Champlain or Saint Michael's

Hey I have recently been accepted to both Champlain College and Saint Michael's College. Both of the colleges seem like excellent places and I am having a hard time making a decision. I am wondering if anyone on here goes to either of them and could give me some advice. Thanks alot

st. mikes. i haven't been to champlain, but my friend just graduated from st. mikes and its such a nice school. its pretty small, but i went to the oncampus apartments one night and it was a lot of fun. stay over at either place and see how you like it.

I'm at SMCIf your looking for a small school that parties hard then come here

Personally it turned out to be a little too small for me and I think I am transfering.  But both schools are small and SMC is a solid choice

word up I go to SMC. it's definatly small but its still fun. it's pretty chill. you learn your professors by name and there's definatly a strong sense of community here. it's just outside of burlington though, whereas champlain is right IN burlington. it's not a huge deal though, cause you can get into btown easily enough, and there's always something going on on campus. we have some on campus rail jams too, which are reallly fun. yay smc

i dont go to either but I do live in burlington and i'm on both of those campuses all the time,so heres my take.

st. mikes

-you have to live on campus all 4 years i'm pretty sure, most of the dorms are pretty nice though and you have alot of options as far as living arrangement

-little bigger then champlain, and more of a defined 'campus' area

-there's definately a larger amount of OAR lovin' bros at st.mikes then anywhere else in burlington.

-it's in essex junction and unless you have a car the only way to get to bton is busses, so alot of kids wind up chilling in winooski which kinda sucks

Champlain

-usually only one year in the dorms, and then most people just rent places in burlington

-campus is right in the middle of burlington and all the building are sweet looking old houses for the most part.

-really small.

personally i'd go to Champlain if it was between the two, living right in burlington is way better then out in the sticks.

I went through the same thing

but St Mikes has WAY more programs and sports

plus our ski and snowboard club kills it

not to mention all the fact that we set up a little jib park during the winter on campus

ST MIKES ALL THE WAY

i dont know what kids are talking about st mikes being "in the sticks"

we are like 3 miles out of church st

I've walked it a couple times

its mad easy to get downtown and party at UVM and Champlain

plus you cant beat the st mikes community, its so chill here

oh yeah, you can totally walk downtown from st.mikes. but remember to bring plenty of extra water, a good pair of boots, snacks, a gas stove, and a compass.

i'm loling so hard. i can't concentrate on my work cos the people across the hall are drunkenly singing, playing the guitar, and playing OAR through their speakers.

Straight up, if you WANT to have fun, goto Champlain, it's right in the heart of Burlington, and everyone there is MAD legit.

I don't go to either of the schools, I went to UVM. I have heard nothing but complaints from the kids who goto St Mikes, even some who posted in response to this thread saying its mad fun.

St Mikes is also NOT IN BURLINGTON, and unless you have a car forget about getting here easily, or staying late on weekends, seeing as the buses stop at like 9pm from st mikes to here and back.

your allowed to have a car second semester freshman year at smc and as long as your not a crackhead or a fatass you can walk 3 miles downtown, or ride a bike.  not that hard.  I personally like being removed from btown by a few miles.  best of both worlds

if you go to smc you might get caught in the smc bubble, the bubble is you never really leave the campus. ever. i know a lot of kids at smc and they never go any where. it is kind of creepy. And a 3 mile walk would suck, you can see downtown from champlain, there is a lot more to do at around champlain, people have apts with rails set up them, as well on campus. it just matters on if you rather be in a bubble boy or be free roaming.

to point out the bubble affect ever more so , is that it is mostly smc people posting on here, while people at champlain are out having fun around town.

says the champlain kid as they post

It would be more creepy if I was wandering around burlington at 12:30 on a fucking monday.  Completely illogicl argument.  Some kids choose to stay on campus at any school, they are happy, have what they need, and feel safe.  Its their lives dont worry about it.  There are those kids at every school just cause you know a few kids who dont leave campus much at SMC thats cool.  Plenty of kids do the same at every school across the country including UVM and Champlain.  Personally I ski 4 times a week and go downtown when I feel the need.  Downtown excitement wears off 10 minutes into freshman year anyway. I can go to a fucking mall anywhere.  Anyway the "bubble effect" is "bullshit" college is what you make it, grow up.  I personally didnt like SMC in the beginning but now love it.  I'd rather be a few minutes outside of burlington anyway.  Best of both worlds.  Bottom line your not gonna get a solid ground of info off NS.  Visit, see how you like locations, stay a night if you can.

