Im considering geting the new canon t3i as my first dslr. Anyone heard any positive / negative things about the camera? Id mainly be filming/shooting skimboarding, longboarding, and time lapses.

+k for anyone with some good input

Get either the t2i or 60d. Basically the t3i is $200 more than the t2i and the only real difference is the swivel screen. I personally don't value a swivel screen at $200.

Alright, yeah the only reason i was looking at the 3i was for the swivel screen, it would be useful for shots on the beach.

The T3i has a way faster sensor for video, screen of corse, and also has zooming without manualy turning the lens, and has a new time laps setting. So for what your going to be doing the T3i is perfect. Just make sure to learn how to use all the manual settings for exposure, white balance, ect.. It will really make everything turn out better.

wtf dont listen to this moron. most of what he said was wrong. its the same god damm sensor as the t2i and 60D. dont just blurt out anything you think is right and make this guy buy the wrong camera

What does the t3i give you: a swivel screen, digital zoom and some soccer mom options.

digital zoom: is bullshit, It zooms in at minimum of 3 and goes to 10 and is suposed to be lossless= physycally impossible.

advantages of the t2i: cheaper, same video and photo. firmware update has fixed the audio... which is huge.

advantages of the 60D: for like 100 more than the t3i, you can get the flip screen, audio controls, and most importantly the magic ISO's. the less noisy of the ISO settings are available here and not in the t3i or the t2i.

Sorry I was thinking of the Lumix GH2 for some reason. I was talking to someone who has one like 10 min before I posted and was half asleep so I mixed the two together hahaha.

yeah but that means its loses pixels. it is impossible unless the actual lens elements move to resize and change the image

DIGITAL ZOOM IS BULL, OPTICAL ZOOM IS WHERE IT'S AT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously. You can digitally zoom 5,000x on your computer, if you so choose. It's going to do the same exact shit the camera is doing. I would never digitally zoom. Optical zoom, however, is the shit as it involves lenses and cool stuff like that! Optical zoom physically changes the image being projected onto the sensor. Digital zoom crops and enlarges.

Is the T3i really 18MP? I guess the megapixel war is still going strong. Gimme 10MP less and a better/bigger sensor KTHXBAI

you guys dont understand how it works. right now with the t2i, 7d, etc, you get your 1920x1080 (or 120x720) picture by using the entire sensor, and just dropping pixels. the t3i zoom allows you to crop to a 1920x1080 (or 120x720) square in the center of your sensor, this increasing your crop factor by a ton and giving you longer range lenses. this is not something you could just do in post.

but to whoever said that this has a "faster sensor", what on earth does that even mean? and no it doesnt, its the same 1.6 crop cmos in canons other hddslr's.

if you dont see yourself using the crop feature at all, honestly you are better off spending less and getting the t2i. a swivel screen is not worth 200 bucks, and magic lantern makes the t2i a better camera for video than the 7d or 60d.
