Canon or nikon

right now im thinking about the nikon d40x or the

canon digital rebel xti

if any one has used any of these 2 cameras could you please help me decide

im looking for a good all around dslr that will last me for a long time(like until im done with collage)

and i know that both of these cameras have plenty of lenses to add later to

i'm somewhat in your area, but i tohught the d80 and xti were similar, the d40 closer to xt? not sure

my friend has the canon digital rebel xti and its pretty sick...ive used it a few times and its a good camera

the nikon is marketed as  a lower end cam. In reality though it's not very far below the level of the canon at all. The lense you get with either will be shitty. buy a good lense and it will cost  alot less than the canon, if I remember prices correctly.  If you are looking for some good glass that will serve you well in many situations, I would look at the nikon Nikkor DX 18-135 lense. It produces some really good images, and it's pretty cheap considering
