women and people of faiths other than Islam. If that makes be a bad person, I will be happy to have that discussion with God when I die.

You don't have to hate people who are immigrating from the middle east right now to realize that some of them may be Islamic fundamentalist ticking time bombs, and you should scrutinize them a little more than someone immigrating from Iceland.

Just because you don't want to have sex with a woman without a condom doesn't make you a sexist.

This is different statistic. However, it's no less sound than my previous statistics. Read up, little boy:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/many-british-muslims-put-islam-first/

Pay special attention to the fact that a quarter of them (roughly 400,000 muslims in britain alone) supported the 2005 london bombings.

Do you really think that Islam is a new addition to Western Europe? They've been around since the 7th century. Remember that Islam =/= middle east, it includes all of North Africa, which is only a 'short' boat trip to Italy, Greece, France and Spain.

One if the writers, Charbonnier, said in 2012 he wanted to make Islam as acceptable to ridicule and criticize as it is for Jews and Catholics. He went on to say "I'd rather die standing than live kneeling"

A pretty powerful quote after todays events. Je Suis Charlie.

Everybody, I was wrong. I have learned the errors of my ways. Stereotyping muslims just because a lot of them want to kill you is wrong. Any statement forthwith that could be misinterpreted to suggest literally every muslim is a terrorist will be met with immediate removal. Together we will show the muslim world that they're not the only ones who can supress free speech.

Uh yeah it will be removed.

And yeah, to the extent free speech includes hate speech and bigotry, it has always been and will continue to be suppressed on this website, either by its deletion or by the removal of the person posting it from the community altogether.

I understand that these events provoke stupid emotional reaction but the rules on bigotry still apply, so keep it civil.

If that means you'll stop spewing your cretinous bigotry in here, like you do in any other thread even slightly related to muslims, then sign me up.

Bigot (as defined by google): a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.

I know it seems paradoxical, but deleting "bigoted" posts because you don't like the opinions they espouse makes you a bigot. How long are you planning on banning yourself for?

That argument is idiotic. You're aware that it is. Intolerance of hate speech towards identifiable minorities is tolerated - no, encouraged - on this website. Again, it always has been and will continue to be. You will not somehow convince me that this policy is wrongheaded, so you're basically just wasting your time at the moment.

The argument is sound given the policy as previously defined. Of course, the argument does not necessarily hold given redefinition of the policy like you just did. At the end of the day, you can censor people for whatever you want. However, censorship doesn't change opinions. It just creates a false view of reality.

what a great world we live in. say things people disagree with and get murdered for it. Wonderful beings us humans are.

No offense, but arguing with the Mods is similar to arguing with a cop while they are arresting you. You're not going to win and you're just digging yourself into a deeper hole. Just get over it and move on.

Both of these sentences are completely accurate. As for the second, I don't care about changing your hateful beliefs, provided that you don't express them on this privately owned and operated forum. Have a nice day.

There are reports though that these two guys have ties to Al Qaeda. I hope they find those bastards soon.

As stupid as it is, one thing that really pisses me off throughout this whole situation is that it seems nobody in the US cares about this.

After seeing so many people on FB post about Israel and Gaza, I see nothing about this. Not "trending" and nobody seems to give a shit. This wasnt just an attack on a satirical magazine office, it was an attack on free speech reguarding Islam.

I was dead wrong. Anyway, I did some reading up on it and learned a ton. I'm not sure where I read that it was really tough to legally immigrate to Canada, but it was definitely wrong. I found this article especially mind blowing.
https://www.hackcanada.com/canadian/scams/aacanada.txt

Given that, I don't know why all of our illegal immigrants from Mexico don't just keep going up into Canada. Seems like they would get way more if they made it.

Terrible thing to have happen. Literally a direct assault on freedom of speech. Just awful. I feel for those police officers killed. I know they more or less stumbled into the situation purely by chance, but they still stayed and did what they could despite being heavily out gunned. Hopefully all of Paris will turn out for these funerals.

With that said, the government must be upset that these are home grown terrorists. Otherwise they'd be bombing wherever they come from today.

France is not a country these types should mess with. They aren't afraid to send out the legion and drop bombs.
