actually i dont find it bullshit seeing how both my parents came from poor ass families and now my dad makes $120,000 a year. just because your pessimistic doesnt mean its not possible for other people. do u think that people are born CEOs of companies? they have to work their way up in order to become that powerful. It just takes a certain kind of person to do that.

a lot of people are born into being a CEO. But those are the people that make the company fail. Its very possible to go from poor to rich. Just depends on how hard you work.

My dad's mother was a sharecropper. He's now retired with timeshares all over the world. But I suppose that's just another 'Republican lie?' Geez... My mom and my two aunts grew up in a two room shack. Now all of them have Mercedes and nothing less than a Master's degree (one aunt is the assitant dean of engineering at Howard U and is getting ready to trade in one of her TWO Mercedes for a Jag Vanden Plas). the american dream has been around since before there were democrats and republicans. and yes, it basically is capitalism. you wouldn't be able to have the 'american dream' without capitalism. and fuck, tons of people still go from poor families, or even, come to the states as an immigrant with basically nothing and succeed (their definition of success may be different, it may only be owning their own house), but fuck, thats why so many people love the states, because these things do happen.

i think the american dream as we know it survives because of capitalism. neither is really a prerequisite for the other, yet in the absence of one, the other would suffer immensely.
no american dream, (be it greed, or just a desire to be 'comfortable') capitalism might suffer. no capitalism, (replaced maybe by socialism) the american dream would most definitely suffer. sooo, as we can see.. between the two definitely exists a dichotomy.
