Canon 55-250 vs. Tamron 18-200

I own a Canon 55-250 and I was able to acquire the Tamron 18-200 from my school but I can't decide what will produce better quality video. Obviously they have different elements (Tamron can shoot wider, Canon can shoot further) but which lens would you recommend using for image quality?

Im guessing your canon is the 55-250 kit lens. If it is i would go with the tamrom simply because it is not a kit lens and will get that better picture

A lot of the time when you get a lens like an 18-200 there is a lot of distortion at the wider side (Less than 35mm) because it is such a long focal length. I completely disagree with the above comment. The picture doesn't matter what lens you have. It is all about the person behind the lens.

i agree with this. i meant that the Tamron would most likely have better image quality than the Canon, which is what he was wondering.

I'd say take it. If you end up not liking it, you can always sell it for about the same and if not more. Lens hold their value pretty well.

Yeah of course. I mean what it really comes down to is what your future aspirations are. If you are looking to get into video more seriously, you will find that an all-in-one lens will not get it done, compared to having a wide angle, a medium and a telephoto lens for example.

Just to clear up some confusion, I have both lenses. I own the 55-250 and I borrowed the Tamron from my school. Just wondering which to bring on the mountain for the purpose of overall better image quality.

They're both rather terrible lenses, but I would go with the 55-250 if they're your only options because it doesn't try to do much. The Tamron was made to be a "I know nothing about quality and only have enough cash for one lens" product, while the Canon is a beginner telephoto. They'll both be bad, but the Canon will likely be better for your purposes.

They both suck.

That being said, the tamron will be better "all around" and will probably work just fine for you.
