I drive a 2003 Jetta. I am looking to get a new receiver and speakers. What's the best stuff without spending too much, I have been looking around but I am unsure of the quality and what will fit my car easily
 
Rap/rock, basically anything besides country. Why does this matter? Yes I want a lot of bass but it doesn't have to be crazy
 
music matters. for clarity. I'd check out kicker or infinity for speakers. if your looking for amps kicker makes some good decently priced amps.
 
^^ what these guys said. And depending on how aggressive of a setup you want and what your car has, you might need to invest in an amp.
 
okay so... My car is completely stock and has the stock monsoon system in it. I just want something a bit better, I will spend a bit but I don't want to go crazy. I also want to keep it simple and use as few converters and adapters as possible. What do I do?
 
my best suggestion is to go check out best buy and see what they have for open box equipment. majority of the time if you buy all your stuff open box they can throw some deals your way. thats what I did anyway. other than that check out whats on craigslist in your area. just make sure you get the proper sized speakers which you'll be able to find the proper size on metra online. for a deck I would go with either JVC pioneer or kenwood. sony is ok, but I'd stick with those three. If you're really only gonna be listening to CD's alpine makes a decent car deck.
 
forgot to add MTX makes some decent stuff.

on an added note kicker amps when you buy them factory fresh you get a certificate of what its rated for in watts. Its always a little bit more than what it says it is on the box. plus the whole amp is its own heat sink so it wont ever get too hot.
 
Get the cheapest head unit you can find that will navigate your music fairly easy and more importantly has enough preamp outs to hook up a 4 channel amp and a mono. If you don't have much money, you should buy good speakers and run them off the stock amp until you can afford to amp the speakers.

some people will put in a sub before they amp their good speakers. It's exciting to have that bass, but it will get old fast. you wont regret amping your speakers first. No matter what you do don't run a sub on stock speakers. It will sound like shit.

After that you can buy one or two subs. Depending on the music you listen to will help you decide your sub. I have had dual 10's, and a single 12 with a matching one that I put in when there was room. The 12's were awesome, but once I did some soundproofing I actually liked the 10's more.

Also soundproofing your car will make a HUGE difference, but only do this if you have a car that you plan to keep for awhile.

Finally. Make sure you get quick connections for your sub. I had a setup with a 2000w mono attached to the box of the one 12". Then I could take the whole thing out with just one plug. To add the second sub I had a quick connect on the speaker wires. It was awesome. This is of course if you have a car and plan to use the back/trunk or whatever.

 
pioneer and rockford fosgate are both good brands and you can get could speakers for pretty cheap on amazon
