*ATTENTION* THIS COULD CONCERN EVERYONE WHO RIDES IN THE MIDWEST SO PLEASE READ IT ALL! WE CANNOT LET THIS TREND SPREAD THROUGH THE REST OF THE MIDWEST!
First off I will start out by explaing that the potential sale of Cascade to Perfect North Slopes was terminated earlier this summer and all the boys from Indiana(Tom Price, Stephen Osborn, and Travis Feiss) went back to Indiana. They, along with Jake Blaskowski, were the ones who gave us a sick fucking park this past season. So, that is where the ball started to roll. So, there have been rumors flying around for the last month or so about whether or not the Superpark is moving. These rumors seem to be coming true. The way I have come to understand it is that the Upper Terrain Park and the Superpark are going to be just normal groomer runs. They are giving us the upper North wall for a rail yard and maybe some small jumps. Here is a picture so you can get the idea... not sure how accurate it is... and the white scribbles is where there were some trees which they cut down this summer...
Here is a post from the Terrain Park Supervisor posted on the locoparks.com forums. "Alright guys. The rumors are true. The Upper Park and the Superpark are no longer terrain runs. As of today, the terrain park will be from the top of Mogul Lift through the North Wall park. Looks like we will have 20+ rails on the upper half, and then the jumps below it. "
Here is an email straight from Dave and Brendt the guys who have been thrown into the position of managing the parks. PLEASE READ IT!!!!
"Dave Madsen and Brendt Sarnwick here. Dave is the new Terrain Park Manager, Brendt is the new Assistant Terrain Park Manager, and Jake Blaskowski is the new Terrain Park Supervisor. We can all appreciate your concerns regarding the Super Park here at Cascade Mountain. This change is a nationwide / international change that is taking place in terrain parks and ski resorts all over the world. There is an industry trend to downsize or remove terrain parks at ski resorts. I am not sure if you heard, but all resorts in Canada have removed all terrain parks from their slopes. Many large Midwestern resorts have fully removed terrain parks from their trails, and many more have downsized their parks to a few rails, and a few small jumps. These changes are based on legal advice, and insurance issues. We are not the only resort in this trend. We do however, feel very lucky to still have multiple parks here, and we are going to put as much energy and effort into making these parks as good as we possibly can. We also encourage you to support us, and to understand that we did not suggest, nor make these changes ourselves; we are only trying to work as hard as we possibly can with the resources we have available. We do understand that we will be taking the brunt of the negative comments and criticism, but ask that local park riders such as yourself, understand and support our efforts, to provide you, and all other park riders (from near and far) to visit Cascade Mountain this winter with the best possible features around. We are truly concerned with the competitions, and Brendt, as Event Coordinator, (whom has handled the publicity end of all competitions personally, including The Midwest Open and has marketed it successfully, reaching as far as California and Canada) and Dave, as Terrain Park Manager will make every effort to keep the competitions functioning at the same level and quality that you and others have come to expect. We in no way, shape, or form wish to throw away all the hard work we have put into making these events and parks as reputable as they are. Brendt and Dave have put in uncountable hours, energy, effort, time, and hope into these events, and have seen them grow in ways we never thought possible. Your support goes much farther than you could imagine, and the criticism we are seeing has been very frustrating. We are always available via phone, (1-608-742-5588 ext Brendt 256, Dave 224) if you wish to speak to us directly or email directly, dmadsen@cascademountain.com, or bsarnwick@cascademountain.com. We are also in the office Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 4:30pm if you would like to speak to us in person. Our hope is that you can pass this information along to others like yourself that are disappointed, but can hopefully understand our situation. Any future comments can be directed to Dave Madsen or Brendt Sarnwick."
Now here is my 2 cents on this whole deal... First of all DO NOT hate on Brendt, Dave, or Jake. This was none of their faults and I know they are going to do there best to give us a sick park. Second, DO NOT judge the new park without coming to ride it, lets see how this plays out and give it all a chance, if the park sucks, then we can start bitching. And lastly please DO voice your concerns to the people at cascade. Don't hate on them, just try to let them know your dissappointment and and opinions you have about the whole situation.
Here are my concerns:
1) The slope on the upper park isn't great enough to constitute building a jump any bigger than probably about 20 feet.
2) If they do have big jumps at the Competitions people will be more likely to get injured, because they haven't hit them all year. The level of competiton will be so low because people don't go all seaon without practicing on big jumps and then go out and throw down big tricks the first time you hit one. AND no one will be able to learn new tricks on a 20 foot jump
3)We are taking a big step back with this... pretty soon you will be getting your tickets clipped for your skis leaving the snow.
One last statement, i know this is a long post but bear with me. Cascade was dirrectly affected by the law suit happy trend going around. This summer they were dealing with a law suit dealing with an injury which occured in the terrain park. Cascade Won. Now, i would imagine that this directly connects with the downsizing of the parks, but frankly i think it's crap. As a ski patroller, I have seen some HUGE bounds and leaps in the Terrain park safety in the last year. From documenting any and ALL injuries in the terrain parks and then inspecting the features after each injury to the terrain park staff keeping all features in EXCELLENT shape, I did not see a single feature that i would consider dangerous, IF you are following the Smart Style Code, which is posted EVERYWHERE!. Also the banning of rental skis in all terrain parks was an excellent move which greatly reduced the number of joeys and fibs in the parks, sitting on landings, and getting hurt. Now wouldn't you think with all the improvements with safety and covering their asses liability wise that they would expand and improve the terrain parks... i guess not.
That's it that's all.
CLIFFNOTES: CASCADE MOUNTAIN GOT RIDE OF THE TERRAIN PARKS IN THE UPPERPARK AND THE SUPERPARK (THE MAIN TERRAIN PARKS). AND THEY MOVED THE PARKS TO THE UPPER NORTH WALL, WHICH IS PRETTY SMALL AND FLAT IMO.
