Charging $$ for logos

Hey M&A,

I'm trying to figure out how to deal with a video I recently made. It's a bike film we shot over the course of the summer. Both the rider and me put in a lot of work to making it. What I'm wondering is whether or not to charge his sponsors for putting their logo's in the film.

The rider wants me to have them in, cause it'll keep his spono's stoked. I'd put them in just to help him out. But when I think more about it, the companies are getting a shitload of free advertising.

They also want me to send them the video so they can upload it to their site, which would get me more exposure but they would profit a lot more than I would. Both the company and him would still benefit from the video, if I didn't have the logos in, but it'd be nice to get a bit of $ for the filming. Gotta balance helping out a friend, getting exposure for myself and also trying to profit from all the money I've invested into filming. What are your thoughts?

Don't put them in for free. I'm doing the same thing with a surfer right now. Def let them put it on their site but tell them they sponsered the rider not you or your video and that if they want their logo in they'll have to pay. Cameras arn't free.

Alright word, thanks for the reply. Do you mean either way give them the file? They wanna upload to their account in pinkbike.

Not to sure what that is. It depends, if it's a site where they post lots of sick videos they didn't make and people are aware of this then I would say go for it. But if it's like a NSers account for their company and you could just post it than I probably wouldn't. If you do give it to them though make sure your name is in their at the end, Created by: your name. If I was you I'd tell them they can post it as long as they say it's by you and ask them for a budget for your next video, worst thing people can say is no and it's completely fair considering their trying to make money by associating your video with their brand. Post the vid on here im interested now.

same here with a ski video. didn't put the logo in because they do not give money to me but they sponsors the people in the video. i love to film but somewhere i need to be paid. camera's do not grow in trees. anyway it's your call.

Bump. Heres the edit, two companies ended up paying for their logo's in. Tell me what you all think. Thanks.

I think you should charge them. How much were you thinking? I would say anything over 15 minutes of solid editing they should have to pay.

Thanks man. I charged one company $250, which I feel like is expensive but relatively cheap for advertisment. The town Kimberley, which had their logo in at the end is hooking me up with a weekend skiing somehwhere. For how many hours we worked on it, it wasn't a ton of cash but we did it for fun in the beginning and wern't expecting anyting outta it: so it worked out alright.

oh nice, sounds like a sweet deal to me considering what your original intentions of it were

and a note to all other people making quality edits, don't let companies use them as free advertising. It's only hurting the action sports film industry and of course jipping you out of some cash

Be it gear, tickets, or accommodations, I have always worked to get something for logo usage. That being said, I need to tighten up on that this season.

that video was ill

i don't bike or know anything besides being around it at woodward and that i was really impressed by the riding and the filming. a bunch of the shots had me thinking "how the hell did he do that?"

keep it up!

hey I know this is kind of thread jacking but I didn't need to find the need for another thread. So I am making a short film of skiing this year and a lot of our riders are sponsored by some small companies to some large ones. So I was wondering because I would have to put them in there for each rider because they want to keep sponsors stoked should I contact each company for compensation of putting the logo in or what? Thanks!

Charge the companies for sure, ask your buddies what their rep's email is. Send them a little thing of what your doing/ proposal on what they get and what you want for it.

You don't HAVE to put the company logos in there. and you never should unless they agree and are paying you - for two reasons.

1. If you vid is good, having their logo in the edit is positive exposure for them, that they should be paying for.

2. If you vid is bad, and the logo is in there, it makes the company look bad. Some companies wouldn't want that, it won't make them happy; it will end with them contacting you and asking to take the edit down until you can put up a version without their logo in it.

It's not even necessarily if it's a bad edit, but it might be an edit that for some reason the sponsor feels de-values their brand. Either way, just don't put logos in without a written, signed agreement.

That being said, there's no reason you can't make an edit and simply not include logos, you don't have to include them if you don't have an agreement. That's why people sponsor people, so their logos appear regardless of who is supporting or not supporting the media directly.

so then should I contact the companies after the video is made to see if they want the logos in or before? also what would be a fair compensation to ask from the companies to put their logos in?

Well, if you are going to make the video anyways, you may have better luck with getting more people to pay you for logos if you contact them with a finished product you can show them. That way they will know what the product is and wont feel like they are gambling on it.

usually, one would approach companies before a project, but you really need a good and consistent rep to do that.

As for the second part of your question - how long is this film project going to be? how many riders are in it, how many companies are you going to approach?

The film should be around 10-20 minutes with around 5-7 riders and we have about 4 sponsors at the moment but our riders are picking them up as we speak so by the end of the project maybe 6 or so...

But are the companies sponsoring your project or just sponsoring your riders? I use logos from companies that sponsor my project (duh) and don't really care about my athlete's individual sponsors. Unless we have an agreement in which they support our webisodes, I'm not going to worry about them until season edit time.
