Car problem....help?

alright so i have a 98 subaru impreza wagon. Starting 2 days ago it would turn on, engine starts up fine, then after like 7 seconds the engine shudders and it shuts off, even if i rev it up. The basics are fine like oil and coolant, I cant find any messed up tubes. The check engine light is on. Im not really the car master so does anyone have any ideas? Ill prolly take it tomorrow to get it looked at.
 
If the check engine light is on the best thing to do is take it to a shop, just so they can plug it in and figure out what the error is. Then if its something simple, fix it yourself.
 
i gotta get it towed tho.....lame. well thanks for the help, i was thinking it was along the lines of somethin with fuel not gettin to it.
 
sry man and o2 sensor would cause your car to run rough due to the incorrect air/gas mix. it could cause it to stall. there are many things. fuel pump, clogged cat, pcv could be unplugged. spark plugs.
 
the same thing happened to my subaru 2.2 litre and like everyone's saying...probably something w/ fuel. mine was the fuel filter needed to be replaced. good luck w/ it homie.
 
could be a fuel filter also, maybe injectors are clogged, maybe your plugs are dirty, i dunno
 
that happened to my lawnmower. it was the carburetor. but i doubt your car even has a carburetor being a 98. if i had to guess i'd say something in the fuel system is messed up
 
Fuel system or ignition system. If it starts strong it could be a computer problem.

If you dont know anything about cars get ready to get ass fucked for a possible simple fix.

How hard are fuel pumps on subaru's?
 
well to get to fuel pump i gotta take off the exhaust and drivetrain, so thats a big job. I went to take a look at the fuel filter but i guess its all a single unit on this model, as in you cant take the case apart to get to the filter, you just buy a new case which has the filter inside. So I guess ill take it to a guy i know tomorrow and hopefully not get raped
 
Fuel filters are cheap and ridiculously easy to replace on Subarus, so you could try that if you think it's the problem. I really doubt it's the O2 sensor, but don't rule that possibility out. With the description you've given it could be one of many different things, so the best thing to do would get your car hooked up to a diagnostic tool and see what's going on. Get a friend that owns one to do it if possible, because shops charge a lot just to hook it up and tell you what may be wrong.
 
I think Checkers offers this kind of thing for free. I remember going in there once and they hooked up some sort of small computer to check a bunch of shit, and then printed out a report.
