What do you (people outside the UK) pay in terms of car insurance for a first time driver? Here (england) we basically get clusterfucked by the insurance companies until we've been driving for a good few years. Someone i know ended up paying £3600 ($5700) for a years comprehensive insurance on a Vauxhall corsa 1.2, a tiny engined 3 door hatchback that was almost 10 years old.

Get good grades or hit 25 years old, thats how your rates are going down.
 
if you're on your parents plan and have decent grades.. you can easily get it at 60 or 75 a month..

after my tickets on my record, still on my dads plan, it was 140 a month..

a couple of those tickets dropped off, i got my own plan through AAA, and its 80 bucks a month and i'm 21..

it also depends on your car you drive, how safe it is, if its a sports car, etc. your record, and age, if you have kids, if you're married, etc.. there's a lot of things they take into account
 
In NZ i was going to have to pay $1700 for full coverage from the only insurance company that would insure me (never crashed before, just due to the fact i'm 16 and my type of car is among the top ten most stolen in NZ) sooo i opted for 3rd party +fire and theft and it still costs me $700 a year.
 
Yeah that's true but for me when i don't have that much money anyway haha, takes a good bite out of my wallet.
 
not too sure about other countries, but discussing car insurance in the US is basically pointless. too many variables, you could pay $300 per month in one state and pay $100 per month in another...prices even vary greatly by county.

but what the hell, i pay ~$150 per month for a "sports car" (mazdaspeed 3) that is still under my dads insurance, and i'm 20.
 
I'm 23, drive a 2011 outback, and pay $1,240 a year. I've been with the same company since I was 16 (on parents plan from 16 to 22 and have been on my own since).
 
Fair enough. I'm 16 as well and I'm able to drive by myself in october. I'm probably gonna have to pay minimum $1900 for insurance on a civic or something like that. It sucks, but whatever.
 
i heard they are lowering it to 21 next year

i also heard they are no longer offering coverage for asians or women. asian women are now being eradicated all together.
 
Yikes, it sucks to be young! I pay $800/yr for full coverage on my 4motion Passat, my old jeep was $700/yr. I cannot wait to see what it goes down to when I hit 25 in two months!
 
car insurance is crazy. yes the companies raise rates but its to protect profits from rising repair and parts costs. I hate car insurance rates as much as the next guy but after working in an automotive repair industry i have a much more rational understanding of why the rates on certain cars are relatively high. I can tell you some cars get damaged more than others. Im not here to speculate but for some reason the cars that kids want to drive that have higher insurance rates tend to have more claims on them. Also u factor that with parts availability for some of these cars we all have/want. WRX, golf gti, u name it. The parts are harder to find than your grandmas chevy impala which inherantly makes them more expensive to repair bc repair facilities have to use new parts instead of used parts simply because they arent at salvage yards. So the combination of the statistics on how age correlates with accident propencity, statistical data on which cars get into accidents, and availabilty of parts, it isnt difficult to see that the rates SHOULD be higher for these scenerios. I have had my share of expensive car insurance vehicles (mustang cobra, 72 stingray, WRX) so i can relate to everybodies hate. But i made claims on two of those vehicles and neither of the claims was as a result of an accident caused by someone else. I hit a tree and my car was vandelized. Bottom line just find a way around it (put it in ur rents name, or buy something else) till you can afford the insurance or you become a less risky driver.
 
We get to drive when we are 14 in south Dakota...lots of money for a 14 yr old haha we are turning 16 this year and my friend has wrecked 2 cars thinking he is a pro drifter...his dad is a insurance agent though so he gets mega discounts anyway haha
