Canon ZR 80

Okay I'm just getting into filming and editing and shit so I need a camera that will get me decient looking footage but not break the bank. This camera looks like it will work, it has the MiniDV feature and lots of other good stuff too. If you guys don't think it's good enough what other suggestions do you have?

And what would you recomend for editing, I can just download it easy so price isn't a case here. It needs to be user friendly and easy to use but I want to make some sweet shit on it. Oh and I have a computer with Windows ME that will be dedicated to only video editing, so storage and whatnot isn't a problem. Thanks guys, any help is great :)

if its digital it should be fine, and for editin program u prob wanna buy a good one, resonably priced of course

'i think i'll go with shouldabeen for the first name and abeejay for the middle name, reguardless of if its a boy or girl'-CameIToeJam on what he would name his kids

i hate ski patrolers

is the canon ZR 80 3CCD?

skiing should be like mcdonalds...sure they started out with just hamburgers, them they progressed to breakfest sandwiches and salads and mcflurries. we all love the new stuff, but we still love the old stuff as well. so its a good thing they still offer

Yo-ho Nick if you can "download... and I don't suggest it cause it's mean..." programs, get adobe premier, HUGE learning curve, but you can't top it

So adobe premier for editing even though it's tough to figure out?

Not what about for cameras, any other cameras that fit my specifications but not too expensive?

ZR 80's good, I have a lesser cannon and it's been great. Premier is unbeleivable just set aside a weekend for yourself to go through the menus and trial and error. You can do EVERYTHING you would want, now and in the future

How easy is it to put the footage onto your computer and then into the editing program. And what type of digital tape things does it use?

idk what the camera uses, but i love my sony w/ miniDV, works great. And i agree to get Premiere if you can. Its so awesome, i got it from a friend and couldnt be happier.

i forgot, make sure it has a firewire connection to the computer, so much faster and better quality than USB.

um, what kind of tape does it use? well if its got the "mini-dv" feature, that means the tape is mini-dv. its not a feature. its a format. as for imprting it to the computer, you just plug it in, and press import. not too hard to figure out.

premiere is a little more difficult to load video onto the computer, but its not that bad to figure out. Its definitely not as user friendly as some of the really simple programs, but its so much better once you spend a day or 2 getting used to it.

premier is really good to use, and all the basic editing steps are super easy to figure out

Okay, after reading reviews it says that the main disadvantage is that there is no USB... so how will I transfer my footy onto the comp? Someone said I need to buy some kind of FireWire, what's that do?

if there is no USB then... it must have firewire. firewire is somewhat like USB but much faster. theres also USB 2 that is much faster than USB 1 but not quite as fast as firewire i think.

prolly like 120, me and bob white (linesnowblades) hit it once and the same time and went so big out blades fell off!!!!!!! We were like shit our blades just fell off, thats not supposed to happen!!!! What a day.

I have the ZR65 and it’s awesome. I recommend getting some kind of wide angle lens for it. I have a 0.5X digital wide angle and it works really well. You can be 2 feet see the whole image perfectly, without the lens you don’t get the same type of footage. That lens will probably cost you a good $150-$200 on top of the camera.

As for the whole fire wire issue. I didn’t have a fire wire card in my computer or the cable when I bought the camera. It was kind of a piss off at first. I brought my computer in and got them to install a fire wire card and a bought the cable and it cost me about $150. Your computer most likely doesn’t have the card in it now but check. As for importing footage with the fire wire... it’s a very good speed.

Hope that helps, if you need anything else ask.

So just to sum it up this is what you guys are telling me:

-The camera is good for begginers like myself but a wide angle lens would be nice too.

-Get a FireWire card and cable for my computer.

-Adobe Premier for editing

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help :)

Canon ZR 80's are shit camcorders, they are 1 CCD, tiny, have limited ability for add-ons, and overall bad quality. Your not going to get good quality through a low end cam, you have to shell out for good quality.

Yes, it uses Firewire, thus you will need a card for your computer through PCI, make sure that you have room. And a cable. If you are going to shoot alot, you will need a large hard drive to store all your raw video because that takes up a lot of space.

Adobe Premiere for PC, Final Cut Pro for Mac.

Basicly all I want to know is, will this camera get me good looking footage. I want it to be clear and the camera seems to be excelent for the price. Canon is pretty much top of the line shit so my guess is that this cam is good quality. Please help me out here guys...

Yes, Canon's are excellent camera's, but when you are talking ZR 80 your talking the low end of their camcorders, meant to be economical rather than high performance. Optura's are a step up, I'd recommend one of those over a ZR. Or check out Panasonic's PV-GS line.
