Can't decide on which pair of skis

Hey, this is my first post, I'm having a hard time deciding which pair I should get.

First, an intro. I've been skiing since 4 (I'm 20 now), but I just got back into skiing after 4 years without. Back then I only did groomers, blues/blacks and whatnot, but now I'd like to try a bit of everything (park, powder, anything). This season I had to ski on my brother's planks cause mine were juniors from way back. I pushed those quite hard, they were unstable, kept chattering and trying to overturn me when I was going through the crud.

I ski quite hard, pretty small at 5'6" 120lbs.

Here's the dilemma: I originally wanted to get the 2009 4frnt MSP's through the college deal, which should cost me around $420, but since I'm getting all new gear for next season, I'd like to keep the costs down. The alternative right now is the Line Prophet 90s. I've found a deal for a 165cm, which should be about $100 cheaper than the 172cm. I know twins ski shorter than traditional skis because of the tail, so something longer would be best...guh my brains are turning into juice just by thinking about this.

Please advise.

Hey welcome to NS

Heres my advice for you, take everything that is said on here with a grain of salt. a lot of kids will recomend product with out everhaving skied it.

that said, the majority of new skis are really good, and you can get a pretty dang good at some online retailers moving new old stock skis. id check out

evogear.com sierrasnowboard.com or backcountry.com

as far as the line prophet 90's are concerned, i really liked them, i only got a few runs skiing minnesota hardpack and they held an edge really well. the only thing i didnt like and you recognized this in your post is that the ski skis short. that said, the 172 should be a pretty good length for you.

if you have any other questions feel free to pm me.

cheers

Tim

if your looking for 4frnts, check maybe 2007 4frnts, I ride 2006-2007 MSP 181s, they are stiff but can rip through anything. The graphic is pretty dope too. Hope this helps bro, and yes welcome NS

I know Liberty's get a lot of hate on this site for past errors but they've changed themselves up quite a bit and now make a really quality product. If you're looking for new skis check out the hazmats or the phil larosse pro model. They're both real solid skis. If you don't care if the skis are a little older (but still new) check out the KGB's...I have a pair of them and I really love them, they're mad poppy and hold an edge real well when charging hard plus they're an 85 mm waist which floats pretty well in all the but the crazy deep. Good luck.

If your looking to get all new stuff, the Prophets would be a better choice because of the price differance. Another you might consider would be the Blends, same geometry (I think) as the 90 but a little more balenced as an all around ski (i.e. all mountain/park/BC to an extent). I've only skied the MSP for a few runs, I traded a friend who rode my lizzies for the day. Pretty gnar ski (MSP that is) but I can't give an honest review because I prefer a soft ski. And from what I've heard the MSP is one of the more durable skis out there.

Oh yes and welcome to NS

if u are gonna be gittin the 4frnts get the 2008 model. they haven't changed anything, and i'm sure you could find them cheaper than the 09's.

i used to ride lines and i thought they held up pretty well although the topsheet did chip off alot, and after about a year and a half they delamed.

msp's shred. i absolutely love them. but i've broken two pairs. and 4frnt didn't do shit about replacing them. from what you've described, it sounds like you'd be a great candidate for some of the new blends from line. with their new construction and added width, they really truly destroy everything they touch. also, they're considerably cheaper than msp's and i believe they're cheaper than prophet 90's as well. good luck!

First-hand experience, I've used prophet 90's about 35 out of the 37 days I have skied this season. Took them out to Colorado for a few days into deep snow, they handled decently, but the waist is only 90. On groomers, they carve like an absolute motherfucker, really really stable at high speeds. On east coast ice, as long as your edges are tuned they hold an edge as good as anything I've ever skied. They aren't very flexible but I don't really mind that. I can take them through the park and slide rails and hit jumps almost as well as my park skis, and I love them. I would almost consider going wider for the 100, but the 90 does me just fine. I would definitely recommend buying them. Oh and I'm 5'10, about 155 lbs and I ride the 179's and they're easy to handle, to put things in perspective.

thanks for the input guys

i think i just might get the 165cm prophets, it seems like its a good deal, heh.

few questions before i pull the trigger

will these be too stiff for me at 120lbs?

and how much of a difference are twins compared to traditional skis? The old school ones i used to ski are 3-4 inches over my head, and now i'm getting something shorter than me, how's it gonna affect my skiing?

i can help u with your ski size

get something no shorter then 170 but not much bigger then 175 range since you sound pretty aggresive

I don't think they'll be too stiff at all, you seem to ski pretty aggressively...and if your last skis are that much over your head, why not get the 172 (if it even comes in a 172) ? You'll have no trouble handling those and it'd make you a better all-around skier. The last time I skied on regular skis was before I could remember, but if they were shaped skis it shouldn't be too big of a transition. Like I said before, these things can really carve well and hold an edge. You should be good.

So I've decided not to go with the 165 prophets; a deal isn't a deal if I'm gonna regret later on. 170+ it is, just a matter of which pair to get.

I'm probably gonna get the 2009 MSPs since most online shops don't have 170 MSP/Prophets anymore, any recommendations?

bumping because I dont wanna start a new thread...

Anyone tried/have the Icelantic Pilgrims in 169? They seem interesting, but it's hard finding reviews for them. Tried the searchbar, not that much info on these.

Thanks.
