So my bro wants to get a camera and he has two options. He's taking pictures of pretty much every environement except for skiing. He just wants to know what would be his best bet.

okay, I hate to be a dick but seriously...just search this

you will get many opinions or you can join the photography cult. or even pm somebody

and in actuality what it really comes down to is a personal preference
 
nikon by far but dont get the d40x get the d50 you can use all of nikons lenses with the d50 and correct me if im wrong i think with the d40x you cant
 
true, because some are too fat to fit in there where under the flash. it's dumb. 

IMO nikons are made much better.
 
not knocking the d40x just pointion out some flaws in the design if you want a nikon and your a beginner to SLR's the d40x is the way to go if you want a few more options lens wise go with the d50 or something
 
If you look you will notice the Nikon AF lenses are VERY expensive, and very limited in sizes. They make very good quality cameras and lenses, but so does canon with a MUCH larger amount of lenses for better prices. Everything else is a matter of opinion.
 
yeah i have my d40x but i'm kinda disappointed with the choices in lens. but for the price and just for fun shooting. it's awesome.