the bubble you talk about is SMC's community, and that's pretty much one of the main reasons kids come here. ya there are kids here who never leave campus but that's what they like to do. I like to go skiing and hang out downtown sometimes and hang out on campus at other times. its about what you want to do and what friends you want to hang out with. plus, those kids who never leave campus often times are some of the best kids to party with. and there are kids like that at every school.....

their two different schools though and it's all about what you think is gonna work best for you. it's really dumb arguing about them.

oh ya, and saying that it's mostly smc kids posting here.......sorry I can't break my NS addiction that I acquired about 4 years ago.

wow... alright I'll probably get some hate for this but I'm going to have to give my 2 cents

I don't go to either of them and really wouldn't want to no offence... but I live across the street from champlain, spent time at both and know kids from both colleges.... and I have to say that unless you are a certain type of person you will want to fucking shoot yourself in the face with a .9 if you choose SMC . I honestly don't know why anyone would choose to go there, it seems horrible, obviously I don't know anything about the classes for either but why would you want to be isolated like that in a semi-religious closed environment?

I really don't know any completely normal kids who like it, my 3 friends started there last year and transfered out right away if that tells you anything. St Mikes seems like fuckin boarding school at a college level... that pretty much sums it up.

Cause what I'm saying is you really only have a chance to live the college experience once and there are so many options, might as well do it right

Soo... definitely go with Champlain if that is your only other choice, you will be very very happy when your not stuck in the middle of nowhere for 4 years

1. Its not isolated, I don't get whats so hard about going downtown or having a good time on campus

2. Theres fuckin weird people everywhere, they probably stand out more from the 2000 kids at SMC than the trillion at UVM but theres a lot of awesome people here that love the school and just love life

3. Just because you are better friends with kids from Champlain, than from SMC, you can't base a decision on that

I don't even know you but you rip on smc all day. Thats cool if thats what your into but whatev.  Obviously the school is only for certain people, nobody is denying that, its a small close knit community, and thats why people fuckin choose to go there.  To say anybody who likes it is a weirdo is immature and has no base.  If thats your opinion your entitled to it but I've met some weird fuckers from other schools around here and don't go saying anybody who likes the school is weird.  Thats just fucking stupid.

haha... no sorry dude. your college just sucks and thats a fact . im not even hating

Im not better friends with anyone at Champlain. One is a shitty religious boarding school in the middle of nowhere and one is a small, sorta decent college with nice dorms in a sick town

but have fun living on campus for 4 years ! sounds like a blaast yo

go puuurrple knights !! SMC pride whaa t

haha ok dude, could argue this shit all day an never get anywhere anyway

btw i would say I will enjoy my 4 years here but I'm transferring  lol not cause i dont like it though

I just cant afford that shit, I aint g enough for SMC.  Just sad I gotta bounce from all of B Town.  Headed to the big UCONN

damn son. I didn't know those catholic racers were so G

but yeah theres definitely some hoochies to slay down in Conn , you'll have a good time. If not there is always 50's crib close by heard he has some dece parties

haha yee they just wear the purple spandex over their bapes.  Fiddy actually sold his crib in CT I lived 10 mins from him.  But jea I'm really excited about conn, time to experience this "real college" I've heard about.

well that was cute...

anyways, SMC and Champlain both have positive sides and negative sides to them.

SMC you do have to live on campus all 4 years but they have nice places to live

Champlain is super artsy and most people that go there know what they want to do, they have an upside down ciriculum(sp?)

You can def find a place to park your car first semester of campus, i did it and never once got a ticket. Champlain you cant...

you will always have time to get off campus cause people alwayss want to go into burlington.

ive walked into btown with colly once, so it took us 40 mins, it was a nice summer night.

