So got caught shoplifting about a month ago. I stole something that was around 15-20$ but now the palmer law office contacted me and wanted me to pay 775.. I'm 17 and i dont have the money to pay any of it off. Originally it was 500$ however they said the sent mail to me about this fee. So now they are charging an extra 275$ for a late fee. I called them back and they said my case is an the bridge of civil court. Should i or should i not pay this fee. Some of my friends told me they did that just to scare you into paying the fee. is this true?

so what the authorities say, and if you friends all shoplift and have had similar experiences get new friends, then you dont have to be punished for doing dumb shit like shoplifting 15$ worth of shit

I know guys i cant really do anything about the past.. but thats besides the pint. should i or not does anyone know anythign about the civil court system??

what state are you in.

if it's california, dont do it. they are doing everything and anything in their power to get some extra $$, especially if the cops.

you may not be speeding or driving recklesly but shit, they'll pull you over if your tires aren't at maximum PSI and fully inflated. watch out

I'd be excited too.

LOLJK

all i got from this thread was that im a dumbass.. i knew before but i need actual help from someone who knows their shit

honestly at 17 working sucks and your money is gone so fast. if you actually pay for your stuff such as gas, insurance, gear, etc spending money is painful and people slip up sometimes

inb4 i made serious bank at my grandaddies golf course and bought 4 fd suits at 17 post

talk to a lawyer, though there are people on here that are decently versed in law, lawyers are paid to deal with this stuff. talk to the rents maybe they can help you out a little

dont pay it. wait until you are 18 and sit your fine out in jail. in mt you can sit in jail and they give you 50 bucks a day for your legal fines

I think you are cool because you shoplift.

No, I'm just kidding; you're are douchebag. The best possible way I can think of for you to avoid paying the fine is to kill yourself. Seriously, it will slightly improve society.

Lol'd irl!

But seriously...you moan about that your cash if gone fast? wtf...loser. Why does it suck to have a job when you're 17? Like age fucking matters?

Pay the fine and learn something from it...Nut op shut up...bitch

hokay i been in this situation before. they wanted 300 bucks so i just paid cause u dont want the cops getting involved and if you pay you wont have any criminal charges. just pay it somehow and to everyone else the kid knows he fucked up and hes a dumbass so u can stop being a bunch o shitnuggets

Were you actually convicted? Was the fine imposed by a judge? If so, you need to pay it, and the sooner the better because it'll accrue late fees as time goes by. What you did was stupid, you must pay the penalty and hope to learn your lesson. If you don't have the money, consider earning it somehow or you may have to suck it up and sell something like ski equipment to pay this off. That's the price you pay for doing something like this.

working at any age sucks. My job consists of watching baseball and throwing out drunks, and I love it...but there are still days when I'm leaving at 2pm, knowing I won't be back til 1am, and I think about how much more fun it would be to hang out with my friends for once, or enjoy a nice night at home. But such is work...

Your money is only gone if you're stupid and don't know how to practice any form of self restraint. Part of life is seeing something you want, but not getting it because you can't afford it, and would rather put gas in your car than own some stupid thing.

There are tons of things I'd love to own, and things I could have bought. But that would mean I would be living beyond my means, so I don't own them.

Do this, that would be two weeks in jail, and you can tell us about your debtors prison experience after.

pretty sure your the dumbass. Definitely don't pay for a lawyer. If you happen to know a lawyer it would be a good idea to talk to them. But at the same time your only 17, not even an adult yet and the worst that can happen is they set you up for a court date, which really isn't a big deal. My bet is if you just wait it out for a court date and plead guilty the fine will be much lower than 775. Last time I was in court I saw someone get charged with theft and the fine was 200 or so. I would avoid paying that 775 at all cost.

Oh grow up, u dun goofed and if you can't afford the consequences you should have considered them before hand. I've had several jobs since I was 16, sure they suck and you don't make much but I hardly think you are in a position to be complaining. Pay it.

this. everyone has a run in with the law at some point or another in their life. Anyone that doesn't is a straight up pussy and don't take any risk in life. I hope everyone reeming this kid out for a simple theft of 15 dollars get charged with a more serious crime in their lifetime just to see how much of a bitch the legal system is. Live and learn bro, this is just a little bump in your life, don't let it bother you that much.

there's a difference between a run in with the law and shoplifting. most people have some police intervention because they were doing some stupid shit.

me and my buddies got into a shit ton of trouble awhile back because we were biking around somewhere in the woods and thought it would be epic to make a jump, and clear a bonfire. We damn near burned everything down, and the police/fire department got involved.

So yea, it was a run in with the law, even though it was an accident (and the fire dept, so if anything, we one upped you) but in the end, it was stupid kids being stupid without realizing it. We had what seemed like an awesome idea go wrong.

What you did was completely voluntary. It wasn't an accident or something getting out of hand. You willingly did it. shoplifting means you have no respect, no common sense, and are a total dumbass.

Seriously? There is a difference between taking a risk and being straight up dumb. Skydiving is a risk, stealing is dumb. This is the Internet, since when do we play nice anyway? He stole, he has to pay for his crime. I won't think less of him for it given he takes responsibility for his mistakes.

you got lucky to get off with just that.

live in Saudi Arabia and they'd cut your hand off no doubt.

and stealing/lying are two things I absolutely hate. so pay the fuck up and don't bitch about it. If you had to pay any less then our justice system doesn't work properly. You need to be deterred from doing it again.

WOW is all i can say to this. Coming from a kid that burned down a forest in order to better his life and hopefully come out with a bike trail. Your action was just as voluntary as his and to me burning down the wilderness in order to better yourself is far worse than stealing something worth 15 bucks from probably a Walmart or another company that hired people over in India to produce for 2 cents and hour. Your taking something that was put on this earth and destroying it. It will never be there again and it's people like you that make the forest service so strict on matters like that. I expect you to respond to this post with an argument about how stealing something worth 15 dollars is worth more than burning down the wilderness. Because to me, your crime is far worse and I think of you much less than a person that was trying to sneak something out of a store. Your action was far more voluntary than stealing, you actually took the time to light a match and watch a burn.

Yes, making a fire of any kind in the forest is dumb but he didn't INTEND to burn down part of the forest. When you steal, you are stealing because you mean to do it. That is the difference even if starting a small forest fire is more damaging than stealing something for $15.
