so im going to buy one of these cameras this summer and i was wondering if it would be worth it to spend the extra money on the hv40. i searched around and didnt find anything so i come to NS!

if you couldn't find what the difference was you don't need to spend the money...

The i believe the hv40 shoots in native 24p, where the hv30 shoots in a like "virtual"ish version of 24p where it converts as it shoots. i think. basically.

You don't need it unless you're a broke aspiring indie film maker. The HV30 is sick, get it.

Doesn't the HV40 have a tape drive as well? Because if so, it can't shoot native 24p. As long as you're recording to DV, you're going to have to perform some form of pulldown conversion/de-interlace in post.

And yes, DV sucks major balls.

i dont understand what is up with you and calling people tards and telling them off. people have different opinions on what they like with their cameras. just because you have DV dosent mean everyone else has to also. and if you hate it so much why the hell would you have a camera that shoots with it. go sit in the corner for that

Because DV is the best you can get in a camera that doesn't cost $5,000+. It isn't a matter of preference. You're never going to meet somebody who likes DV over p2 cards (or something similar) because the simple truth is that DV absolutely blows.

I love my DVX to death, but if I could change one thing, I would can the tape drive.

I actually think the HV40 is definitely worth the money if you plan on shooting in 24p mode. Having to go through the interpolation process in post is a pain.

what about the hf s100? it looks pretty sick for only a 100 bucks more and it records straight to a SDHC card.. anyone know anything about this?

You people with thousands of dollars to spend on cameras need to stop ripping on DV. I use an HV20, and thus far have never had a problem with tapes. Buying cameras with flash memory clearly isn't financially feasible for this kid, so why not actually help him out a little and recommend cameras that he can afford, instead of shitting on the only format he can afford.

So yeah, I'd definitely recommend anything from the Canon HV series, the HV20 is a really good camera so I would assume that the HV30 and HV40 are just a step up from that. I don't know much about the differences between those two, but I'm sure you could find a side-by-side comparison somewhere.

Yeah sorry, I was under the impression that the HV40 was the highest you wanted to go.

But it's your decision, you can spend the extra money on something you probably don't need.
