Canon rebel or nikon d40

dude if your mom has nikon lenses then the choice is obvious (at least for me it would be). Lenses can get mad expansive, so save yourself some money and get a Nikon. But I'd suggest something better than a D40. Maybe at least a D40x or D60
 
Id 3rd that..im a canon guy..but since your mom or friends already have lenses to share...then go with nikon..but yes upgrade a but...spend the extra buck since u got ur moms glass to mooch off of...

thats how i went canon..all my friends had glass for canon at all different zooms and shit...so we all share...

 
^^ get on some photogrpahy forums dude...google shit...tonos of info on great lenses....learn about them...we cant all teach u...and u will benefit from doing research on the net...
 
for skiing?

you will want at least 5 frames a second for a good sequence.

If you don't want to blow the bank that means canon which means

20D, 30D, or 40D. the 20 and 30 can be found used for pretty cheap.

Rebel Xt and Xti are for rich soccer moms.

If you want to go nikon you will have to go for the D200 to get 5 frames a second

if don't think you will be shooting alot of sequences you can get the D80 or D60 which can do 3 frames a second which will get you a rail sequence where the skier is not moving to fast.

As for which one is better right now canon or nikon, it just depends on the year. This year the Nikon D3 is the hottest shit last year canon was better, It changes. just buy one and stick to it.
 
I always tell people for camera selection, which ever one feels most comfortable in your hand to you. I've shot most cams out there and I'm a nikon guy. If you are just looking for stop action then you really don't need a 5 frame cam, especially if you are a beginner. Cameras that are 5 frames or more tend to be more of a pro camera anyway. Once you get use to manipulating the aperature and speeds (also use to the iso speeds for different lighting, pushing and pulling) then I would say, if you want to upgrade, go towards a bigger cam. As for editing, you don't want to do too much cause then the shot starts to look fake. If you've got it you've got it, if you don't then you don't that's all there is to it.

I've used the XTi a million times for volleyball, tennis and football games. I was just wondering what I should get that would be just enough for standing on jumps and taking photos and of course general camera use. But a nice camera, not a shitty one.
 
Wow, I can't believe that you forgot me. So wrong.

If you are use to using canon then I would say stick with it. The XTi is a good cam, the next step up from that (just a hair better) is the XSi. If you want a change and go with a different make then I would suggest either the Nikon D80 or D60. All 4 of those cams are great and they'll do what you are looking for. I don't recommend shitty cams to anyone

Well, I'm used to using the XTi, but it does get kind of annoying since it's more of an "automatic" camera. What are some of the main differences between the 20D and the XTi or XSi?
 
Well I can tell you that between the XTi and XSi that the XSi is newer and better, therefore more money. Its a 12.2 meg w/ a 3" screen, versus the XTi that is 10.1 meg w/ a 2.5" screen. Those are the biggest differences. The XSi shoots 3.5 frames per sec at 53 full-res images in a burst before it has to recycle. The XTi shoots 3 frames per sec at 27 images in a burst. Both have 9 focal points. There are other different things but they are fairly close. The XSi is the better of the 2 but its also more expensive.

As for the 20D, I haven't shot that cam since it came out like 4 years ago. I can tell you that its lower res, like 8 meg (I think). When I shot it I came out with alot of good images. Those, if you can find them, you should be able to get a really good deal on. If you go to a shop like B&H then they might have them as used equip. Canon stopped making them a while back cause Photography advances to fast, so the shops aren't gonna have a new one. If you find one then more power to ya :)
