Canadian Election Thread

So I've always been interested in politics and want to know where the skiing community stands on Canadian politics. Who do you want to win this damned election? For me (although I know they'll never be in a position of power) the Green Party is where it's at. So spill any thoughts you have on this.

huh.. I guess nobody gives a shit.

wow I've lost faith in newschoolers if what shoes look cool or what drugs people have tried is more important than where our country is headed.

guess I can't expect much from a bunch of pre-pubescent 8th graders

I think the green party would be good for canada because we need to do more against enviormental issues. But realistically i think the conservatives will win but still hold a minority gov and nothing will really change. Actually they may get a few less seats beacuse people ,maybe dont want to vote

ya id put my money on a minority conservative again. as much as i love the green party, i can hardly see them getting enough votes.

the thing i love about Canadian elections is that the whole ads and debates and media coverage and whatnot dont start until about 2 or 3 months before the elections in America the coverage and all this stuff starts like 8 months before elections

i want the liberals in i think, but on the other hand i do like the tax cuts. like said above, no one cares about canadian elections because our leader holds no international power and couldnt do anything anyays, whereas the president of the united states is almost like one of the world leaders.

From, "Why the American Election is way sexier than the Canadian one":

The US President: Presides over a button that, if pushed, could rain nuclear destruction over the entire globe.

The Canadian PM: Presides over a button that, if pushed, lets his wife know that he's locked himself out of the house again.

My predictions:

Stronger Tory minority (mainly due to gains in quebec)
Liberals loose even more seats, Dion is finished as leader
Elizabeth May will almost win her own riding, but the greens still won't win a seat (although will have a much larger chunk of the vote overall)

All you fucking enviro-hippies have got to realize that when the economy is the shits, you don't want to raise taxes to make people have even less money. Part of the "Green Shift" (litigation pending against the Liberals btw) would raise federal diesel taxes to 11 cents (up from the current 4 cents). Do you have any idea how fucking expensive that will make EVERYTHING??? Buses, trucks, trains, all run on diesel. The cost of moving goods around this country would be ridiculous. The Tories on the other hand said today that they would cut the diesel tax in half (from 4 to 2 cents). No, you won't notice it at the pump, but instead, everything else won't be more expensive, at times like these, just keeping this costs in check is a win. This is just one problem with the Green Shift, there are many others.

I am all for environmental protection, but not at the cost of our economy. The contribution Canada makes to the greenhouse gas total across the would is relatively small. China adds the equivalent of one Canada each year. Even iIf we reduced our greenhouse gases by half, our savings would be negated in 6 months by somebody else, and our economy would be in ruins.

Seriously, we have much bigger issues at stake here. The economy, the housing crisis, and health care are far more important than global warming (which actually may benefit Canada).

For the love of god, take a step back, research some of these things, and don't be so quick to drink Al Gore's koolaid.

i'm 16 so i can't vote, but if i could i can tell i wouldn't be voting either conservative or liberal. maybe NDP, maybe somebody else, but not those two. if you have been following canadian politics then i don't think i need to explain, also i'm too lazy to type it all out for you guys.

Two more things, government shouldn't be sexy. It should get the fucking job done. We have enough bullshit celebrity in the world today. Secondly, buying carbon credits doesn't reduce greenhouse gases, all it does is send money to an intergovernmental body that does fuck all and pisses away the money on bureacratic salaries. So that warm fuzzy feeling you get in your tummy when you buy these offsets is as hollow as the space between your ears.

Dion lambastes Harper for running down the surplus, but announces 80 billion dollars worth of new spending in 2 weeks?

Are people actually taking him seriously? Where the fuck is the money going to come from!?!?

Layton is winning this campaign by a mile so far. Really hoping to see the NDP maintain its 30 seats. Dion is failing miserably despite his best efforts... he's just not equipped. I've barely seen Ignatieff, who (I have to think) is ready to jump at the leadership? I'll vote for him if he does. Harper is sitting on his laurels, I haven't heard anything meaningful out of his mouth any louder than that black sweater vest. Nice job cultivating an image, but... who is THAT supposed to appeal to? Whatever, foregone conclusion. Anyone want to make an early prediction?

