Car Purchase Help

Hey NS, I need your help, I purchased a car today, from this guy, I liked it, sounded nice, looked nice. it had a few things wrong with it, no power steering which he told me in advance, no headliner. But when he showed up the car had a cracked windshield, he never told me about that even when I clearly asked for everything that was wrong with it, I talked him down due to the windshield, so I went inside to sign the papers and such and hand him the money, he hands me the title I walk to the car and try to open the door but it doesn't open he then procides to show me that only the 2 back doors work, the door was left open when I first got to the car that's the reason I did not know it was busted, little after little things start falling apart. I take the blame for that I should have been more thoroug, but hey I'm only 16, and that's the other problem, you have to be 18 to buy a car, I did not know that, the guy selling the car either didn't know or didn't want to know, so technically the purchase was illegal, I now have grown a deep hate for this car because have all the things that I have found broken, I'll give a little list of everything wrong with this car...

No power steering

no ac

two front doors do not open from outside

radiater fan must manually be turned on

cluster lights hook up to cigarette lighter port

driver seat is not on the tracks

passenger rear window does roll

grill is connected by a rubber band

zip ties fuckin everywhere

smells like satan shoved a cig up his butt and farted

no headliner

alignment is off

cracked windshield

back seats won't latch

that is what I know for sure, anyways my parents are pissed and working on getting this guy to give me my money back, so do we have a legal advantag? I know I am an idiot for getting it in the first place, but I wasn't thinking, by the way it was a 1991 vw Jetta gli and I got it for $1100, should I work hard on getting my money back? Any alternate options? Helpful advice or entertaining comments will result in a +K and also this was all typed mobile and my phone is shattered so please excuse insufficient grammar/spelling God bless.

Why in the fuck would you not bring your old man or someone who isn't completely retarded like yourself to look at it with you?

Well op, should've looked into it more first but you should be okay going in to legal precedings. Don't take my word for it cause I'm not a lawyer but you are the minor in this situation and he took advantage of you. So that should give you some leverage. Also if you have and evidence of what he told you was wrong that excluded the other things that could help to as he held back information. Goodluck

it sounds like you overpaid for a beater with blatantly obvious issues. it's not like the previous owner blindfolded you when you went to check it out. don't be afraid to walk away from shit deals like this in the future, hopefully you learned your lesson

Do a little research. There are laws that will aid you due to the fact that you're under 18. Essentially you get a Get Out Of Jail Free card on this because you're under 18. I don't feel like doing the research, but find the law, quote it to the guy, threaten legal action, and you will get all of your money back. Should be open and shut.

In short, this is what will work for you:

"In order for a contract to be binding, the parties to it must be competent to make it. A person cannot make a promise he cannot fulfill because of some legal or other disability. An insane person is unable to make a binding agreement. A minor under age 18 does not have full power to contract. Such persons are incompetent to enter into a binding contract. Disability (incompetence) cannot be used to gain an unfair advantage. If a person under disability fulfills her part of a supposed contract, the other party cannot repudiate the agreement. Similarly, a minor may not be able to repudiate a contract where there would be unfair loss to the other party. See Part X at "Family Rights and Obligations," and at "Minors and Their Rights."
http://www.fangerlaw.com/understanding-contracts.php

You, being under the age of 18, fall into the same category in the eyes of the law as those who are disabled. As such, your contractual agreement is not legally binding. He gained an unfair advantage due to the fact that you are disabled (by age, inexperience, etc). I recommend you research the particulars of the law, print it out, highlight the parts that pertain to your specific case, and confront the guy. Get your parents involved. You're clearly not intellectually ready to handle this kind of thing yourself. I hope you learned from this and will not make similar mistakes in the future.

i just invested in a car, everything seemed good except that every time i try to open the door, the alarm goes off. not sure if this is the car or just me being a retard, probably the latter

Sounds like you should let your folks help you out and see what happens. Sometimes the law is on your side but it is just too expensive to prove it. If your parents run into a dead end then don't be surprised if they don't want to pay to go through the legal process. If you can drive your car for 6 months then you probably got your money out of it. I wouldn't dump any more money into it if you can avoid it but you might need to fix the drivers seat so it isn't a death trap.

HA! Interns, am I right?

Next time you buy a used car that doesn't come from a used car dealership, have the seller drive it to a REAL mechanic that you know and trust. Let him/her poke around in there for a while and only with their thumbs up do you buy it. And by him/her, I don't mean an intern. I mean the person who your parents have known for 10+ years and has done all the work on their cars since they arrived in the area and your mom bakes treats for them and the other employees around the holidays. Get someone you really trust to look at it.

Why the fuck did you buy it? If you asked everything that was wrong with it and he showed up and the fucking doors didn't work, the windshield was cracked, it smelled horrible and everything was fucked.

Where the hell did you find this guy. For future reference there is more than 1 car out there.

Not saying people don't get dicked over on cars all the time and it's not easy to have happen, but you said this guy lied about everything being fucked, and everything was blatantly fucked.

Idk. Shitty situation but hopefully you learned from it for the future.

Sell it for anything you can get and try and find a deal from somebody on something. You could probably get like 500 back out of it maybe.

Idk. You could get a much better car for 6 or 700 but you might want to spend a little more again but find something decent. Check CL. There are a ton of cars on there. Bring a mechanically inclined friend with you or drive it to a shop and have them look it over.

IF somebody says everything is cool and the doors don't work, everything else is fucked, and it smells like dead people walk away.

Lot's of cars out there. Better luck next time.

Maybe your friend needs a new career path or is he a mechanic that only works with legos?

I still feel like this thread is total nans because nobody does that. But I'll keep eating my popcorn and waiting for some deetz to prove its real

If this is legit, then you're a butthead for making this purchase...

...but lucky for you, you can't legally purchase a car without a consenting adult. Take dude to court and get your money back. Yay being a minor.

Sure he can buy it. he just cant get the title transfrered to him without the adult. Kids purchase gum, clothes, skis all the time. A car is just a hunk of metal... until he gets the paperwork done and is able to drive it.

That mechanic intern... is he like an intern with the school auto shop... as in he took and got a C in autoshop and now is the TA for the autoshop teacher?
