Cap vs. Sidewall, which side are you on

any cap ski i have had has snapped, and sidewall has not. also sidewall just seems like a better concept when you think about it. sidewall all the way

 
I'm on capped lines. I personally care whether it's capped or sidewall. I have never noticed enough of a difference in feel. In addition, the only ski I ever snapped was a sidewall and not a cap. So I'm the wierdo.

 
Cap is less expensive to manufacture.

Sidewall construction is supposed to be more damp, which results in less chatter and more control.

 
you really can make generalizations. every company does their stuff a little bit differntly. and its all very good stuff. in the past, capped skis were generally for less agressive skiers, but you really cant say that today. dont wory bout how the sides are applied, it is all concidered when comming up with the ski, so the construction style is chosen for the preformace charcteristics of the ski. its all good, so dont worry.

ive never ridden a ski with sidewall constuction. but ive always ridden line which are capped and theve been great so idk.

capped is where the topsheet comes down over the sides and meets with the edges. just look at lines and you'll see what i mean.

you can't say capped is better then sidewalls or vice versa because they both are good manufacturing methods. it just depends on how well they are made. so just because you've snapped some capped skis doesn't make them weaker than a sidewall ski. it just means that particular manufacturer sucks.

personally i like sidewall skis simply for their looks. plus they're easier to make.

 
cap was created by salomon as a cheaper, easier way to make skis. Unfortunatley cap delams easy and looks like ass compared to sidewall.

for a park ski that buttery ill take a cap but if i want a more pipe/ all mtn ski id go w/ sidewall

cap for park bec it is ussally softer so you can do butters, but thats what i like in a park ski.

cap for pipe bec i like the more solid and a bit stiffer so if i land back i can ride it out,

thats just my preference, depends on the person

i have ridden both and havn't noticed a significant difference.

i've tried both and didn't notice and bit of difference due to the sidewall being abs or ptex vs cap.

i ride 2 pairs of caped skis now, my chronics have a more of a dramatic angle in the cap where it goes to sidewall area (i guess thats what you call it on a cap) and they take damage easyer from my skis crossing, then my moships that have a super rounded cap design, i don't know if side wall construted skis have the same problems in that since, but really other then a ABS or Ptex side wall is just easyer to fix i don't think there is much of a difference in how the ski rides.

I'm a big fan of line so I'd like to say that cap skis are great, but sidewall is the best. That's why Line is trying it with the Elizebeth. They know that thier cheap skis won't cut it in the future with Armada getting so good. Everyone knows that the only reason companies use cap is to make more money since it is so cheap.

What the fuck? Either you meant to say sidewall for one of those or you just contradicted yourself.

Furthermore cap has absolutley nothing to do with the flex of the ski, as you can see when you look at a fujative and a bandit. The fujative is a rediculously soft ski, and the bandit is rediculously stiff, both are cap. Same goes for sidewall.

i personally prefer sidewall because i've had two pairs of capped skis delam on me. anyways...it really depends on the manafacturing, the rider, and the terrain. each ski is different, each rider is different, and all terrain different so it's up to you to decide whether or not you choose sidewall or capped.

Just to add something to the mix, my capped 1080s had no delamming issues for 2 seasons and I use them for rails now with still no problems. On the other had my STLs are already having issues with the sidewall separating from the base after about 3/4 of a season. I'm not saying cap is better, but if it lasts, it lasts.

I really like my chronics, which are capped, and my 1080s served me very well, which are also capped. But i did snap a pair of Liberty Stealths on the 3rd day, which are capped. So i think the durability is not the question, I think the biggest thing is whether or not the manufacturer knows how to make the skis right. Which Liberty does not. They suck.

Sidewall 100%. Better edge hold on hard snow and tons more durability. But park skiers aren't worried to much about edge hold, (rails take that out of the picture), So durability is key.

i love the look and feel of side wall i trhink its prolly the better way to go but as for as im concerned the caped is fine works and ive never had a problem with it i think all the delaminating problems are with the heat that you wax skis at if its hot hot it will fuck up
