I agree that cars are made to be driven but obviously the fact that a 250GTO sells for $50m+ reflects that sitting and ogling over cars is a very real purpose for some collectors. Cars worth preserving and restoring will still be around in 1000 years in museums.

Seeing as humanity can't keep track of Da Vincis 450m Salvador Mundi not even 6 months after it's sale - I'm not so sure about the 1925 Jonckheere coupe RR

You have a lot of faith in humanity thinking that our museums are going to be around in 1000 years, more than I do anyway.

Bitcoin, just lease and think of the car as an appliance. It's easier than ownership and only marginally more expensive these days on cars with decent residuals.

my cars in order of ownership

1987 celica gts ( first car(very attached to her))

1991 audi QC ( it had been rallied before i bought it, I rallied that shit too lmao )

1995 mercedes w124 wagon ( factory clean bought it mad cheap and flipped it for a decent profit )

and as of three days ago I copped myself a new daily finally letting the old girl rest :(

however its a fucing sick 03 v6 4x4 tacoma its the tits

I constantly question my decision not getting an Evo and going new WRX instead. It’s our daily so I’m sure stuff breaks far less on a new Subaru than old Mitsu but always just gotta wonder...

Die hard VAG guy (VW, Audi and Porsche). Currently driving a boosted MK5 Jetta that I’m planning on going stage 2 with. Not sure if APR or Unitronic.

Miss my MK4 GTI a ton but I totaled it. Really want a blue MK4 R32 next but they’re hard to find unmolested for a fair price. Maybe I’ll go B5 S4 instead but those are money pits.

Also a big JDM guy but I can’t justify buying something like an S-Chassis, JZX100 or RX-7. If I was rich I would but I can’t waste money on something I’d hardly drive.

My dream cars are mainly high end Porsches, especially air cooled ones like Singers and RWBs. Non-air cooled would be a GT2 or GT3 RS.

My pride and joy is my '87 Ford Ranger. Built 302 swapped, soon to have it's 12 point cage put in, 12in wide wheels front and back. Should handle like its on rails. Looking at a 408 next year for it.

Also have my halfway swapped 12a rotary swapped '79 MG Midget. She'll be done late this summer, Going to have an aggresive street port.

After messing around with both extensively, I think the Evo is by far better in the performance arena. When it comes to everything about reliability and daily drive-ability, I would give that to a stock scoob. I've had some minor issues with mine, but I'm also in the Evo FB groups and they're honestly hard to look at. As much as I can believe it, I kinda find it hard to believe that a majority of these dudes are idiots who throw insane mods on 4B11Ts and nuke them. If you want some interesting reads though, I suggest Evolution Owners and Evo X Underground. There are at a MINIMUM 3 people a week with blown engines and 100 comments of "shouldn't have run Cobb OTS maps" and "Part out?!?".

Just upgraded from a 2000 3.5 Acura RL to this beast. Stock 2003 GX 470 with a 2 inch lift and full arb ome suspension. 160 thousand on the odo, but she purrs and has been very well maintained. Just got her new shoes as well. Plan on doing some heavy maintainence soon and getting it back to almost new. Look foward to building a platform in the back as well for sleeping. Made a thread on this before but would love any input on the 2UZ FE if anyonr has any.

I don’t f’k around with OTS tunes and I don’t fuck with stuff before I send logs to tuner for the ok to go hard. It’s like the N5x community, it’s not the motor that I worry about (I’ve never blown a motor in my life), but everything else. When you try to daily a racecar you can’t have stupid shit going on like pumps (bimmer issue), radios goin out, transmissions (seen a LOT of Evos with blown trannys/transfer cases), so sure the motor itself can be stout but everything else..

How stupid of an idea is it to get a manual car without having driven manual before? Could I even drive it home?

Deciding between mazda3 hatch or impreza hatch. With no automatic transmission I feel like it could last forever. This will be my first real car purchase, current whip has 209k on it and is getting too expensive to keep repairing. Already took the drive shaft out instead of fixing the AWD

Thats the only way bro, I literally bought my first standard in high school without knowing how to drive one and said fuck it.. got my buddy to drive it from the dealer and I was driving around town in just a few hours of practice... don't worry about it best way to learn is throw yourself into it.

