Carrying a tripod on a plane

Are you allowed to carry on a tripod? Mine is small, and I can attach it to the outside of my backpack but there's no room for it in my suitcase, which is also carry on (trying not to check my stuff)

Will they make me check it? Anyone have experience in this? I'm not finding too much information online and I can't talk to real people when I call TSA or Delta

ya a tripod can be a weapon. My dads a pilot for a major airline in canada and after 9/11 they took away his tweezers and nail clippers. But thats the past and they will probably still tell you not to take it on. If you cant bring on shampoo you cant bring on a long blunt heavy metal object. you will probably have to check it in.

How about you just call the airline or email them. I know such a ridiculous plan could never work. So what you should actually do is have the tripod surgically implanted into your leg and tell them it is a special type of shin brace~

i used to have a small-ish tripod and a big backpack and they always let me take it, the question is will they pay more attention to it strapped to the outside

Call and ask? Last time I traveled I put mine in a suitcase, but I was lucky it fit. I've seen kids bring skateboards on planes, I've never done that because I'd be the unlucky kid they stop. A skateboard is a better weapon than a tripod though, so I don't see why not.

i was not allowed on american airlines this summer. but i only tried because a friend said he had no problem on continental.
i think its honestly hit or miss so i would just check it

I have brought my tripod on planes with no issues many times. It is a pretty small one though (about 40 cm long when folded) It fits inside my pack but usually I strap it outside. I also have brought ski boots and my helmet on board which can be used just as effectively as a weapon.

Better plan call the airport its not the airline that hires security its the airport authority and just ask to speak to a security director and they will know for sure.

I took my tripod on a plane inside my backpack. They had no problems with it except when I took it out to film Hood from the air. The flight attendant got pretty pissed actually.

wrong. u can bring skateboards, ski boots all things i think would be just as lethal as a tripod. i wouldnt worry about it to the OP
