Canon 1.4 50mm usm

It's nice to have a straight 50 in the kit, but if you're shooting ski for real you'll need a 70-200 2.8 and a superwide. You won't wind up using the 50 for much other than standard protraiture.

What body are you running?
 
i have a 1.8 50mm, but its only an EF lens, has no USM. I like it, its just a little too long to shoot stuff close up though.
 
i have an canon elan 7 (thats film) and a 28 135 IS lens.

i want the 50 for its lowlight and clarity options. i've read up on it and its pretty much rated at canon's l series, which is pretty incredible considering the fact that it costs 300 and L lenses can run in the thousands (depending on the model).

i have no intention of using it for skiing. its mainly for travel, art and portraiture.
 
I have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens and I love it, so I'm sure the 50mm f/1.4 is a great lens (considering it has a distance scale and isn't made of plastic like the 1.8). It is the only lens I use due to financial constraints and it works great for skiing, you don't "need" any certain lenses you just have to be creative with how you shoot them.

If you are ever able to check out photos in people's profiles again, any images that are taken by me on this site are using the 50mm. I'd definately suggest buying it, you won't regret it, especially because it's relatively cheap and super fast.

What other lenses do you shoot with?
 
I hate that lens. The only good thing about it is it's fast. The focus is shaking and the lens aberration (on a digital body at least) is terrible.

It's cheap, so it may be worth it if you need the speed, but don't expect miracles from it.

That's just the opionion of a lonely photographer with a stuborn rule of not shooting with anything but L glass. Sorry, I'm grumpy... ha!
 
get it man. its totaly worth the money i am looking at getting that after i get a new camera(or 2)
 
^^yeah i wish i could afford a series of l's, but i can't. however, i hear from everybody that has it that it basically should be called an L lense, that the quality is essentially the same.

and yeah i bought it, ordered it online with a new filter and hood for a total of 348

Not really necessary to have such a fast lens for taking pics on snow as you're gonna have to close up a couple stops due to the light coming off of the snow.

I'd go with a 35mm lens, much more useful than the 50mm lens. Stick with fixed focal length lenses if you can, the optics are much better than the zoom lenses.
 
I've seen pictures of that lens. That's outrageously fast.

I've got the 50 1.8 II. $70ish, and it's got some of the best image quality around. The lens is a champ.