Thanks man! I live down in San Diego and there is alot to choose from especially if you are willing to drive a little and scour craigslist and autotrader. If you are looking into 4 runners or Land Cruisers definitely check out the LX and GX models as they are the exact same car, and very similarly priced on the used market.

Yea I had a lifted 93 4Runner waay back, I’m from Canada so we got salt and not too many. I loved the Lexus, they go for like 10-12k if you can find one here in good condition. Defiantly the ultimate off-road platform. Turbo diesel swap would be insane !

Damn I wasnt even thinking that far down the line yet, but you just gave me a great idea for when my engine finally needs a swap.

That's how I did it. I bought the car through a dealer and the salesman taught me how to drive a manual in the back parking lot basically at closing time.

Sink or swim!

Might be a good idea to bring a buddy along that can test drive the car and then give you some pointers on your way home. I'm sure there are how to videos online for first time manual transmission driving just to give you the basics.

Fuck ya bud. 1996 850 Turbo. Almost the GOAT sleeper. Way to much money to keep her running, so I'm selling her right now. If you are in Ontario and want a Vo, hmu. Gonna try and snag a turbo 240 before the prices go through the roof. What do you drive?

My guy! Those are so badass. The old ads for the wagons said "until Ferrari makes a wagon, this is it". I drive a 1993 240. Not fast, not sexy but it has all the charm and all the space.

Currently own 2010 Audi A4 avant and a 1997 Lexus LX450. Looking to buy a 4wd car that can handle high mileage because I drive 3 hours to NH every weekend, and as well as I like the handling on snowy roads, I'd like to keep the audi for a long time for my 10 minute commute to my actual job. The Lexus is at 277k on the odometer, and at this point it just serves as a dump and beach car. Might buy a kit off roader frame and swap the 1fz-fe motor over from the lexus because it still runs great with no issue, and would be pretty fun with a six speed from the diesel variant and add forced induction.

Yew!!! Lexus club baby. Good to hear nice things about an LX, just got a GX with 160k and hoping to get at least 300k out of it

Yeah the engine will sure get there. Make sure you get your undercarrige protected with either oil or some surface protectant. I’m confident that aside from frame rust, my LX would make it to 600k

240s are the goat wagon. Really love the 850s tho. Dream garage would probably be an 850 R AWD wagon, and a 240 Turbo sedan.

Yeah dude! I would love one of the AWD 850's. I had a 1990 740 turbo for a little bit and that car had some more balls and was hella sleek

There's an old dude who drives a gold 740 turbo wagon that drives past my work every day. Absolutely mint car too.

Are those the famous “redblock” Volvos?

My moms best friend we used to go on fam ski trips with has/had a Volvo as the family car. This was way back in the 90s too so makes sense they loved it. They’re pretty much the classiest people I know (they’re doctors, most of their kids are doctors now..) and ever since visioned Volvo as the classiest car that people drive. Too many people drive Merc, BMW and Audis as a status symbol that the brand gets tarnished and becomes trashy. The unassuming people with big wealth tend to Volvos more, and those things ain’t cheap! Unfortunately the newer Volvos seem to be just as unreliable as their German counterparts. But I heard they’re sending the manufacturing or design back to Scandinavia than China or whoever (had a big Volvo car conversation when I saw that family for the first time in like 15 years at my grandfather’s funeral). They said they finally sold that old Volvo not long ago and the buyer kept offering more than they were asking they thought he was nuts paying so much for a 25 year old car with 300k+ or whatever miles on it but he kept insisting

I know man! Volvos rock. I am pretty sure the Volvo B200 family (reblock) engines were in all sorts of models throughout 1974-1998,.

The wealthiest people I know drive 90s Volvo wagons. You wouldn’t know it but they’re billionaires.

Go test drive some cheaper used cars that are manual and explain to the salesperson that you haven't driven a manual but really want to buy one and learn. They will help you learn but it might be in a cheaper shittier vehicle. A lot of the time they will do it in the vehicle you are looking at.
