Castle vs Fernie?

Hey guys i posted this in the Interior forum as well but I wanna hear what everyone has to say about this.

I'm moving down to Crowsnest Pass this summer for a year and

need to decide pretty quickly if I wanna get a pass for Castle or

Fernie. I've never been to Castle, but I've heard really good things, plus

its a bit closer and cheaper.

Who's season is longer, who gets

better snow, and who has the best terrain? Obviously Fernie is quite a

bit bigger, but I'm cool with a smaller mountain if its got good

terrain.

both good hills. castle is smaller with a community feel to it. i heard they had some bomber pow days last season. ill give u my personal experience: windblown somtimes with rocks and shale on some runs. terrian is sick but time consuming to get to and less of it.

fernie: awsome town, great commuinity feel as well but more commercialized. more terrain better snow more times than not and faster chairs. my personal chioce fernie for sure. go with the Griz

I just spent a winter living in Fernie so I'm biased but I'd say Fernie. We got so many epic pow days it was crazy. Most of the time when we were getting dumped on castle seemed to get a little less. So many 30cm + days! Both have good terrain. If you live in Fernie get a job so that you can ski weekdays because thats the best time hands down.. pow lasts for days instead of minutes. Fernie has a lot of aussies, kiwis, and britts during the winter so if you work on the mountain thats mainly who you work with. Good partying there to.

Castle had some beyond epic days too. 70 cm in less than 48 hours.

You dont happen to know a Kiwi guy named Nick do you??

castle mountain can be utterly epic when it snows. I went there a few times last season and I was blown away. There's so many less people that you actually really get to enjoy the powder. having said that, when castle doesn't get snow, and it's icy as shit and windy, it's definitely not the most fun mountain to be skiing on. I've been skiing at fernie for about 10 years now so I'm also a bit biased. Castle's seasons passes are a whole lot less expensive I believe. it does have a lot more of a smaller community feel to it too, like someone else pointed out already.

Having never been a passholder at each but having ridden them on pow days over the last 15 yrs, I would definitely say that I would rather ski at Castle on any good day. Castle's days are a little fewer and farther between, however the good snow lasts for a long time and is replenished by wind travel. There is never a risk of rain however you must take into account the significantly less stable Alberta Rockies snowpack. This past season Castle was second only to Whistler in total snowfall and the snowpack was relatively stable. That being said if you are not a strong skier Castle will make you one very quickly or you will be going to the bar to drink away any hits to your ego. Fernie is a cool place but its flat and puntered out! And last but not least check out this video from Castle if you have any doubts. http://www.gnarstars.com/video/

idea was pretty gay anus= gayness. but seriously "bailer" the name says it all! speaking of which when are making it out to do some drinking jason

Does castle have a good park? Im guessing no half pipe but do they have any decent jumps or anything? Rails? I am new to the area and i think cop is to far from where i live.

i recommend checking out nelson and rossland too, they're a lot like fernie except real estate hasn't discovered them yet.

yeah right! go try and buy a condo on red, the prices are fucking flying. But if you buy a place in trail or that mickey mouse town halfway to red it'll be pretty cheap.

Skied Fernie for 10 years, lived there for two. Never skied Castle, I'd like to, but Im too busy. Im not going to make an effort to go ski castle at all this year because Im 10 minutes away from my favorite (the best) snow in North Western America. Fernie has no park, but if you live in Fernie full time, chances are its for the pow, good friends, even better vibe, and if y'all like blazing then ya dun' have to look too far.

Yah, bailer said it, find a job where you can ski weekdays, maybe tend bar. Stay away from weekends if ya dun like Albertans or JAFAs. I work full time (mon - thurs, 10 hours a day) and i ski fri sat and sun. I also coach skiing so I only really have two free days a week. We have 15 cm rule at work meaning if it snows more than 15 cms, take the morning or afternoon off to go shred. But as I found out last season, the only thing that follows 3 days of pow in a row is Monday or more pow... yeah, we get alot snow. Who said Castle got second to Whistler. I thought we had over 11-12 metres in Fernie, did Whis and Castle get more? I think buddy was lying.

Fernie doesn't have a park, we have 9-10 rails set up and they change them every now and again. Its real boring. Your only 3 hours away from Calgary and a fun park, but unless you need to go to Calgary for pipe training every so often, I wouldn't bother, because we'll be taking all your pow.

But I think you should move to Castle. Fernie's full.

castle got the same amount of snow as fernie last year and it was lighter....

But most years, fernie tends to get more of the big dumps.

Castle has longer runs, but it is tough to beat fernie's trees.

Tough call, but i would go with cheaper and closer.

honestly just go to fernie. It's an actual ski town and has that feel. The closest town to castle is pincher creek and that's a ranch town. YOu'd probably make more friends in fernie and have a better time. Buy some skins though if you want to ski anything gnarly
