Canon 7D worth

So Ive been thinking about upgrading cameras. I bought my nikon d3100 a little over a year ago because it was a beginner dslr. I kinda feel as if I have done alot of which the camera has to offer in both filming and photography. This upcoming year im trying to start a digital photography class at my school, we only have regular film photography, and so I want to upgrade my camera. Is it worth selling my d3100 and buying a 7D body off ebay and then getting some good glass or should I think about something else? Really what im asking is the 7D a good enough camera for skiing fiming as well as regular photography for me to sell all my gear?

thanks

It sounds like the 7D is right up your alley. Its a great canera for photography. There are a few better options for video, but its still a great choice. Look into the 60D vs 7D. The 60D may suit you better. It has an articulating screen, magic lantern, and its a bit cheaper. Video will be about the same. The 60D might have better low light capabilities compared to the 7D. Not really sure what the differences are for photo though. 7D probably has faster frane rates, more af points, etc.

IT really depends. What are you shooting? follow cams? stills? how much percentage video/photo? What lenses do you have? How much would you be willing to spend on glass for canon?

I'd recommend the T2i or T4i instead of the 7d. They are essentially the same if you shoot mostly video. For stills, the D3100 is fine. What is the reason you feel you need a 7d/other camera than the current D3100? How is it limiting you.

one of the huge things for the d3100 is the fact that it doesnt have 60 fps which is limiting for footage. Im trying to get into more stills but i would probably do a 40/60 stills to film. especially with the film, something that i want in the future is an external mic and the d3100 isnt compatible with any mic's besides the internal one which never works well filming wise. do you think the 7D wouldnt be a reasonable upgrade stills wise over the d3100? by reasonable i mean not worth it? thanks for the responses +K

thats kinda how i felt when i was looking at a dslr shooting more video but getting more into stills as well. i ended up getting the 60d over the 7d and couldn't be happier. the articulating screen is sooooo much more helpful than you would think and the pictures are comparable. the burst rate is slightly less but its still relatively high compared to some others. and if you ever want to use like a mountable shotgun mic, the 60d is the best possible way to go! you can install magic lantern and make the camera do sooo many more awesome things with audio levels and control, helpful functions commonly found on video cameras, and many options and camera functions like intervalometer and such. i would recommend the 60D over the 7D to anyone in your situation any day. im super happy with it.

if you are wondering about the buttons being too 'squishy' or all the other bs people say is bad about them, its really not bad at all. you get used to it after about 10 minutes of playing with it. the ergonomics are basically identical so the 60d doesn't feel cheap at all. you can still run hdmi monitors off of the 60d too if you ever wanted to spice up your rig a bit. Definitely the 60D thats my vote 100%.

hope that helps

You should look at what exactly is limiting you right now. Is it the camera body or the lenses? Or do you just want to upgrade?

If you need 60p it might be worth it to wait for Nikon to release their D5100/D7000/D300 successors, which will happen in the next months. If you just want a better camera, also look into the D90 and D7000. Canon is a bit ahead in the video game, but the 7D is getting old with old sensor technology. Recent Nikons will get you way better dynamic range and noise performance. For photography that is a big deal.

As for lenses seriously save up and get a second hand Nikon 17-55 f/2.8. This lens is astounding and there is no equivalent for Canon unless you go full frame. The Canon 17-55 is not comparable. Other than that I'm a big fan of the Tokina 11-16 and 50-135 in terms of wide angle and tele. Really great performance for a relatively small price.

Get a used T2i body for under $500 and then buy a 17-50 2.8 used for $400 and then get some vintage glass like a nikon 50mm 1.4 vintage. That goes for under $100. T2i is a great body and just as good sensor as the 7D.

Also look at glidecams or flycams and tripods. I would recommend one but eheath would come on and get pissed for no reason at me. So buy a good tripod that i dont recommend.
