Cash for Clunkers: Ideas

So i know there is a thread on the program already, highlighting how it is a failure. I was looking into it, and its actually a pretty good deal if it applies to you. Im driving a 96 explorer, which is ultimately becoming a piece of shit. Im lookin at applicable cars that MSRP around 15-19,000 and apply to the CARS program. So far ive found the jeep patriot, which is no longer really an option since no dealer within 200 miles has any left. Next is the toyota tacoma, which is a sick truck IMO and im definately considering it. Lastly im lookin at a kia sportage, which looks ok, im not sure if im into it.
My question is does anyone know of any other makes/models that apply? They need to be at least 4mpg about the 17 combined mpg on my explorer, and start listing around my price range. Also, does anyone here drive a sportage? If so do you like it? Lets here what you guys think. This might help out a bunch of people if others are looking to take advantage of that deal.

A google search would answer everything. Consumer reports has a list of the top cars that you can get with the CARS program. Other then that, I have been researching and the tacoma wins. It is bulletproof

I have googled it, those three cars are the ones i found. I was just looking for opinions, i dont know why i value NS ideas over the rando google reviews, but, ya. thanks for the input i was thinkin the tacoma too. I also found a 02 pathfinder on craigslist, i love those cars. Also might talk to a dealer about a used wrangler, if i can haggle a price down i might go with that.

Same dude. When I start driving I am getting a Camry that is as old as me. All it needs is new tires, brakes, belts, and hoses and it will run for thousands of miles more. The car is as old as me too. I am looking forward to driving it, but then I get a car of my choice when I leave for college. Toyotas last forever and parts are cheap and pretty easy to find.

I didn;t read this post at all, but C4C is the dumbest shit ever done by this country.

DONT BUY INTO IT.

Whatever car you have, contact me and I will get you to 20+ MPG

The government just changed the program and now the dealership can order any car not on the lot directly from the manufacturer

I'm really pissed

I have a 1992 BMW 318i

its WAS clocked at an average of 22 mpg, but im sure it doesnt get that today

its worth like $1,000

It doesn't qualify because it got 22mpg back in the day

im so pissed...

THIS PROGRAM IS BULLSHIT, it is costing all of us who didn't trade in cars 3,000,000,000 dollars plus. And it isn't stimulating the economy or making green cars on the road. People can get Hummers through this program.

It's not good

yes an H3, a SUV, the opposite of the "green" cars the program aimed to put on the roads. I don't want my tax money paying for a piece of someone's H3

Do you realize what 3 billion is in the U.S.'s budget is? It is fucking nothing

I agree with you on the hummer bit though. Once I saw a hummer with a license plate that said "Respect Life" and had a flower on it. I thought it was quite ironic

I know 3 billion is nothing, I'm just making a point. It's still a lot of money for a program that I don't think should have been used. It had good principle but it doesn't work. Capitalism will take its course

I just dont get why everyone wants to deal with a friggin car payment at this time...

But... hey... I dont see a huge problem with it. It helps the auto industry, it helps the banks, it helps people get better gas mileage, and lower emissions vehicles, which help on an environmental scale, and.. it helps the consumer who needs a more reliable car.

I am annoyed that they are destroying all the cars. they should donate the higher mileage models to low income families and car donation groups...

That said, there are still plenty of used cars out there... California is FULL of them.

thats where you're missing the big picture. american auto is done. dead. gone. Giving money to Detroit Companies is like giving Heroin to the junkie about to OD on a corner downtown. let them die in peace, don't give them more cash that they will squander on useless shit cars and overpaid workers. buy german or japanese. also, if you want a real "green" car, buy a diesel compact. oh wait, nobody sells them here, because most americans are brainwashed idiots who listen to CNN, Fox, or People magazine, instead of intellectuals.

thanks for that link. I do not approve of buying any new car when you have an old car that works fine. It costs something like 20,000 tons of CO2 to produce a new car alone. I liked reading that, I want people to live more green, that means not buying H3's but also anything you don't need... hence a new car. Public transportation should be used instead of even owning a car in most cities. Again, thank you for that link

dude the patriot isnt out of the qestion since so many dealers are out of stoct of cash for clunker cars you can now get a voucher to use at a later date

get the Tacoma, Toyota's last for ever. The toyota sequoia is also a good option i love that thing. you should look into it.

im going to trade my 92 ford explorer in and get a new 09 subaru outback. you need to look at all the requirements for the program because its a real pain in the ass. hopefully i will have my car on monday!

and politics aside, the CARS plan has been a mess from the beginning even irrespective of the money running out within days. For one they change the rules pretty much daily. Dealers have been unable to access the website because it keeps crashing. Nobody really knows how many submissions are backed up do to this. Many dealers are not convinced they'll ever get reimbursed so they are not participating. I was looking at a forum for delears and some have said they have submitted upwards of 100 or more clunkers and have received money on none of them yet. so they are down at least $4500 x 100 currently. We shall see if they end up getting paid back.

so i ended up going for a used for runner. its a 1999, military owned, minty as fuuuuck.its also a wierd edition with a supercharger that isnt sold in the states, this one made its way to hawaii and then to NY, and now its mine! just put a deposit on it this morning, gettin a loan tomorrow, so stoked.