Conservative: 140

Liberal: 85

Bloc: 50

NDP: 32

Independent: 1

By the way aside from the NDP I haven't really heard any substantive policy arguments out of ANYONE. When are the debates?

ill admit i dont know much about my own countries politics, but i think that harper is gonna win, but i dont know enough to know if thats a good thing or bad thing but from what i know, green party would be good mainly because of climate change issues and on the other hand, harper is promising on lowering taxes i think. i just dont want dion to win especially because taxes will go up

true, what was the voter turnout for the last election in alberta? something like 30%. very sad stuff. i suggest you start studying the politics more so that you can make a informed decision in how this country progresses, i know i would.

i go down a street, and the party that has the least election signs posted wins my vote. i fucking hate those things, they are fucking ugly and cause a lot of garbage.

Not to get into provincial politics now, but the opposition opitons in Alberta are horrible and unnorganized, and given Alberta's current economic state, the provincial Tories haven't given all that much reason to vote for anyone else. This is why voter turnout is low in that province, although I see it increasing the next time around for many reasons, none of which I'll get into here.

As for those uneducated about canadian politics, it doesn't take all that much to learn up. Campaign platforms are easily available on party websites, and many articles are written daily. Though please stay away from the Toronto Star and the CBC. For your left and right wing biases, but stick to Globe (yuck!) and the National Post respectively.

Honestly....im going to vote NDP. Jack Layton is running a great race. He is the ONLY......and i do mean ONLY one of the cadidates to come though northern ontario and talk to the people in our small towns. He is the only one who truly gives a shit about northern ontario.....period. ( i know to most of you this means nothing at all...... but when your town is dying because of the american dollar, exports, and just general bullshit, then you will know.)

He came to my town to meet the people who voted for him ( and i did in the last election). He was cooking hot dogs. Pretty god dogs i might add. I had a chat with him, and just got a great vibe from the guy. He is who i am going to vote for.

ideally i would vote for the liberals, that is if they stuck to their ideology, which the dont. i like how the conservatives dropped the sales tax. the NDP would just raise the tax and give the money to old people. the green party wouldnt know how to run the country. if anything, i would vote for le bloc quebecois, even though i live in BC. they are so badass, and they would probably legalize weed.

im only 16 though so it doesnt matter anyway.

haha nic your a mess

i think one of the main reasons people dont know about Canadian politics is because in general very little ever changes no matter who is in power.

ye ur right james, canada doesnt do shit. i read today that the green party stands firm on their position to legalize marijuana. so actually, i would rather see them in power rather than any of the other parties, because they do jack shit politically anyways. and in this day and age, the environmental crisis is actually really important.

imo the economy is way more important right now, and the green party wants to raise the desle tax which well increase the price of everything.

I'm for the green party, because they seem to be very progressive. I actually am scared that Steven Harper will stay in power, because his whole agenda seems to be centered around making life worse in every way. It looks like all he cares about is the economy, also he either doesn't care about or outright dislikes the maritimes. He has cut support for arts and culture, which is a small amount of savings compared to the amount of funding that agriculture and industry get, it is also a pointless move, because the only votes he will gain from it is the old man, hard core conservatives, whose vote he would have anyway. Cutting funding to the arts and then saying nothing to justify it just shows contempt for the arts, displaying Harper's fear of creative ideas, which are so important for a functional government. Voting for the liberals would just be continuing the cycle of Liberals/Conservatives, even though they are the only two parties that will stay in power. I think it's important to vote for the smaller parties, because if nothing else, it will get them more seats in the House of Commons/Parliament so they will at least have more of a voice and be one step closer to rivalling the two big parties, which are so old and worn out.

I strongly dislike the NDPs. They don't understand that a lack of competition killed communism. I just moved from Alberta to BC and my insurance rates are going to triple because of the piece of monopolized shit that is ICBC. The NDP party created ICBC. I don't like taxes. Did you know that BC's "carbon" tax on gasoline has absolutely nothing to do with Carbon? It goes into general revenue and half of it is sucked up by the bureacrats and the other half goes to paying the indian's welfare checks.

don't forget that he and his wife livied in subsidized housing in toronto at the expense of the taxpayer when in reality they could well afford to live in a regular apartment/house. fuck that guy. he looks like the dude that sells computer program tutorials on late night tv.

and as for nomenstevens excellent summarisation of voter demographics, it is typically said that if you are young and conservative you have no heart and if you are old and liberal you have no brain. i guess i have no heart. oh well.
