Yea so what are some nice canadian universities near ski hills (like an hour or less away). im in grade 12 and i need to figure this shit out

Ottawa U and Carleton U in Ottawa.

Within an hour of Ottwa there's:

Camp Fortune

Edelweiss Valley

Mont Cascades

Vorlage

Mont Ste Marie

Calibogie Peaks

Mount Pakenham

2hrs +

Mont Tremblant

Mont St Sauveur

Avila

Mont Blanc

Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (Memorial university) in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. 10 minute drive to Marble mountain. tuition is mad cheap, season passes are $170 Canadian for students. There is also mad BC (for the east coast) within an hour's drive in each direction. I love it here. PM me for more info. Only thing is, its a small campus so programs are kind of limited...mostly humanities, FIne Arts and ENvironmental science and studies are the main focus at the college. Plus tehres a ton of urban spots in Corner Brook and right on campus, and people are generally pretty chill about others jibbing them.

I'm looking at that kinda stuff right now too.

UBC is 1.5hrs from whistler, and $400 seasons passes.

There's also a UBC satellite campus in Kelowona, which is minutes drive from Big White (2,500 vertical).

So yeah, I'm definitely thinking of going to one of them for engineering or design or a combo of the two.

UBC. Nothing else comes close. UBC Okanagan wouldn't be too bad but isn't anywhere near the same quality of school and Whistler > Interior mountains (which are still pretty rad).

Depends on what you want in a school. I've went to SFU and am now going to UBC.

SFU was closer to the local hills and a little closer to Whistler. So I guess if getting an education while getting lots of skiing in is your goal then its a good option.

But personally I find UBC much more enjoyable as a school and am willing to drive a little further to skiing.

Pretty sure there's a Capilano College (which is now officially a university) in Squamish, about half an hour from whistler.

That's because she's a woman driver

Just kidding. I just started looking into it yesterday so thanks for the info!

thanks alot for the advice everyone. I was originally thinking of UBC in the okanagan but im not sure if it has many course options. I would like to consider UBC in vancouver a little bit more now that i know theres grouse, cypress, and seymour fairly close. Are those quality hills anyways? Nice parks and such? the 1 1/2 hour drive to whistler might get tiresome somedays.

Cypress has the only pipe out of the three, but the park hasn't been the best the past couple years.

Grouse is really close and cheap seasons passes, low elevation and some fun stuff if you can find it. Mediocre park last couple years.

Seymour has ancient lifts and stuff, but the park is probably the best out of the three. Tiny hill.

They all get more snow on average than Whistler, or they did this past season anyways.

Yah a bunch of new universities popped up like mad last year. Myself I'd rather get my degree from one of the older schools, but hey a degree is a degree.

Here are some other school closeish to decent skiing, but personally I'd say a degree might be better from the more well known schools.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University- Richmond I think, so still can ski all Vancouver area hills

Quest University- Squamish super close to Whistler but its a private school so you'll pay mad tuition

Thompson Rivers Univeristy- Kamloops, maybe like half an hour from sun peaks and fairly close to silverstar.

University Of Calgary- Calgary 30-45 mins to Sunshine and Lake Louis?

ubc okanagan?

i live in vernon and ubco is about a half hour away and from my house its a half our drive to silverstar so you'd be lookin at about an hour to Silverstar from there.

what are you tinking of taking? I think UBCO has most required courses for all degrees, just a litle less flexible for when they offer them.

The local hills are decent in Van. Really depends on what you're used to, its no Whistler but they're alright.

Cypress- Biggest of all local mountains, total rip off and full of people. But its got a super pipe.

Grouse- Easy to get to by public transit. Ok park, haven't been in last couple of years, but I've heard they had fairly nice jumps last year.

Seymour- Cheapest, super laid back (run by like highschoolers and 20 year olds), has had a good park but last year was really only good for street style rails. The only hill where you can do any backcountry cause its in provincial park. Personally my fav of the local hills.

UBC ftw man, on top of whistler and cheaper passes, depending on where you live you've got 3 more mountains within half an hour drive, and they're all pretty decent. Grouse even has $200 season passes and its not a bad deal considering they have an okay park now. Seymour's basically free, and Cypress is the bomb for pow days if you can't make it out to whistler. Just squeezing in some night skiing after classes maybe?

And mt. Bakers not too far either, for those epic dumps once or twice a year. And of course, for weekend trips you've got Silverstar, Sunpeaks, Big White, Red mountain, Revelstoke, etc. etc.

On top of that, you've got great night life in Vancouver and Whistler, world class restaraunts, sick mountain biking in the summer, skimboarding at spanish banks, awsome beaches, great pools, and tons of golf courses. If shopping's your thing, you've got like 10 huge malls to choose from, and we've got 2 professional hockey franchises, the Giants and the Canucks. I heard UBC's not too shabby at sports either, soccer, hockey, basketball, you name it.
So ya, if you like to do more than study, I'm pretty sure UBC's your best bet?

Oh ya and I'm in no way associated with UBC or the city of Vancouver, or Tourism Vancouver/BC. Just getting that out there.

Arthur Griffiths is running for the provincial legislature in Vancouver-West End, not mayor. And he isn't that rich, his dad however, was.

haha I just went and listed everything that I though was good about Vancouver
I don't even go to university yet or should even be thinking about it

if you actually want to ski, and go to a good school your only choice is in alberta or bc, u of c in calgary is a good school, and cop is only 10 mins away from campus, also sunshine, norquay, louise and a bunch of other hills are only an hour or so away, and fernie, castle and kicking horse are within 3 hours,

bc also has some good schools, any place in van will be good cause they are close to whistler and a bunch of good little hills near van, ubc oknagan in kelowna is another good one with silverstar and big white within an hour drive, and revelstoke just under 2 hours away

Hey, don't forget about UVic now...

Only a mere two and half hours to mt. washington and you would get to hang out with me.. Plus other super cool nsers.

holy shit, fuck that!

^that's not that ridiculous. for a non-canadian citizen to go to UBC, it's 20k a year for tuition. so quest is only a few thousand more.

haha see i read that and im like shit that's cheaper then the college i went to! i forgot that Canadians pay like nothing to go to school! my tuition was 28,500 a year and room and board was between 9,000-11,000.....not to mention everything else......

but it also looks like they have alot of scholarships and grants and stuff.

I paid $2500 this semester, and I'll probably end up paying $1,500 next semester.

Maybe $1000 for the years books.

I live with family so I don't pay for res, but you're looking at maybe around $4,500 for dorms plus meal plan.

im gonna go ahead and throw in a good word for mcgill. i chose it over UBC cuz I think it's a better school with a higher quality of student life... and it's in montreal. Jay peak (great EC pow and trees) 1.5-2 hrs away, Avila and Bromont (good parks) 45 mins away.