SMC is a better college, champlain is more of a community college in my eyes. no hate though

both are weak in my opinion.

seriously, why eat a hamburger when you can eat steak? UVM is the solution here.

and on a side note, both SMC and Champlain kids are traditionally "strange" by nature

and sarah, its spelled "curriculum"... SMC didn't teach you how to use google obviously

yea i would have definitely gone to uvm but they dont take part in the tuition exchange program. but thanks for all the information everybody

There have been late buses back to St Mikes since November, and it will be like that again next year. Also its only a 10-15 minute bike ride downtown, which I like doing quite a bit. While it is technically a catholic school, the only religious stuff I have ever experienced is the two classes you are required to take, which are basically just history courses about the religion. You can also live off campus, a couple of my friends lived off campus this year, its just a pain in the ass to get, though next year they are letting some seniors live off campus. Its not a bad school, though the raise in tuition is fucking bullshit, and I probably wouldn't have gone here if it was that much when I first started.

Champlain is in a really nice area, but that's about all I know so I'm not going to try to say stuff about it.

St Mikes is far from being in the middle of nowhere, try going to Alfred University. Fucking blows.

and my point remains the same, which is I'm not sure how st mikes stays in business when you can choose to go to school in burlington

fuck religion, what happened to a separation of church and state

Thats only federally funded schools I think. St Mikes is private (?) so they can do what they want with requiring religious classes. And its openly churchy so anyone who goes there knows about the religious requirements.

Until about a year ago I though Champlain and CCV were the same thing, Champlain is kind of obscure but haven't heard anything bad about it. I wouldn't ever want to go to St Mikes though.

go to uconn. 90 - 150 minutes to a good set of mountains, the school itself is like a city, and we know how to throw bangers. and not just parties or get togethers. straight up bangers.

The annual Spring Weekend concert has attracted top artists and bands such as Outkast and Third Eye Blind in 2000, Guster and Nelly in 2001, Fat Joe and Nine Days in 2002, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes in 2003, Ludacris and Kanye West in 2004, Nas and Fabolous in 2005, OAR in 2006, Dashboard Confessional, Reel Big Fish and The Starting Line in 2007, and Method Man, Redman, Flo-Rida, and T-Pain in 2008. It is also known for sizable outdoor parties that typically draw well over 10,000 attendees, particularly at one of its parking lots (X-Lot), and the privately-owned Celeron and Carriage House apartments, located less than a mile off campus. Some of these parties have led to near-riot situations, characterized by incidents of property destruction and unruliness requiring a sizable police presence every year, thereby giving Spring Weekend a degree of local notoriety

^^ Haha yee uconn, as far as Saint Mikes kids being strange, I would say strange as far as being kinda immature/sheltered but theres deff some legit people. Its been fun, pumped for UCONN though

Champlain because the work load isnt shitty, you dont have to live in dorms at all if you dont want to ( Saint Mikes all 4 years to what ive heard and UVM the first 2). Baller technology and small classes. Everyones super chill and the ski scene is super fresh. I will be there next year and stowe will be the ski place of choice, plus bolton has a 30 dollar season pass for champlain students. Boo Yah! But honestly it depends on your major.

If you're looking to get a job in burlington, champlain's a really good bet. They've got more connections w/VT companies than St Mikes or UVM b/c of their adult education programs. St Mikes is a better school. UVM's good, but I don't know too many people who graduated from there who work in the field they got a degree in w/o some serious networking efforts.

nah fuck saint mikes

palce is straight yp gay

Champlain... seems chill . just not that legit of a school if ur trying 2 go big

COME to chaMPLAIN!!! be a beaver! haha

jk i dont know but champlain is definitely such a sick school. so fun really nice kids and non religious. at SMC you have to take religion!!! unless you are really religious or have some sort of major intended at SMC that champlain doesnt have.

do your research tho. one of htem could be better than the other for you. its a personal choice.

well champlain is the size of a large high school while uvm has 10,000 students.... so if thats what you're referring to as 'shit fest'
