Car opinions: STI hatch, GTI, Tc

So I'm looking to buy a new car sometime in the near future and these are three options that I have been most interested in. I have done some research already about all three, but I am genuinely curious about your opinions on these cars as I'm sure some of you own them. I have the opportunity to acquire any of the three and here they are for quick reference:

Subaru Impreza WRX STi Hatchback

Volkswagen Golf GTI

Scion Tc coupe or hatchback

Thanks for any opinions and help you can offer!

STI and GTI are both very fun to drive, but the STI with the AWD is unbeatable. You won't be disappointed with either, but if you're looking at hot hatches look at the VW Golf R. With the R you get AWD, 79 more ponies, and better interior. Also, the STI and Golf R are pretty similar and both are awesome cars.

Lastly, don't get the Scion. You will much happier with the STI or Golf R

How could you even consider a TC in that mix? Such a piece of crap. Go and test drive the other 2 completely different cars

Go test drive for the sti or golf R and decide for yourself rather than listening to 12 year olds on the internet.

There's only one correct answer:

this site is one of the few places where you could offer someone their choice of any brand new car, or a 1997 Subaru with 220,000 miles on it...and NS would still encourage you to get the Subaru.

The reason I was interested in the Tc was I like the body style and it's got a lot of mod options. Plus it's not too bad on milage. That being said it definitely is my plan C option considering the other options I have been looking at.

Do NOT get the scion. It is a plastic piece of crap. mod options should never be the reason you buy a car. the STI will hold its value a lot longer, followed by the GTI/ Golf R. I have had two subarus (WRX and Legacy GT) and both have saved my life more than once.

The STi has a bombproof gearbox. the only thing you have to worry about with the STI is ring land failure, but if your not stupid with your driving and not just bolting on huge turbos, you will be fine. and typical running costs are pretty low.

I like the Golf R a lot too, but it is a little slower and more expensive to fix, as it is german. It s certainly more quiet than the subie or evo (main competitors), though.

The GTI is an ok (at best ski car. it is FWD which is better than a rear driver in the snow, and they will be cheaper to buy than the subaru.

Again, do NOT buy a scion. if you do, I will personally force you to switch to snowboarding.

instead of a scion TC you should be comparing the STI BRZ

as stupid as the scion TC is, you think he should be considering a four seater, RWD car as a ski a car???? I'm sorry, but that is really foolish...

To be fair, he never said the words "ski car."

Also it's hilarious that the letters "TC" pop up in your icon while you lay into the Scion TC. Just lulz.

hahah, right? those a re my initials, and once upon a time I wanted a scion tC for that very reason.

And yes, my apologies to all. But, in my defenses, when someone asks for car opinions on SKIING based forum, one would think that the intended use of the car is for... *holds breath* ... Skiing... YAY!!

If you are anywhere near snow do not get a RWD car. It's like shooting yourself in the foot.

On a side note the STI BRZ is flat out stupid. You don't get any more power, you just get a body kit that brings the coefficient of drag down from 0.28 to 0.27. So not exactly functional. However, if you just want a cheap RWD sports car to go drifting in, there's not really a better choice than the BRZ.

STI is a waste. Youre essentially paying for a shiny red badge and some more design trinkets. If youre going to go the Subaru route, get the WRX. Do your own homework on the two cars and you'll see why I'm right.

Weird, OP must have PMed you guys and said that he specifically wants a ski car for the winter because he says that no where

As a daily driver? Yes, you won't notice a difference driving around town. If you ever take it to the track the STI will pay off. 305 hp vs 268 hp and 290 lb.-ft vs 258 lb.-ft torque, better suspension, body upgrades, and the cool STi badge. The STi also has the 2.5 litre turbo engine unlike the WRX with only the 2.0 litre turbo.

Again is it worth it for strictly daily driving? No. But if you ever want to take it to the track and if you have the extra cash why not get the STi?

Yeah when I worked for VW there were some questionable things with the options you could get on the car, but whenever you drove it, the car was so much fun.

Mr. Jack Wagon,

I also retracted my "ski car" specific statement, but again, why would he ask this question on ski site? Would a recommendation based on the fact that he is probably gonna be using this car to ski not relevant?

Reason I said anything about the BRZ is because A it is not comparable to the STI and B it is all around not a practical car, where as the STI Hatch and GTI/Golf R both are really very practical for any day or any season or sport.

Thank you,

Mr. Tom Cooke

^^Furthermore, the OP lives in Montana. Tell me how he should be looking at something like BRZ in a place that, correct me if I am wrong, is not exactly known for it's hot, dry weather and long summers...

Or learn how to drive?

I've driven 2wd trucks and my 92' Mercedes e300 (rwd) through many Canadian winters without any problems. If you aren't an idiot and have winter tires you can drive almost anything in almost all conditions and you'll be okay.

If you are in Alberta like your profile says so, then yeah you could get away with 2WD vehicles because it is generally a very flat area. If you have any kind of hills or mountains no matter what kind of tires you have, in a RWD car you're going to have a bad time.

HA the TC does not have mod potential. Modding one of those is like modding a fucking civic hatch. If anything the Scion is the only car in the bunch without mod potential.

I'm not entirely sure how you picked these cars to compare though... STI is more comparable to Golf R, GTI is more comparable to WRX and a TC is more comparable to a Civic.

This is usually where you give specifics about the bad things...

Also- "things about is that where pretty dumb," What in gods name is wrong with you? Can you not put together a coherent sentence?

I think you underestimate the challenge of prairie winters in Canada (these are all from 2013 in Saskatchewan which is flatter than Alberta)...

I never said Canada didn't get a lot of snow. I get a lot of snow here in Montana too. And yes, if there is a ten foot snow drift in front of you nothing will drive through it. I have also lived on the east coast where it is very hilly. All I am saying is that it is much easier to drive any car in the snow when it is flat than when there are hills. It is a very different story.

You will not be disappointed with the STI or GTI, but it is definitely worth checking out both the Golf R and WRX. The AWD in the Subies make them my choice right out of the gate, not to mention an STI will feel stiffer and has more horses and the glorious boxer rumble. If you like getting your hands dirty, there is an unbelievable selection of aftermarket parts for either one. If you want a truly fun, sporty-feeling car from the factory that will take you to the hill with all of your stuff, I'd say go with an STI if you have the cash.

I have an 03 5 speed gti and boy is it the bees Nees. So much fun to drive and sounds nice with the turbo. If your going with a ski car go with one of the options with awd unless the trip to the ski hill is easy. But whatever do go for the manual option, only way to go in those cars and most possible fun. But to be correct I believe both the golf r and sti have DCT and although they are faster shifting it's not as fun as jammin the gears Manually

STi's only come in 6-speed manual, and I am not sure about the R. The GTI if you get the 4-door, you have to get the DSG (this could have changed, this is just what it was when I worked at a dealer a few years back).

Mk6 Golf R comes in a 6 speed manual only. Mk5 R32 was DSG only (at least in the states).

oh and if you are wonder whats wrong with me im dyslectic and if you think theres something wrong with me because i dont excel in school or written language then your right because a large portion of some worlds most sucsessful people have it or some sort of learning disability that affects them in some way. so maybe theres something wrong with you and not me
