Capital punishment debate

For one of my class, my test is a graded debate. If anyone knows any legit facts about why capital punishment is illegal or should be, your help would be appriciated. I have to say that it should be outlawed and I have no clue how to debate. So far the ones that have already been done the people just pulled out condititutional clauses and supreme court cases.

International Human Rights say that everyone has the right to life, people are wrongfully executed, where they found out they were innocent after they died, there is 2 reasons to get you started

Well you can deffintly use the "right to live" thing but im the wrong person to ask. When I did this debate a a few years back I was pro-capital punishment. If you switch to that side I can deffinatly help you out. I won that debate faster then a fat person eats a cholate bar

Amnesty International considers capital punishment wrong. penn and teller's bullshit did a whole epi on it.

watch that.

If society says killing is wrong and a killer has to be punished then when society kills shouldent society be punished?

ya the penn and teller show was great.

In my opinion, CP should be totally legal. Some people don't deserve to be alive because they are too extreme. Some people are seriously crazy and leaving them alive is a threat to everyone else. If you murdered another person out of cold blood, why should u deserve to live?

Im pro-capitol punishment!!!! Some peope deserve to die for the crimes they commit. Do you realize it cost's about $150 a day for every single inmate in prison in our country. Thats so much fucking money that could be going towards things that would help the country. This is just an estimate...Last june there were 2,186,230 people in federal, state or local jails. At $150 a day for all these fucks it would cost tax payers $327,934,500.00 a day!!!

And in a year this is how much us tax payers pay for prisoners...$119,696,092,500.00. Thats a lot of fucking money...some of these fucks, like the murderers and child molesters should just be killed right away, crazy fucks!!!

Ok so then when society decides to kill this person isnt that the most premeditated cold blood situation possible. So shouldent society then be killed?

thats a horrible reason...how many prisoners do you plan on executing?      solutions for this would be easing laws on minor drugs...aka mary jane. and/or developing  more and better criminal rehabilitation centres.  not offing the entire prison community.

you numbers are way the fuck off

Keep in mind a program like this already exist is is called "WII" or the War In Iraq. Apparently it cost a lot more money to kill people oversees because bush has found a way to spend 600 billion a year.

Also it is a chunk of change to kill someone in the US too. You have multiple expensive trials which consume large ammounts of cash.

I wasnt necessarily saying kill all of them by any means. But some people dont deserve to live at all. But I totally agree that there needs to be a better rehab process to make sure these people dont commit crimes again. I would guess that a large percentage of people in prison are repeat offenders. Some things they need to be more harsh with, like murder and sex crimes. But when it comes to things like small drug charges and crap like that they laws should be a lot less harsh.

Actually my numbers are right! I have spoken with a cop about this before. It costs anywhere from $100-$200 a day minimum to keep people locked up. Think about it, to pay all of the guards, pay for gas, electric, water, food...etc. And I got the number of inmates from the dept. of Justice(http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/prisons.htm).

But I agree Bush is a BITCH and is spending even more money on things that we shouldnt

if you believe in abortion yuo HAVE to believe in capitol punishment.

they are the same thing.

ya it cost close to that but not all funding comes from the federal goverment and most prisons the inmates earn money for the prison by completing public works projects. It cost the us about 11 billion not 111 billion dollars a year to maintain a prison population. Still way the fuck too much.

We need an australia.

Ok so then when society decides to kill this person isnt that the most premeditated cold blood situation possible. So shouldent society then be killed?

So you dont think people should be punished for their actions? Sorry, but someone who commits a serious murder crime is worthless, they will never be of any use to anyone. They are better off dead for the sake of our race as a whole.

I dont think that they shouldent be punished and I dont know where you derived that from. This is modern society no Hammourbi's Code society cant kill. Im sorry but the only solution is incarseration and if that cost tax payers 200 billion dollars a year than thats what it cost.

very true...there is a lot of funding that comes from other places. But regadless whatever the correct amount is, it way too much!!!

I dont believe in abortion...that is murder for no reason. Capitol punishment is murder for a reason. Not only to punish them for what they did but also to protect the rest of society.

no, for every action there is an equal and opposit reaction.. if you take someones life, you have just lost your right to live... and whatyou're saying is just bull shit.. "shouldnt society be killed" thats like saying one person killed someone, then ok, well we'll take his life cause he took many or one persons life.. oh shit we took a persons life that was obviously troubled, and nothign can change a persons mind except themselves... so after they take his life, the society is liek wat a min we just took someones life, lets kill ourselves... if you ask me thats just plain stupid...

not to mention that murder being punished by death would cut down crime rate, make an example, and any person that values their own life would no longer kill people

ok that dosent work they have tried it numerous time around the world in fact the crime rate actually goes up and it breads an opressive violent goverment.

The quote "If killing is punishable by death then when society kills shouldent it be killed" or whatever I said is somthing to think about not to be taken literally. I have the overwhelming urge to just call you a stupid ass hole but insted I will just say maby read a book or watch a show on the subject before you start spouting off some neo-conn bull shit.

I totally agree with you on that, this is just the side I got for the debate. So far I have found a court case where they found CP illegal in the 80's but reversed the ruling 2 years later, and the 8th admendment which is just no cruel or unjust punishments is kinda saying that it's unjust.

The entire arguement about cost is pretty much moot, if not actually in your favor.

It's somewhat controversial, but it costs just as much, if not more, to apply the death penalty as it does to imprison someone for life.

As the person above me said, capital punishment does nothing for the crime rate, and has in some instances made it worse.

Another very good arguement is to talk about how the execution of legally retarded people is legal in 25 states. It's hard not to feel bad when you hear about one man in texas who couldn't even understand that he was being executed, and saved half of his last meal "for later." This website has some other info on similar cases. http://www.fdp.dk/uk/ment.php

Most studies done on the subject show this to be untrue.

On average, capitol punishment costs about 25% more than life imprisonment.

As far as I'm concerned, who are we to decide who lives and dies? In the long run, killing is unethical, regardless of the circumstances. If someone is too dangerous to be on the streets, prison is a completely legitimate option.

Finally, somebody that actually has their facts straight! I did a research paper against capital punishment in high school, and there really is no way you can lose an argument against it. There are just so many flaws in the system that it's a wonder it still exists, even though it is in America. Another argument for it is that life imprisonment is a lot better punishment than an execution--nobody wants to live in prison the rest of their life. You should also look into the chemicals used to perform the execution, especially pancurium bromide. Using death as a deterrant (a failing one, at that) to crime in this day and age is insanely primitive, and there is no logical reason to continue doing so.

^ Yea I was reading how the first drug makes you unconsisous, the second paralizes you, and the third just causes your bodliy organs to stop working. But in a lot of causes there isnt enough of the first chemical so the person goes paralized and feels all the pain, but isnt able to move or communicate in anyway the pain they feel as they die.
